I made this for Asexual Awareness Week in November, but it turned out to be a bigger project than I expected. O.O But better late than never!
Asexuals are often a misunderstood sexual orientation, and many feel lost and alone due to the sheer lack of information about it! It was so hard to find ANY scientific sources about it for my research paper last year, and it’s all but invisible in mainstream media. So I hope this sheds some light on the subject!

If what the Voltron creators are saying is right, then they planned on Shiro being gay from the start. Seeing how close Shiro and Matt were during Kerberos, and how Shiro in season 1 saved Matt’s life in the gladiator ring, they have

Proof they mean a lot to each other (gladiator ring, “shiro was a legend in our household”, etc)
Matt existed prior to season 7 which, I love Adam and everything, but he didnt have any roots to the show until like July of this year. Matt, however, has been a pivotal part of the show since Season 1, and its canon that he and Shiro know each other and were close.
2. Romantic coding (Shatt reunion)
This is the little “SheeRowe” at the beginning when Matt first sees him. Its clear he’s surprised by his face, but if you see the scene, he says it in such an affectionate way that its pretty clear he’s feeling more than just surprise.
This might be a little bit of a stretch, and I might have Shatt Goggles, but to be fair my Father, Carl Himself, a known str8 thought they were together when he saw this scene. Not that it means anything, but if a str8, 50 yr old man thinks they’re together then. Its pretty obvious something is going on.
I couldn’t find a photo of this, but the shot reverse shot on Shiro is framed in a way that reminds me of the blatantly romantic framing of The Bedroom scene.

But here, you see Matt when he says “its great to see you again, uh, sir.” Its clear he’s unsure about what to call Shiro- is he an authority figure? A friend? Something else? Its been probably over a year since they last saw each other, and that was when Shiro injured Matt to save his life which is, okay, not that straight.
Matt is probably confused on how to define their relationship , they both have meant so many different things to each other, its hard NOT to,
And here, you see Shiro assuring Matt. To be fair, this IS shiro’s clone, but as we saw in season 3 Clone Shiro had all of Real Shiro’s memories and traits, so it might as well be the real thing.
Here, Shiro notices Matt’s uncertainty, and pulls him into a hug. It’s both a security that they’re still friends and dont have to be all stiff and proffesional, an assurance that nothing has really changed even though they’re over a two years older and worn from fighting in space, and a relief. Shiro, at the very bare minimum, is relieved to see Matt again. Remember, the last time the two saw each other, it was under the threat of death.
and LOOK HOW HAPPY THIS BOY IS. Does that face look Heterosexual to you? I dont THINK so.
This is when the camera pans back to Matt, post hug. And, i dont know about you, but I can’t help but be reminded of Keith’s Soft Smile when he looks at lance.

3. Parallels.
I’ve already included two Klance parallels in here, but Shatt also has a lot in common with ships from other fandoms.
For example, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes from Captain America.

Its not really proven Shiro and Matt knew each other as kids, but they were in the same year at the Garrison if I’m not mistaken, and they probably knew each other at least a little bit if Sam advocated for Shiro as hard as he did in season 7.

And , although there haven’t been many good Shatt interactions that aren’t Above, if their dynamic is what people think it is, they’re even more similar to Stucky than ever.
Bottom line, Shatt would have been a much better option for queer representation , in my opinion, than Adam and Shiro were. This way we have an attachment to both the characters, and they both serve purposes to the story other than to be each other’s love interest. It had a lot of potential, and still Has a lot of potential if we can manage to keep it alive. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
