me when my favourite ships are on screen
Sketching them actually makes me really happy
I don't know how long I've been alone Let's reacquaint and show That something's gotta give now
gladiator turned team scientist matt/shiro AU from radio waves by @atlasarcana. voltron rarepair in 2026 who gives a shatt
I had to explain the plot of Voltron to my mom and it really set in how crazy I sound a little because it was basically “a bunch of people flying robot space lions that actually all form this giant robot guy who fights purple cat aliens in the name of helping elf alien people…and it’s gay because-“
shatting it tonite
being a shatt fan in 2025 is interesting. because my opinion of what the most intriguing parts of the ship are has definitely changed since i first watched the show in 2016. matt is a side character, static, and i think that's something to be leaned into rather than supplemented with additional backstory when it comes to approaching core themes of the ship. there's something so intriguing about looking at the times we see matt in action in canon, separate from his sister's idolized version of him, and see that he's... kind of a coward. sure, he steps up and joins the rebels, he works hard and does what he has to, but matt's major choices are so often marred by hesitation and fear. shiro, on the other hand, is the ambitious pilot, who keeps moving forward, who helps drive voltron to its initial success. when they are in the ring, matt freezes, shiro pushes forward. when they see each other again, matt hesitates, shiro pulls him in. it's the reason i don't ignore the existence of adam when writing about them in their days at the garrison pre-kerberos--despite my deeply mixed feelings on adam as a part of the narrative--it makes sense that matt would never have had the guts to confess to shiro before shiro kept moving, kept achieving better things, and found someone else who he clicked with. every time he was almost there, he would've hesitated, until the chance was lost. what would it take for the two of them to finally be together? would they ever reach that point? would that require shiro to slow down, too? would that be good for either of them, or would both of them be trapped in the people they were to each other before the war? how does this play with shiro's part in the narrative--a character that kept getting added back in against the story's will, whose progress kept being stunted and restarted? idk. i need to write again.
Something about how fast the night changes
Can you tell us about Matt?
Yes, we CAN tell you about Matt!!
First of all, we are changing when he shows up. He shows up in what is considered season 3 of the rewrite, but proportionally to the show it isn't that much different. So its okay.
VERY supportive Matt and Pidge sibling relationship. They are INSUFFERABLE when they start talking about tech. Do not leave these two as the only speakers in a room, PLEASE, they will not shut up.
We are not actually changing his personality that much, he's just getting more screen time. You see. More development. Characters shouldn't just appear for five seconds then go "BYEEEEEE" and disappear. For like 6 seasons
He stays on the Castleship for longer. He becomes the representative for the rebels, and how they and Team Voltron start to communicate.
Colleen gets onto him as well for staying so long in space AFTER being being abducted, even when given the option to come home.
Shalluratt! The ship that takes the longest to develop!
Matt has kinda... always? had a crush on Shiro. Pidge never heard him shut up about Shiro. Matt and Shiro were effectively classmates at the Garrison. Feelings developed naturally for Matt, but Shiro and Adam got together so Matt ended up repressing his feelings so as to not get in the way of their relationship. Friends to lovers!
With Allura, it wasn't love at first sight. She was pretty, and her and Matt got closer over time (you see... normal character interactions). He admired her ability to command a room, getting a group's attention, but peacefully. After seeing all the destruction in the universe and fighting, seeing her diplomatic skills was something Matt loved.
The quiet moments, the downtime, general hanging out had compounded into something real and intimate.
Matt is, low-key, just their boyfailure LMAO.
Matt gets more interaction and development with other characters, not just Pidge, even though those Matt and Pidge interactions are essential.
Matt, Allura, and Shiro are just the paladin's space parents lol.
Matt's age is changing, he is now 23 instead of weird liminal space never addressed in the show.
Matt is disabled from being in the fighting ring and part of the rebellion, his leg is fucked up. He specifically has a transtibial amputation on his right leg. There are also several other random lasting injuries from just general fighting and war. For example, his left shoulder is fucked up as well, making mobility in that arm difficult.
Fun fact: He just knows a bunch of words in random alien languages.
