Social Media 101: 4Chan

Just like any profession, you need to know a little bit of its own history. Since social media as a profession is still very new, not many people know it’s history because it’s happening now. I talk about memes a lot because in today’s world, they’ve become a cornerstone of our C generation culture. What is C generation? C stands for content. Today’s C generation is the first of it’s kind in the sense that there are no age boundaries. It consists of anyone who creates content and distributes it online, such as blogs, statuses, anything online. Anyway, back to Social Media’s roots. I’m definitely biased. I’m not a 4Chan fan, so naturally I think it’s the internet’s asshole. But who am I to judge the porn-ridden forum? Without 4 Chan, we’d have no Anonymous or Reddit. Sports fans wouldn’t have The Mainboard. We’d even be behind the ball on Memes. Like it or not, 4Chan paved the way for our cynical view of life and humor. It’s something we should know about-and shudder when it, which should not be named, is referenced. There’s actually not much to 4Chan. I just think that people who are in charge of driving content and creating strategies should be aware of an important piece of their industry’s story. It’s like in Public Relations. On day one of my very first PR class, I was taught that one of the very first PR pros was actually PT Barnum. Who’d a thunk that he developed the idea to get his acts in the paper? EMS and Paramedics need to know that the very first ambulances also served as hearses because it provided a way to earn more money. Social media is still so young. Aside from learning about the next best thing, we should also take a peek into where we came from, bones and all.

Generation C

I think the coolest thing about Generation C is not the fact that it’s a content-driven community, but that it’s not exclusive to age. Anyone who can create and distribute online content is part of this amazing, new generation. It’s the evolution of human society that’s changing before our eyes. It’s a new learning-curve that’s revving up the marketing, advertising and PR game. People are learning and laughing differently. We’re responding to a new kind of cynical and satirical humor. We enjoy wit that the time before memes and George Takei, Social Media Phenom, could never understand.

Working with REAL Memes

Memes as we know them today were although made popular by the bookmarking site, Reddit, but we’re actually conceived in the pits of 4-Chan. There, in the porn-laced forums, guys everywhere took their “creativity” to Microsoft paint and started creating the witty, and sometimes not so cheeky, images that we all laugh at today. But the proper definition is not just an image that is created with limited graphic abilities. A meme only becomes a meme when it’s gone viral. It’s proper definition states, “an idea, behavior or style that’s spread from person within a culture.” That being said, not any image that’s uploaded to social media is a meme.

So, no, unfortunately that image you just uploaded of your dog asleep with some text over it probably won’t go viral. Therefore, not a meme. You can, however, use already popular memes to your advantage. Let’s say you want to punctuate your latest win or achievement. There are so many memes that have already been created that are at your disposal. Success Kid, Most Interesting Man, Shibe, take your pic. Hop on to meme generator and have at it.

My Client's First Troll

My client finally got his first official troll! I probably should be that excited, but in a way it feels like he's actually getting big on twitter! It was a dumb, little post, but it made me feel like I was doing something right to attract a troll. My client is not "faith-based"' but he is Christian, so every now and then, I have to post something motivational about Christianity. I'm not Christian, but he does have a huge fan base that is Christian... And yadda yadda yadda...audience blah blah... You get the point. Anyway, his troll started questioning God and his values. It felt great to intentionally not feed him. Fast forward: It's been a few days since I've seen that troll, now. I guess he got tired of not getting attention.

THE BIG 5: ALIGNING INTERNATIONAL TEAMS

1. SIMPLIFY

When you’re dealing with cross-cultural teams, it’s important to keep in mind the different cultures involved and how they interpret the tasks at hand. The easiest way to avoid getting lost in translation is to KEEP IT SIMPLE. Clearly set your goals, responsibilities, and priorities of all the key players involved in the development of a project, both numerically and visually, allows everyone working on it to be ALIGNED. Avoid complicating things with fluff and get straight to the point.

In the words of Einstein “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough”

2. CONNECT

Managing a project whose key players are scattered around the world seems like tricky task… But the best way to get around communication barriers such as time differences, multiple languages, and distinct work culture us to use collaboration tools and clearly layout how each one will be used in each phase of the project.

3. STRUCTURE

Now that you have clearly laid out your project’s goals and established the tools you will use to measure progress, it’s time to create some structure. Templates are the best way for everyone to understand what is needed for the completion of a certain element that fits in the larger picture, being it communicational elements on websites, microsites, apps, social platforms, or HTMLs. By keeping the layouts simple, you can create guidelines for all the steps to be completed. This helps everyone stay organized.

4. DEADLINES

This is crucial for any team in order to avoid those last minute panic attacks, the one’s where you realize things are missing and no one is available in the other countries because of a time difference or miscommunication. Deadlines are clear-cut and allow for a six-sigma approach to content development. No one is left waiting on someone else’s part and the whole team is aligned with the set time frames. With the use of the collaboration tools mentioned above, you can communicate and promote interaction between the team members on delivery dates and enable a flow of information so the project comes together in the way it was planned.

5. FLEXIBILITY

This is the most important trait anyone working with international teams should have. Even though you may excel in simplicity, connection, structure, and deadlines, the world is unpredictable and you must be ready to react to whatever is thrown your way. You can have an efficient foundation with the steps mentioned above, but a content strategy succeeds only when extraneous factors are efficiently managed. Be ready for anything and be ready to communicate with everyone on board if there is a change of direction.
