If you messaged me with something happy, your cards have been sent out! Thanks so much for sharing your little stories - they were wonderful to read. We still have a few Valentineâs Day cards left, although theyâll arrive late (after February 14) if you still want one.Â
My other news is to ask for your help: Palomacy (the rescue that saved Miu) found out that theyâre short by over $8000 for 2016 expenses, and they need to raise this money as soon as possible. They pay to save the lives of birds that many shelters would euthanize immediately, and their founder spends a lot of money out-of-pocket and depends on donations to pay for expensive vet care. Of course the holiday cards will be retired, but Iâd love to make a few more all-purpose cards with my favorite Miu photos. If you donate to them here (whatever you can afford) and show me a screenshot or other proof, weâll mail you a card too!
Please consider donating <3
something that has usually worked for me in the Bad Times is just. Giving myself an hour. no i donât want to wake up. but i tell myself. get up. and if in an hour we feel worse, weâll go back to bed. i say to myself: you donât have to like it. you just have to do it. sometimes i get to the end of the hour and go back to bed. but a lot of times after a shower and water and maybe doing some jumping jacks or stretching i feel better. thereâs a lot to do in an hour that makes it a little less oppressive to breathe. picking out good clothes, putting on good music, doing your makeup so tight it forms a blade, texting a friend, making tea, trying a new hairstyle, making an omelette. itâs gotta be up though, nothing in bed, nothing still, nothing just sitting and staring into the void. itâs got to be moving. creating things helps. journalling helps. but not in bed.Â
i think we who are mentally ill kind of got. a double dose of inertia. and sometimes the push it takes to overcome that inertia keeps us in bed. but i have found a lot that just. starting to move. helps. even a little. because if youâre up you might as well make the bed. and you might as well go to one class - you can skip the second if the tired gets worse. and once youâre at that one class, you make it to the second because why not.Â
it doesnât always work. but give yourself an hour. sixty minutes. say: okay. itâs gonna suck and that first push might take all of our effort and we might sit on the floor for an hour and if that happens, fine, weâll go back to bed. but then you tried. you got up and tried. and something about that makes the guilt a little less harsh and makes you feel a little bit more powerful and the next time you wake up and your body wants to sit on the floor, you say: no, thanks, we did that yesterday and my hips still hurt. letâs see if i can shower. and maybe you sit in the shower instead but you did take a shower so it probably counts. thereâs a lot of power in baby steps. i believe in you. and i think you can do a lot with those sixty minutes.
Iâve been told these things so many times, but never so gently. this is the first time Iâve believed these words. thank you so much.

Hi Everyone,Â
Last week I took my pet pigeon Apple to the vet for a checkup. She is in very good health, but my vet is worried about her frequent egg laying. Apple is very attached to me and has chosen me as her mate, and despite my efforts to discourage her (ignoring or rebuffing her flirting, rearranging her cage, not providing nesting materials, etcâŠ) sheâs laid eggs up to twice a month in the ~2 years Iâve had her.Â
Chronic egg-laying is very stressful physically on pigeons, especially as they get older. The risk of malformed eggs or egg-binding (the egg getting stuck in her body) only increases with age. In addition, Apple gets horrible diarrhea the whole time she is on her eggs, and antibiotics arenât a long-term solution. Lastly, she gets extremely hormonal when she wants to lay, and becomes aggressively single-minded on wanting to mate or make a nest for days before she lays. We can tell sheâs wearing herself out needlessly.
Hormone treatment can help her reduce her laying, but itâs expensive. We would need to give her at least a monthâs dose of Lupron by injection (~$170), and if she responds well, an implant that lasts 1.5-2 years (~$170, NOT counting surgical expenses & anesthesia/painkillers). All in all I expect to pay about $500 in the next few months.
I want Apple to live a long healthy life, so I am willing to pay for these. But I am not getting a paycheck right now because of a medical issue which has left me currently unable to work, or even take commissions. Thatâs why Iâm offering a print sale to help ease the financial burden of this big chunk of change I have to put down.Â

#NotMyPresident
The electoral college does not vote until December 19th. We have 40 days.
What does this mean?
Right now, the presidential election results are only a PROJECTION of the election outcome. They are PRELIMINARY RESULTS. A candidate still needs to earn 270 electoral votes to win. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, which means that more than 50% of the voters wanted her for president. The electoral college shouldnât guarantee an override of the publicâs opinionâ and it doesnât have to.
There are 21 states that do NOT restrict which candidate the electors vote for. Out of these 21, Hillary lost the following:
As you can see, these states are worth 166 electoral votes. As it currently stands, Hillary Clinton is projected to receive 232 votes. Trump is projected to win 306. This means that 37 votes need to be taken away from Trump to bring him down to 269. Hillary Clinton needs 38 votes ADDED to win 270. These electoral voters can also abstain, which means that they can refuse to vote for either candidate. If 37 of the voters within these states abstain then no candidate will have reached the required 270. In this case, the vote would be taken to the House.
Trump won Pennsylvania, a state that typically votes blue, by less than 100,000 votes. While it is highly unlikely to get all 20 electoral voters to cross party lines and vote democrat, it also isnât impossible to convince a few of them to be âfaithless electors.â We only need to convince 38 out of the 166. That is 23%. There are SIXTEEN states we need to focus our attention on.
A move like this would be unprecedented. However, as we all saw on November 8th, odds donât guarantee reality. Trump had a less than 20% chance of winning, yet given the circumstances, enough people came together and made it happen. We can make this happen.Â
Ask yourself this: What do we have left to lose? We can stay complacent and accept that this country will be run by a racist, sexist, islamophobic, homophobic, ablest bigot, or we can at least try.Â
How?
SPREAD THE WORD. Trend #NotMyPresident to let people know that we do not accept being led by a man who does not care about our wellbeing. Email your professors, email the dean of your colleges. The last thing a university wants is negative press. Millenials can take a stand, but that doesnât mean we have to be the only ones. Church-led events helped bring a lot of disillusioned voters to the polls. Spread the word in any way possible, whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or even in person. Stage a peaceful protest. Hand out flyers. Let the people around you know that you donât accept this man as your leader when he wonât even accept you as a citizen with your designated rights.
These 166 people need to face the consequences of electing this man.Â
Do this for the people who couldnât vote. Do this for the people who live in the very real fear of being deported. Do this for the people who will have to face the rise in hate crimes. Do this for the people who have a very real possibility of losing their rights. Do this for the people who will no longer be able to afford necessities.Â
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Is this possible?
Yes, I wouldnât have made the post without doing my research. Read the following paragraphs, taken from archives.gov:
Are there restrictions on who the Electors can vote for?
There is no Constitutional provision or Federal law that requires Electors to vote according to the results of the popular vote in their states. Some states, however, require Electors to cast their votes according to the popular vote. (The 16 states listed above do NOT restrict their electors to this rule.) These pledges fall into two categoriesâElectors bound by state law and those bound by pledges to political parties.
The U.S. Supreme Court has held that the Constitution does not require that Electors be completely free to act as they choose and therefore, political parties may extract pledges from electors to vote for the partiesâ nominees. Some state laws provide that so-called âfaithless Electorsâ may be subject to fines or may be disqualified for casting an invalid vote and be replaced by a substitute elector. The Supreme Court has not specifically ruled on the question of whether pledges and penalties for failure to vote as pledged may be enforced under the Constitution. No Elector has ever been prosecuted for failing to vote as pledged.

Can Hillary still receive votes from the electoral college even though sheâs conceded?
Think about it, Mitt Romney lost the 2012 election. All of the electoral voters didnât immediately vote for President Obama the second he conceded. The election still ended up being 332 votes to 206. Not 538 unanimous votes for Barack Obama.
âFor starters, it doesnât matter if a losing candidate concedes, as far as the Electoral College process goes, according to Amy Bunk, director of legal affairs and policy at the Office of the Federal Register, among other experts.â
SOURCE:Â https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2016/10/20/can-losing-presidential-candidate-actually-challenge-election-results/s42xw8h3pcwFcXx7rsS14I/story.html
Conceding does not take a candidateâs name off of the ballot that the electoral voters see. In the past, âfaithless electorsâ have voted for the projected losing candidate, or even voted third party.Â
SOURCE:Â https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faithless_elector#List_of_faithless_electors
Concession really only means acceptance of the PROJECTED outcome. This does not mean that the actual outcome cannot be different from the projected outcome. Please keep this in mind.

Create a code to let your friends or your family know when youâre in trouble. Donât sit alone in the cafeteria. Go to the bathroom between classes with a friend. Itâs better to be late than to be in a situation that may be unsafe. Hold on to those who love you - the TRUE you. Reach out to the people who will help keep you safe. Above everything else, stay safe. Your health and your safety are so important. You are our future. You are a light in the darkness. You are precious.
This is important.

There is not now, nor has there EVER been someone who isnât or who was unlovable. Even the most evil figures in history had someone who loved them, how could it be any less true of you? Your time is precious, not only to yourself but to those who care for you. There wonât always be someone to lean on the moment you need them so itâs up to you to make it until then. That means reaching out, learning to cope (even if for a little while) and remembering what I said: Youâre loved. You can do it, I know you can. Make me proud.
