ONCE LIVED IN FLESH
Once Lived in Flesh confronts traditional beliefs and conservative values toward religion, gender, and sexuality. It peers into the structures that define our perceptions and attitudes of hegemonic practices, examining the destruction of womanhood under the patriarchy, the colonial roots of corporal punishment and how it seeps into domestic spaces, and the alienation of those whose gender and sexuality do not conform to heteronormativity.
Through each work, subversions are created to disrupt the narratives that perpetuate within Filipino culture, in an attempt to criticize and transform the physicalities and behaviors that uphold the conventions of our communities.
Featuring works of Rain Balane, Amara Averion, and Sherry Kagalingan.
Ang Altar ni San Bdoi | Rain Balane
Ang Altar ni San Bdoi is an examination of the sequential nature of authority and the attitudes Filipino families have towards corporal punishment, deconstructing the sublimated relationship between atrocities of colonial history and forms of castigation present in contemporary Filipino culture. The work illustrates the extending shadow of violence and how Catholicism humanizes the hierarchy of pain that is made apparent through the collective trauma of the Filipino family.
