Matt ceases putting his helmet on, leaving it suspended in the air. He’s surprised by Valari’s admission, although he probably shouldn’t be, all things considered. Garrison played up his, his dad’s, and Shiro’s death for a year. And then he spent several years between being held prisoner and being hunted down by the Galra. Now, he has a mission to do that will place him directly into the crossfire if he’s not careful.  Their missions are dangerous. There’s no guarantee you’ll come back alive, and needing to perform a HALO jump on this one only increases the risks.

“You won’t,” he says, turning to Valari and dropping his arms down in front of him, helmet in tow. Matt gives her a reassuring smile as he continues. “I know this seems pretty dangerous and well… it is, but I’ve done this a hundred times now. So I know what to expect and how to avoid it to the best of my ability. I’ll be fine, so don’t worry.”

It hadn’t been even a year yet. Rebuilding and everything, there was not a time to spend with some of her friends. For so long she believed they were all gone. One by one, they disappeared. Her safety, her home. Samuel, Shiro and Matt was the first to disappear. Her heart broke for them all, but none more for than Matt. Katie suffered terribly and so did their mother. The idea that she had to confront someone made her feel sick, but regardless of her own reasons, she had been given her rank for a reason. So he walks with her only to stop (thankfully) after a single step. “The other instructors?” Matt glances at the mountainous stack of paper and then back to Valari, pursing his lips. It isn’t hard to see that she’s being taken advantage of, especially with the ridiculous amount she has to carry. The other instructors should really do their own work or get a teaching assistant to help them. Valari is an instructor herself. She has enough work with her own students without having more being put on her plate. Of course, Matt can’t vocalize that, as it would be criticizing and even accusing his superior officers of negligence. Instead, he decides to wordlessly take a good stack towering over her into his own arms to relieve her of some of the weight and vision impairment. 

“I think a little tardiness would be forgiven considering the circumstances. The faulty room isn’t that far away, anyway. So it’ll be fine! Don’t worry about it!”

Outside of his rough exterior is a soft, but stern man. His coaching philosophy contains emphasis on serves, blocks and mental fortitude. 

While the first two are both are important to him as a coach, Murphy is, more than anything, adamantly and always promoting to each and every one of his team to take care of their mental health. So long as they love volleyball and even beyond that, wherever they go in life, having a strong mental state will help them go far in any life.

Murphy Agnusdei married his wife, Nora Murphy, of 37 years when he was 31, taking his wife’s name instead of her taking his. Part of the Agnusdei Family, he was born and raised to be another military man before he became enamored with volleyball. Though he had a mind to play the game himself, even learning and going on a small team in his school years, he found more joy in coaching, eventually getting his degree in sports and training. He coached for twenty years in Italy before moving to Japan with his wife and daughter, Rina Murphy, at age 47, after being invited and asked to coach for the Japanese Division 2 teams. 

When his daughter was 15, he became more interested in coaching for the younger generation, having witnessed his own daughter’s struggles in her sports team between home and school and personal life. He started to become more and more adamant about making sure everyone was to take mental breaks, even having one day off a week to just rest for everyone to recover. It was when he suddenly got a call all the way from America that his part time coaching in a high school became full time. 

Valari Agnusdei, his granddaughter on his brother’s side, had attempted suicide and had almost died if he did not authorize an emergency surgery for her. By the time he arrived to go and see his granddaughter, she was barely alive and was constantly berated by those she was supposed to rely on. Her arm was covered in multiple scars, and she had several bruisings on her face, all both old and fresh. When pressed about it, he only became how fully toxic her environment was and forced her mother and father to give over custody to him, out of respect that she did not want her parents to go to jail because of her. 

Murphy, since then, has been extremely adamant in making sure that mental fortitude is one of the things that his team would learn. Mistakes will happen, but regardless of it, you can control it by making up with it and growing with it. Good or bad, as long as you keep going, it will always work out. And that goes the same off the court and on the court. It doesn’t matter if you get help from him or someone else, so long as you give your mind a break and taking a break or getting help when you need it.
