I will say, Dick’s relentless reminders to everyone — especially Kory’s father — of how much Kory suffered is top tier.
He cannot allow Kory’s trauma to be minimized or forgotten, when it so often is. Her compassion, kindness, and optimism do not negate that she was a victim of slavery and experimentation. Yet, so many characters act as such. It’s honestly appalling, considering that half of every issue is complaining. But while most are throwing their hands over their foreheads in woe about something or other in their past, there is no acknowledgement of Kory’s. And specifically in this case, where it should be the most relevant topic in the room, the tragedy of discussion, it is still neglected.
Dick doesn’t let this happen. Dick doesn’t let Kory be pushed around and further allowed to suffer in silence, because she is the type to take on that suffering rather than make it the burden of others. Dick is the first to validate and emphasize the depths of this mistreatment.
It’s also, frankly, very ironic coming from him. He is arguably the one other person so eager to diminish or neglect his own trauma. It might be why he’s so intent on not letting it be forgotten in Kory.
"dickkory shippers are just larpers who don't read comics" and then
btw this is a comment under a misogynistic video comparing Kory and Babs and claiming that Barbara suffered for years because of Dick and Kory's relationship
It is so, so funny how much Dick downplayed this in retrospect.
Out of context, it felt like Dick was just making excuses for being a cold asshole to Kory. You know, standard dumb teenage boy inconsiderateness exacerbated by Batman-isms. I operated under this assumption during my first couple of reads because I hadn’t had access to the Batman books. I now have the context.
In context?
Yeah okay okay that’s rough okay that’s fair okay I’d be nervous too okay that’s fair okay uh huh yup yup okay okay-
Link to the actual plot and discussion of the vampire folk for those unaware btw.
So, I know there are plenty of iconic nicknames for Dick — particularly “the Boy Wonder” — during his time as Robin. All of those are great. Very cute. Very wholesome.
However, I think we need to bring back “devil-child with the laughing eyes”.
Is it a mouthful? Yes. Does it convey every single aspect of Dick’s character at that age? Immaculately so. He’s mischievous. He’s dangerous. But he’s silly and gleeful while doing it, and always laughing. Just… hopefully not at you.
(And, if he isn’t silly or gleeful, if he isn’t laughing… run.)
Things every Dick vs Tim Red Robin fallout gets wrong no matter who's side they take
1. They still loved each other
2. Dick went after Tim after Tim stormed out of the cave. He didn't just leave it at that
3. They didn't have 0 contact, Dick called Tim back to Gotham for Blackest Night. They weren't talking because Tim didn't want to talk
4. Alfred gave Damian the Robin costume initially without Dick's knowledge, and his first mission as Robin was saving Tim's life after he got beat up by Jason (again). He apparently left this mess for Dick to clean up, and I don't think anyone ever told Tim that's how Damian ended up with the mantle
5. Dick helped in the process of bringing Bruce back to the current time, Tim presented his evidence when he got home, and Dick checked it out and solved the time puzzle in Bruce's ancestral home. Tim didn't magically pop back with Bruce after doing everything by himself, it was a coordinated effort that involved the Justice League
6. Tim and Damian started to get along. Not during Red Robin, but during Batman: Gates of Gotham
7. They were both grieving, Dick just masked it better
8. Tim didn't feel like he could ask for help because he knew sounded insane (and was feeling/acting insane). He was doing one of those 'i push away everyone i love because i hate myself' things, which he also did to Steph (who he fired as Spoiler under god knows who's authority) and Cassie. Dick wasn't special in this treatment, and he can't force Tim to stay, so he trusted Tim's judgement and let him leave. It is a "Tim's a sad boy" comic, but he's also very much a part of causing his own problems
9. They still loved each other. They never stopped loving each other. They never hated one another. Both in this era asked the other "Do you trust me?" And the other replied "Yes" and did the thing they asked. *shakes everyone who's ever written about this* that's the whole point, it's about miscommunication, and being in a bad place, but having what you need where you started waiting for you the whole time
Dick never threatened Tim with Arkham either
Jesus Christ Dick, you killed him, it’s over. Jesus. “You’ve spent your life building castles of sand”.“You’re a miserable waste… a nothing.”
Have mercy.
Dick was so eloquently brutal in this era. It’s not even near the first or the last time either.
Like DAMN.
I feel like fanon fans fundamentally just do not understand why comic fans have such a complaint about the way fanon fans interact and contribute to the fandom. Even those that are comic readers, but prefer or enjoy fanon, hold the mindset that fanon is more akin to "goofy crackfic and whump", which does have its place in fandom as a staple.
The issue is, there is a clear difference between fandom staples (like crack and whump) and what comic fanon has become.
Comic fanon has become a monolith in comic spaces where thousands of people celebrate and encourage illiteracy, where fanon concepts are lauded as facts, where non-readers speak as authority on comics, where many many fanon concepts are rooted in racism, misogyny, ableism, xenophobia and classism, where any character that is not a Bat or Bat-adjacent is maligned and mischaracterized to be a prop for their nearest Bat (Hal is Bruce's punching bag, Bart is Tim and Kon's baby). Even the Bats are flanderized into tropes.
Everyone who likes comics and other characters has to endure at some point someone who has never bothered to get to actually know these comics being told their comics are stupid or their non-Bat character is only good if tied with a Bat.
It gets exhausting after a while, so fics that might be rightfully crack or whump, depending on the content, are met with suspicion because they feed this aggressive fanon machine.
They contribute to a problem, and it's a problem that thousands of people outright refuse is a problem because they benefit from the problem (they like the content even if it's racist).
So I get told to kill myself for correcting fanon myth held as fact (Clark abandoned Kon, no he didn't), even phrased in the most gentle of ways.
Then I get people telling me that Bart is the r-slur and a sweet innocent baby (he's capable and his friends' age, curses all the time and tried to get his mentor laid).
Then I get told I'm ableist for pointing out that the "silent Cass trope" is racist.
Then I see fanon concepts held as FACTS where the Green Lanterns are terrified of Batman, or Barry Allen can't solve a crossword, or Clark Kent (an investigative journalist) can't solve a mystery and they need Batman to help them.
Any opposition to this is frequently met with accusations of hating fun, or gatekeeping, and fanon fans refuse to acknowledge that they are being at least little bit shitty.
Anyway, fanon content creators are free to create whatever they want, but comic fans that don't want to deal with being told their comics are stupid have every right to call out inappropriate behavior. At some point you have to admit maybe there is a problem, and you're contributing to it.
We cannot ignore it, we cannot filter it out, it is relentless.
🤦🏽♀️
They are dragging Selena and Diana into this shit too. How many ppl in the DC universe needs to give this couple a thumbs up?
Do they need the celestial beings to be like “the bat and the bird forever one” 🫠
Not even Lois and Clark or Selena and Bruce get this many “I approve” shit 🙄

Going off from what anon is saying, one thing that has always irritated me and I've found tremendously unfair about fanon is that Dick and Tim's firing from Robin is usually painted fairly similarly in fanon/canon? Like Bruce fired and kicked Dick out in his teens from Robin in perhaps a well-meaning way and replaced Dick with another kid, in the same Dick does. But ofc in Tim's case, this is a huge, terrible offense that needs to be rectified and held against Dick forever and Dick is 100% in the wrong. In Dick's case, however, usually fanon paints it as something he just needs to get over and accept and that truly, it's Jason and Bruce's feelings that matter, not Dick, who is being sooooo petty and mean to adorable little Jason, who ofc Dick just needs to accept is adorable and a better Robin than him the true angry Robin, and broken-hearted Bruce, who really is the victim of all his arguments with his teenage son when you think about it. Tim is a victim of this situation and Dick is just a petty asshole. It clearly comes from fandom emphasizing with Tim and Jason way more than they do with Dick but like, it does tick me off. Especially when Bruce doesn't even need to say "hey, chum, sorry for how I handled that!" in a lot of Jaybin & Dick fics lollll
To me, the fundamental problem with the Tim and Dick discourse about Robin is the need to have an antagonist. People need a bad guy in a narrative.
It’s not that Dick didn’t hurt Tim, or even vice versa. Tim felt like his *brother*, one of the most important people in his life, was abandoning him and taking away the last tether he had to the family, This is how Tim felt, and how he felt mattered. You can’t dismiss that. It is also true that Alfred had been the first one to give Damian the suit, Dick had let Damian continue as Robin because he needed a reason for this 10-year old to stay, and Dick hadn’t forgotten about Tim. Dick planned on having Tim operate as the Nightwing to his Batman because he thought too highly of Tim to keep Tim a Robin. He thought Tim was too good to be a sidekick.
But they were two people mourning a horrible, horrible loss in a lifetime filled with loss (seriously, Tim and Dick being in a “how many loved ones have died and left me” competition would be brutal), and both were burdened by immeasurable responsibility. Tim felt like he had to find Bruce. Dick had to preserve the legacy of Batman, run the Justice League and manage WE, protect Gotham, and become the guardian to a child he only somewhat knew with no notice (and I feel like this is downplayed a LOT; how would you, a person in your 20s with no plans to have kids, feel about SUDDENLY BEING GIVEN A CHILD????). Of course the two of them would struggle. Of course they might accidentally hurt each other, either by being too sensitive to actions that weren’t meant to be harmful or too insensitive when they themselves act.
We see their relationship drastically improve pretty quickly from there, too. They never, even at their worst points, hated each other. They were just hurt. Like people tend to be during hard times. Who would have thunk. By Blackest Nights, which really wasn’t that long after (not sure the specific timeline, but couldn’t have been more than a few weeks-months), Tim was already telling Dick that “of course he trusted Dick” in response to a plan Dick had that put both of them at risk during a Black Lantern encounter. They collaborated immensely WHILE still Batman/Red Robin.
Sorry, this is detracting from your point. I guess that word vomit was just meant to establish that neither was evil, or even bad, or even middling. I genuinely perceive both Tim and Dick in their initial “fight”, if you want to call it that, as earnestly good, hurting people who BOTH FUMBLE. Gosh, can you imagine it? Two people that love each other stuck in enough grief and pain to accidentally hurt each other, and whose immense love actually contributes to that pain? But nooooo, someone has to be the villain. Someone has to be put down and yelled at by the narrative for being a very bad boy, how dare you, how could you hurt <insert other person here>.
And I guess this can also be applied to the Jason and Dick mantle exchange debacle. Either it’s “Jason felt so left out and so maligned and SO HURT by Dick being unhappy” or “Dick felt so slighted and so robbed and so mistreated by his mantle being STOLEN FROM HIM”, when canon Dick and Jason, though both starting from angles of insecurity for different reasons, readily (within a single issue) reached a point of support for each other. Dick was giving Jason his original costume and telling Jason to talk to him whenever. They liked each other almost from the get-go.
The main villain in both of these instances is the need for a villain. Y’all love found families until found families go through familial conflict.
I need to stop here or I’m going to keep typing, but I hope I got my point across. I cannot stand the need to villainize parties for being human, or being hurt, or even being mean/callous in the moment, when this is just a MOMENT in a broader context of people who love each other who fumble a bag occasionally. God knows how many interactions I fumble a DAY.
Dick and Tim love each other. They always have and always will. Read Contagion or the Tomasi run. Thank you.
Just saw a post making fun of "Officer Grayson", and people were engaging (agreeing) so hard with it, and I'm just? So confused? "He deserves to be made fun of by his fam", "Fuck you, Officer Grayson.", "DIE!", "Finally a good post" Like wtf is this??? Dick joined the force to fix the system from within! Did they all forget that?! It's so weird that being a good Samaritan is now considered an evil work, and killing has become the good work because "they are criminals, it's only the bad guys being killed", "They deserve to die." I'm so tired of this fandom, a bunch of clowns. Now I remember why I left Tumblr 2 years ago...
The thing is, just because he was a cop doesn't mean he was toeing union lines and condoning police brutality and whatever. In fact, his time at the police department was specifically spent preventing this exact type of behavior.
This includes:
Intervening to prevent police brutality from other officers:
Using his cop connections to more easily access villains by slipping in and out of the Nightwing persona, with the added benefit of not having to butt heads with the law and accidentally getting them freed in the process
Clearing OVER A HUNDRED CORRUPT BPD MEMBERS using officer privileges and his ties to Amy
And on the smaller end of things:
Preventing harassment of a gay cop
Saving a girl who wrote to her Christmas letter to the BPD
Etc etc etc.
And it isn't like Dick doesn't recognize the limitations of being a police officer either. There's a whole subplot in an issue where he can't deal with a domestic dispute as a cop because it's out of his jurisdiction, but it is because he is an officer that he was aware of it and could exact vigilante justice after the fact.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's fine if you don't like him as a cop in the present day or if you don't think the job suits him in general. I liked his time as one, but there are other things you can do with his character.
What bothers me is when Dick is prescribed the typical negative stereotypes associated with being a cop simply because he was one, when in fact his whole arc as a cop was about going against the grain to cripple the corruption from the inside. He at no point adhered to the stereotypical standards of being a cop. Most of his fellow cops kind of hated him. He did his best regardless. And, for many relevant stories of the era, him being a cop gave him access to resources that were integral to his job as Nightwing. It worked.
And I guess you could say that the BPD was still corrupt at the end of the day, but you could also say Gotham is still full of crime after a decade and a half of Batman. Why does he apprehend the criminal?
Because, even if for a second, there's hope of improvement. And that's what matters.
TL;DR: He wasn't some gun-toting power-abusing jackoff or something. He did his best to spite the system in every way and measurably improved the BPD from the inside for it.
Post/Edit: Not a Ship!!!/This isn’t a Ship post!!!😣😩😖😫😞😤
Me: Cowards! Weakness! Your blood line is weak and you shall not survive the coming winter!!
‘The batfamily will make fun of dick for not being able to do housework and chores’ no during prodigal, tim was literally shocked at the fact that dick was doing work around the manor alone and dick would make tim do his share of chores, that guy lived on his own for a long time so ofc he had to learn how to actually live.
Reposting this because apparently y’all need the reminder:
Real comicbook readers with media literacy know that DickBabs' entire history in the comics is soaked in manipulative pedophilia, child grooming, misogyny, slutshaming, racism, xenophobia, cheating and straight up character assassinations.
If you’re actually a Dick fan and a Babs fan, you’d know how much the characters suffer whenever DC forces them together.
The only people who defend DickBabs are those ignorant and egostistical shippers who don’t care about the characters as individuals. They’ll excuse all the harmful toxic and abusive elements in the relationship as long as Dick and Babs are paired because They’re not fans of Dick or Barbara. They’re just fans of the ship.

DickBabs fans really think “read comics” is a gotcha like the comics don’t prove their ship is ooc garbage. Sweetie, I back my anti-Dickbabs argument with comic panels all the time because canon is where they're the most insufferable pieces of shit.
70s DickBabs? Adult Barbara SA'd minor Dick by putting her lips on him. That’s pedophilia and child abuse.
90s DickBabs? Misogyny, deaged Barbara just to make her "pleasing and dateable" to a man, Racism + Xenophobia, slandered Kory and POC women, Tresspassing + Voyeurism, had Barbara stalk Dick with spy cams in his own apartment, Verbal and Physical Abuse, Toxic Girl Boss Oracle bullied Dick multiple times while unprovoked.
Rebirth DickBabs? Trying hard to copy TimSteph's dynamic. No wonder, they later erased TimSteph to make this knockoff look original.
Tom Taylor DickBabs? He said "I’ll fix DickBabs."
Also Tom Taylor: "but what if she's unemployed and he's brainless. And I canonize Fanfiction and Headcanons I secretly enjoyed reading during highschool."
Watters' DickBabs? Same corny goofy ass shit. Barbara spams "Boy Wonder" chanting it like a magic spell to keep the coodependency alive, maybe the writer is not really a huge shipping weirdo like Tom Taylor but hey still obviously an editorial’s puppet.
Every writer, Every Era, Every version is a new flavor of Trash.
DC: "We’ll make them love Dickbabs."
Polls and Popularity gap: "No, we want Dickkory."
Loud minority: "They don’t read comics!"
Comics: Exist. Legally. Pirated. Scans posted 24/7. Panels everywhere.
DickBabs: still flops harder than DickKory.
Loud minority: "You’re all misogynist, ableist, sexist, stupid people who deserve to die!" - just to cope over ink and paper.
Maybe it’s not Dickkory fandom's fault. Maybe your dumpster fire ship is just simply boring, mid, and less popular. And it's time to accept that for you to heal. Cope
whenever a 'The Batfam is so cute and nothing is ever wrong between them!' kind of person posts about Dick being dog-coded i always smile a bit because that's always used in how he's bubbly while ignoring the lost history of how dog-coded characters are often called that because of these characters always returning to their abusers... like do they know? Are they aware? Do they actually mean it in the common way or are they just intentionally dense?
I am so fucking sick of DC fanon making women exclusively mature and Wise and So Much Smarter Than The Dumb Boys god fucking FORBID a woman show a sliver of personality that isn't being Better than the Men. God forbid Diana fucks up and isn't the Wise Woman of the JL or Jessica is irrational or Stephanie is immature or Carol is mean or Selina is impulsive or Cassie childish or Artemis is rude you people beg for more stories about women but clutch your pearls when it's not about them being Girlbosses and God Look at How Dumb The Boys Are Aren’t Women So Much Better For Not Doing That.
