In some ways I feel like this sign symbolizes Garp's tenure with the marines. He's not sticking around the East Blue to enforce this. Maybe it causes some deterrence, but it's not like the Emperor's territory in the New World where they're physically close enough to defend their chosen islands in times of need. But it makes the people feel better, just as his "Hero" moniker makes people feel better.

It makes me wonder if one of the reasons Luffy fights so hard against being called a hero is because he associates it with Garp and what he stands for.

I think Dragon should be messy. I think he should be a shell built up around a tenderhearted teenager that’s still hurt, scared, and angry. I think he should be stuck knowing that he doesn’t have the time, energy, or security to heal. I think he should be putting his life on pause because he puts others’ before his own. I think he should be burying himself in his work to keep from having a mental breakdown. I think he should be feeling like he has to earn the things he needs. I think he should be feeling like he has to justify having the things he wants. I think he should be gentle and jaded at the same time. I think he should be isolating because he thinks it will keep his loved ones safe. I think he should be repressed for all his talk of choice and free will. I think he should be a hypocrite at his own expense.

sabo stresses me out bc i believe this dude is like. 1000% ready to be a martyr to his cause tbh. like i’m really glad that he has luffy now bc i think that’ll anchor him a bit- especially since luffy lost ace, i think sabo sees it as his duty to not die and upset luffy- BUT he still had his “either we succeed or we die” line so he’s clearly still not willing to let himself fail and be captured even if it means dying lol.

i just feel like….idk, i don’t think dragon would actually Tell his subordinates “you should be willing to die for the cause” but i wouldn’t be surprised if there’s sort of an unspoken vibe within the revolutionary army that “you are a part of something bigger than yourself and if dying could help that bigger thing, maybe that’s okay.” i fully believe dragon himself would be more than willing to be a martyr to his cause if necessary- and that’s the culture that sabo was raised into. that he was born into, essentially, since he had no memories of his past when he first joined the revs.

idk where i’m going with this other than that i hc, like a couple of other characters in op (pedro, yasu), sabo is a person who believes there is honor in dying for a cause and would be willing to die for the revolutionaries if he felt it was necessary for them to succeed and goddammit boy you had better not try any shit.

i also think it’s something that sets him apart from his brothers in a major way- while ace and luffy would do anything to protect friends/family/ppl they know personally, i think sabo is the only one of them willing to go that hard for something as complex and abstract as a political ideology. in my mind ace and luffy are more focused on what’s right in front of them, while sabo is more about big pictures and theoretical futures etc.

ALSO ALSO the parallel of ace being willing to die at marineford (at first) bc he believed his life had no value vs sabo being willing to die bc he believes his life DOES has value and therefore his death could have value too….AH

"a pirate cannot leave the crew without their captain's permission, so believe in Luffy." Usopp tells Robin, having already left the crew over his own stubbornness, knowing that Luffy will come through for Robin in a way Usopp thinks Luffy no longer can for himself ("he won't come to save me" he tells Franky)

"I have nakama who aren't that strong, but I still wish for them to be by my side. so I came up with this way to fight, so that I never have to lose anyone. so that no one ever has to leave somewhere far away." Luffy tells Blueno, having already lost Usopp due to reasons unrelated to strength and power, knowing he was too late in learning how to properly be a captain ("it's heavy" he tells Zoro)

but then Luffy yells at Franky that he hadn't forgiven him for what he did to Usopp, not knowing that Usopp is standing right next to him. and Usopp leverages his own life, as himself, using his own face, to motivate Luffy into standing back up against Lucci.

they were best friends and they both knew they hurt the other and they both regretted it so much and it was tearing them apart inside. they want to take it back but they can't they can't.

and Zoro. Zoro is so integral to this whole conflict. watching over them every step of the way. not allowing either of them to brush this under the rug. making sure Luffy shoulders the consequences of his decisions as captain. making sure Usopp takes responsibility for the choice that he made to leave. knowing that they needed to resolve this properly in order for them to truly move on, threatening that if they didn't then they'd lose him. hammering it home to Luffy what he needs to do because he knows Luffy needs to hear it. trusting in Usopp that he'd do the right thing because he know Usopp needs to take the initiative.

and finally, finally, being so happy and relieved when they resolve it the right way. the wide, proud grin and Usopp's name muttered under his breath as Usopp apologizes. the free laughter and telling Luffy he's the idiot as Luffy pulls Usopp back on board. Luffy and Usopp are back together, he hasn't lost either of them, and everything will be alright.
