I love them dearly. I'm so excited to announce I'ma open up a shop soon for my art pieces and vend at cons and such! :D This is one of the prints I'll have in there!
Thank you and have a good day! ☀️
Something I think a lot of people forget about Mihawk is that he’s a very efficient fighter. This seems contradictory given how extra he is with everything else, but Oda explicitly tells us this as far back as Baratie.
That’s not just a look into his character, it’s a clue about his fighting style too, which his subsequent fights support.
I know Marineford is a contentious moment re Mihawk’s strength, since by his own admission he doesn’t plan to hold back against Luffy, but then barely does anything when clashing with him, Croc, Vista, etc.
For the record I hate “fraudhawk” discourse, I think it’s a gross misunderstanding of canon and annoying to boot, but I also don’t think it’s quite true that Mihawk held back at Marineford either. It 100% was NOT close to his full power, of course… but that’s the whole point. Mihawk never starts fights at full or even half strength, even the ones he’s taking seriously enough to forego Kogatana for.
He doesn’t bother to engage in fights that don’t interest him unless forced. He doesn’t use Yoru when Kogatana will do, unless it’s a sign of respect like his first fight with Zoro. He doesn’t use named attacks when simpler moves will get the job done.
He doesn’t use canons to hunt rabbits.
So he’s not holding back at Marineford, but rather approaching his opponents with that same slow build of effort. If you’re fighting Mihawk, YOU have to prove you’re worth HIS time. Even in war.
He tests his opponents with these basic moves to see if expending any more energy is even necessary. It’s just that there was so much shit going on at Marineford, so none of his match ups actually lasted long enough to move past that point.
Remember that Mihawk is a very private person. He plays his cards very close to his chest, and doesn’t give anything - not a word, not a gesture, not even a passing glance - more than he feels obligated to. It’s entirely IC that this would extend to his fighting, too.
one piece has this lovely underlying message about how searching for a happy life IS in direct conflict with oppressive systems and when it comes to blow, you MUST fight for yourself, your dreams, and your loved ones. whimsy and joy are acts of resistance, freedom and peace are things you must be prepared to fight for, and you cannot live without being involved in politics.
and now this is rather hard to glean at times, because oda is a icky fucking misogynist and anime culture is inherently sexist and disgusting.
I’m curious there’s not more meta around comparing Chiffon and Sanji, the two characters in WCI that we see be physically and emotionally abused — in part due to their relationships with the identical sibling(s) — who later went on to find families who love them and would fight for them even when they attempt to sacrifice themselves to save them
Also both of them having a dad out there who did care for them, who wasn’t there when they were abused, but who tried their best to save them when it mattered most
And something something Chiffon having the moment with Nami where she confesses about her families ongoing abuse and how she’s found a home with Bege’s crew being a sort of narrative proxy for Sanji telling the strawhats what he’s been enduring. They did find out about someone’s abuse, but not Sanji’s — but then they do witness Sanji’s talk with Judge later so they do have some strings to draw on there
Another fun thing about Luffy being the perfect pirate king is how he keeps turning people into pirates
Like almost half of his crew were people who straight up hated pirates at some point and he still convinced them
And not just his crew but a whole bunch of the grand fleet weren't pirates before being inspired by Luffy
Not to mention all the non-pirate allies he has
I genuinely can't think of anyone who has inspired more people to become pirates than Luffy, other than Roger himself
I love this scene because there we see Robin not only observing the others but also sharing her own perspective:
It's the first time she opened up to another Straw Hat, and it's fitting it was Zoro since up to that point he was the one most like her ( aka not wearing his heart of a shelve like the rest of straw hats and also not talking much).
Also, she says that she never thought it that way and it might be true for a long time but as a kid she also wanted to explore new lands :
It's just that as the Wolrd Government destroyed her home and hunted her down, she didn't have time to dream anymore, she had to survive. So it's sad but also understandable why she forgotten her dream.
But meeting the straw hats and joining them, reignite her dream in her.
Can you tell that this was supposed to be a quick thing for Cora's birthday exactly two weeks ago? :3
Cuz I sure can't-

Camille Renaud, one of the animators of the one piece episode #1165, posted this beautiful art of east blue straw hats:
thinking about how chopper probably doesn't have the same idea of gender roles as humans. imagine in one scene he's just casually wearing a skirt and someone is like "aren't you a boy??" and he's like ".....yeah??????". he has no idea what those things have to do with each other
actually wait because of this he would also be horrified by misogyny in the medical field. he's talking to a female patient like "you were crumpled on the bathroom floor in pain and he told you it was ANXIETY????!!!???!?!! AND TO STOP BEING DRAMATIC????!!!!!?!?!? oh HELL no i'm getting you a diagnosis. also give me your doctor's info i'm gonna get that son of a bitch fired"
