Gender stereotypes about intelligence start as young as 6, affecting girls’ choices
According to new research from Lin Bian, Andrei Cimpian, and Sarah-Jane Leslie published in Science, by the time they are 6, girls are less likely than boys to believe that members of their same gender “are really, really smart.” These same girls also choose activities based on this stereotype, opting for games meant for students who “try really, really hard” over those for students who “are really, really smart.”
