I've been scared for so long I don't even remember what it feels like not to be. When... when I was in the Upside Down, when I was possessed, when all of that was happening — I thought, this is it. This is the worst thing.

And then... then I came back, and I was still here, and I thought, okay, I survived that. I can survive anything. But this... this is the thing I couldn't survive people knowing. Because I thought if you knew, you'd look at me differently. You'd stop... you'd stop looking at me like I'm just Will. And I couldn't stand that. *Will stuttering slightly, hands shaking more. Joyce reaches out, touches his hand — he pulls away, folds his arms tight across his chest.* I don't want you to see me differently. But the truth is... the... the truth is I am. I am different.

I just... I just pretended like I wasn't because... because I didn't want to be. I wanted to be like everyone else. I wanted to be like my friends and... and I am like you. I'm like you in... in almost every way. We... we like playing D&D late into the night and we... we like biking to Melvald's for malted milkshakes and we... we like getting lost in... in the woods and getting lost in Family Video and arguing about what to rent and... and... and... settling on Holy Grail for the millionth time and... and we like drinking Coke with Pop Rocks *sniffs, crying softly* and... and we like bike races and trading comics and NASA and Steve Martin and Lucky Charms and... literally all the same things. I just... I just... I... *Will's rocking slightly, hands clenching and unclenching*

I tried so hard. I tried to look at girls the way you're supposed to. The way everyone does, but I just... I couldn't. I... I... I like boys. I've liked boys for as long as I've known what liking someone meant. *crying more* And I finally accepted myself but... but then today... today Vecna showed me what would happen if I did this, if I told you guys the truth. *Mike moves off the couch. Crouches in front of him. One hand covers Will's. The other rests on Will's arm gently moving up and down.*

[Mike] Hey. Hey, Will. Breathe with me. *inhales slowly* C'mon. *exhales* In. *inhales* Out. *exhales* *Will's breathing slows.*

[Mike] I don't care who you like, Will. I care that you're okay. And you're gonna be okay. Because I'm not going anywhere. We're not going anywhere. You and me, we've been through everything together. We always go through things together. *Joyce stands, moves behind the couch, rubs Will's back. He doesn't flinch this time.* Vecna's wrong. He doesn't know us. I would never leave you. Not for this, not for anything. We're the same kids who built a radio out of a toaster, remember? That doesn't change. Nothing changes.

[Will] Okay, okay.

[Mike] *pulls Will up by the hand he's holding* Come here. *Hugs him. Rubs his back.* You're so fucking brave. You know that? I'm so proud of you. Telling your mom. Telling me. I care so much about you, Will. So much. You should never doubt that. Never. We're going to be friends forever. The whole group. All of us. Vecna doesn't get to take that. He doesn't get to take anything. *pulls back* Hey. You'll always be our wizard. And my sorcerer.

[Will] *tearful laugh* A real-life, honest-to-God sorcerer.

[Mike] Yeah. That's what you are. *Mike steps back, Joyce steps in*

[Joyce] You'll always be my little boy. I love you however you are. Always.

[Will] I love you too.

The Caretaker stepped forward. "Don't you dare."

I expected that.

I wasn't watching their face.

Faces lie.

Shoulders don't.

The rigid set of their spine. The way their jaw locked. The instinctive shift forward, as though they could physically shield someone who wasn't even in the room.

Good.

I let the silence stretch, tapping a finger idly against my sleeve as if I were genuinely considering my next move. "...Fine."

Their eyes flickered.

"I can compromise." One measured step forward. "The videos stay with me." Another. "The world never learns a thing."

Their breathing slowed.

Hope.

Such a useful thing.

"I'll simply keep them. They stay with me."

Silence.

There it is.

The pause.

Not refusal.

Calculation.

People think decisions are made by weighing good against bad. They're wrong. People weigh comparisons.

So I give them one. I place an impossible weight on one side of the scale—a public scandal, humiliation, headlines, strangers pulling apart every worst moment of someone's life.

Then, ever so generously, I lift it away. Nothing else changes. The other side never moved. I still leave with them.

I always intended to leave with them.

But now...

Now the Caretaker isn't deciding whether I keep them. They're deciding whether they can save their privacy. Whether they can spare them from becoming tomorrow's entertainment.

The question has changed. Which means the answer usually does too.

It's remarkable how grateful people become when you remove suffering that never existed outside your own imagination.

They call it compromise. I call it framing. There was never a choice. Only the illusion of one.

Because if I'd begun with, I'll keep them, they'd spend every breath fighting that.

But if I begin with, I'll keep them, destroy their career, expose their trauma, and let the world consume them...

Then I'll keep them starts to sound almost merciful.

A thumb on the scales.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

And by the time they notice the balance was never fair...

I'm already walking away with exactly what I came for.

[Mike] I was confused. For a long time. I didn't know what I was feeling. But then I started to realise I don't feel this way about Dustin or Lucas. I love them, they're my friends, I'd do anything for them. But I don't— *pause* I know you mean more to me than anyone else ever has. I know that when I think about the future, you're in it. I know that when I'm not with you, something feels wrong. Like a gap. Like I'm falling and I don't know how to stop...

[Will] Mike.

[Mike] You were never allowed to choose. Any of it. Vecna took that from you. The Upside Down took that from you. You've been on survival mode for so long, Will. Just surviving, over and over. And I don't want to be another thing that happens to you. I don't want to be something you just accept because you're used to not having a say. So I'm asking. I'm not pushing. I'm not assuming. I'm just asking. *looks at Will properly* Do you want this? Me? Us? Because if you don't — if this is just me figuring things out too loud — you can say no. I'll go back to best friends and I'll mean it. I won't push.

[Will] I want this.

[Mike] Promise?

[Will] Yeah.

[Mike] *smiles and they hold hands over the table* Will the Wise stays right where he is. And finds his place. And with it, a deep happiness. And acceptance.

[Will] You don’t have to be sorry. And you are not an idiot. You’re not. It’s just… I didn’t even understand it myself for the longest time. I just… I think it needed to happen the way it happened. But what matters is that you’re still here, and you still think we can be friends.

[Mike] Friends? After everything we went through? *short laugh* No, Will. We're Best Friends. We always have been. That never changed. Not for me.

[Will] *smiles* Yeah. Okay. *looks away*

[Mike] Hey. Look at me. *pause* I'm not good at this. You know I'm not. But I need you to know — you are my best friend. You always have been. When you were in the Upside Down, when you were possessed, when everyone else was telling me you were dead or gone or whatever — I didn't believe them. I knew you were out there. And I wasn't going to let some mouth breathers tell me otherwise. That's why I kept fighting. Because I believed in you. Because you're Will Byers, and you don't just disappear.

The Mind Flayer didn't even pretend. The show didn't even pretend. Will's body was just... available. A convenient vessel for horror. No "Are you okay with this?" No "Here's what's happening." No "You can say no." Just taken.

And the worst part? Cookie banners are annoying—something we click past without reading—but Will's violation was presented as cool. Possession scenes get the cinematic score, the dramatic lighting, the "wow, look how scary this is" treatment. The violation is meant to be entertainment.

We get annoyed at pop-ups for coming up again and again, asking the same damn question every time. But at least it asks. We watched a child get taken, used, invaded—and the show never stopped to name what that was.

The pop-up is a nuisance. Will's violation was a fucking plot point.

At least the nuisance knows you're a person.

I like it when they're trying to conceal their emotions to comfort someone else. I like it when their smile is not because they're pleased and it's actually pretty threatening. I like it when they smile because somebody else asked them to. I like it when it becomes an habit. I like it when they just keep smiling because they're supposed to be cheerful and they don't want anybody to see them sad. I like it when they don't even notice they're doing it.
