I actually do not give an actual fuck about (most of) the perceived inaccuracies and adaptive flourishes of Nolan's Odyssey and I think that some of you need to understand that stories can be good even if they are changed to fit a different thematic structure. I simply do not care about perceived mischaracterizations of one of history's oldest blorbos: Idgaf that it didn't include the Nobody detail when Odysseus' connection to the gods is tenuous and his sponsor god/the personification of his guilt wears the face of an innocent murdered as a result of his violations. His defining character traits are established much differently, and in my opinion, serve the medium far better. I think that some of you need to stop the rehash and enjoy a piece of art that claims inspiration, not accuracy.

also the whinging about these kinds of adaptive details is kind of like christians getting upset about jesus christ superstar.

Am I the only one who’s felt a little discouraged by artfight this year?

Obviously it’s a gift giving game, the fun is the giving, but also we can be honest that part of the fun is receiving too. I’ve done 20 attacks, something I’m really proud of! And my goal is to get to 25.

Revenge is never expected, I’ve received 6 back which I am grateful for! But I’ve only organically been attacked once. Last year I felt like I had so much revenge to catch up on (which, I love doing revenge). This year it’s felt so weird.

And I’m grateful for all 7 attacks I’ve received don’t get it twisted. I know there are people out there who have received way less.

It’s just a little… demotivating? Like is it something about my characters? My style? Are people just burnt out this year?

I think the biggest takeaway I’ve gotten from the criticism against the finale is that a lot of people mistake empathy for forgiveness.

They are not the same thing.

Understanding Jax and why he behaves the way he does is important so you can empathize with other people and understand the hurt that people who bully are going through. It does not mean you need to forgive them or that they’re even deserving of forgiveness.

I would maybe be able to understand this argument if TADC didn’t dedicate 30 minutes to Jax, Jax flashbacks, and Jax POVs. Including a whole montage of Jax from a… 9 episode series?

But I agree wholeheartedly! Understanding ≠ forgiving. I wasn’t talking about forgiving the original post. I understand why Jax is the way Jax is. I empathize with Jax that it sounds like their family situation was incredibly abusive itself.

Homelander is my favorite character for gods sake. Doesn’t mean I condone anything he does.

But where the show loses me, and why I say it has this “you actually don’t have to ask your bullies if they’re okay” message (which again - not forgiveness) - is both Ragatha and Pomni explicitly stating “we should’ve asked more”. Pomni explicitly states “I should’ve pried more”. And then Ribbit apologize for “prying” almost ten minutes later and dies.

It’s almost comical.

If Jax wants to grow and heal and change that’s beautiful, but Jax is autonomous. And Jax isolated Ribbit until she killed herself (credit to Gooseworx themself below). And then Kuafmo.

And from Jax’s own perspective - would’ve kept the cycle going.

So yeah - forgive and move on. But also you are not required to ask *your* abusers how they are doing and you are not required to “pry more”.

The last thing I’ll say on this is the confirmation that abstraction = suicide means that Ragatha watched Jax engage in a predatory cycle of getting close to people and then driving them to suicide, rightly assumed Jax was trying to do the same to Pomni (because Ragatha had no context for ANYTHING because Jax WOULDN’T TALK TO HER),

And when she called Jax out on it and said “I know what you’re trying to do!” both Jax and THE SHOW tried to gaslight us into thinking RAGATHA is the crazy, overbearing one

And you still have fans claiming RAGATHA is the problem

1) the show does not confirm that abstraction is suicide. The voice actor for Caine even spoke up about this point after the episode aired and said abstraction is when a person loses all sense of self. Suicide is a choice. Abstraction is not.

2) The show is not gaslighting you. Ragatha WAS right to be concerned. Just because Jax doesn’t want to believe it or think that’s what he’s doing doesn’t mean the show agrees with him.

3) Get away from the arcane critical hashtag and talk to real people for a moment. You seem to be surrounding yourself with negativity and it’s corrupting your ability to analyze media in a constructive way.

2. And yet the show wants us to sympathize with Jax. And yet we have to have 30 minutes dedicated exclusively to Jax and feeling sad for Jax and a montage of Jax. I don’t believe the show wants you to side with Ragath - I don’t believe the show even likes Ragatha that much.

3. You’re making a lot of assumptions about me when you don’t know me or who I am! You’re giving into the exact same thing.

“Talk to real people” you don’t know me!!! You don’t know who I am or what I do or how I spend my free time. Or who I spend my time with!!
