I finished Carrie Soto and I thought because The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a full life story that intertwines with many closeted people, and is a queer love story it hit me hard and the rest of Taylor Jenkins Reid's books wouldn't have such an impact on me as Evelyn Hugo did, especially after Malibu Rising.
Because what do you mean Carrie "The Bitch" Soto learns, over the course of the book, to just calm the fuck down and be happy?
And I as a reader was subjected to the world's worst emotional roller coaster because Carrie closed her heart off (thank God Brandon wasn't mentioned much in this book) and got lost in the ranking and the trophies and forgot to enjoy the game?
And ma'am WDYM she finally FINALLY opens her heart up and she has FOUR PEOPLE IN THE WHOLE WORLD rooting for her and they stay by her side when THE ENTIRE WORLD is just waiting for her to FAIL MISERABLY!!!! (I know Gloria Jones tries to support her during the commentary but cmon)!!!
When she does it, when she opens her heart up, she smiles, she wins, she smiles and then she wins again. She plays, she plays perfectly like she's enjoying it, because she's enjoying it and she wins. And when she does lose, she finally lets go and I was relieved. For her. Not because she can relax, but because she opened her heart up and there was so much love for her, from her father who's always with her even when he's not there (that little black leather book will appear in my dreams I know it), Bowe the 10/10 tantrum throwing pillow fluffing darling and Gwen agent bestfriend extraordinaire. More importantly, SHE REDISCOVERED HER LOVE FOR THE GAME AND THE GAME LOVED HER RIGHT BACK!!!
She is the greatest of all time and she loves being the greatest of all time and hates being anything else but the greatest of all time and I loved her for it. She is okay with losing out to who came after her, she's happy to coach Nicki, be there to Nicki, HELP NICKI KEEP BREAKING THE RECORD THAT SHE SO DESPERATELY WANTED TO HOLD AND I LOVE HER FOR IT!!!!
