The Basement
something about how many times they're looking at each other around corners or through cracks...
irt last reblog even though they were obviously speaking at that point i just find the period of just before -> during -> just after their pseudo-estrangement so interesting....
who wishes to remain nameless
imagine being jay in 2013 and watching this video
the impetus for mattâs relationship with music and songs in his films was him meeting jay. like thatâs obvious score-wise. they were literally connected for the purpose of jay scoring mattâs high school movie project. but specifically looking at song choices. matt, who uses songs and music in his films as a tool to tell the story. itâs not just fancy backdrop, or vibes, or an aesthetic. itâs a part of his vision. he thought about running around jay while lights out by santigold was playing for months before they shot that scene for the webseries. his love for boys donât cry and how ntbts is essentially their âwe love each other so much but will never say it to one anotherâ. they met at this age where matt was justttt getting into filmmaking and here comes this cool piano guy from another school who IS music, who loves movies and games and everything he likes, and can magically create music that will mesh to whatever matt is doing at the drop of a dime. think of how formative that must be. how influential whatever his tastes are. how ben folds five was the first thing jay shared with matt and how army has been their anthem of sorts for decades now. from that moment on itâs not even a question of what music means to matt.
and i really feel on some level that the choices matt makes in his work, all of his work, is him trying to communicate back to jay that he does understand his language, even if partially. even if he cannot score in the way jay does, or see music. that he can feel music. and that jay taught him to do that.
matt: we didnât stay friends throughout the process. (You're not friends right now?) matt: no, we're going back to being friends. every time we make a big project, it's at the cost of the friendship, but that's very normal. jay: we become *gestures with hands* uh whatâs the word⌠matt: enemies. jay: enemies! *aha gesture* matt: enemies. we are at crossed purposes. jay: mmhm (Now youâre coming back together.) jay: the work makes friends come together a lot stronger i thinkâ matt: we haveâthere's an apogee and a perigee... *gestures* jay: âall the way to hell and back I guess. (And now we're coming back from hell?) matt: exactly. jay: itâs the goal of the missionâ matt: no. jay: âright? matt: my main goal when making these films is to have the film be great and jayâs is for him to be great. jay: you know, it's funny that you say that because that is revealing a lot i think the whole team would say about you. matt: yep. jay: okay. (Okay. Good. So, we're still friends.) matt: yeah. *laughter* getting back to it.

i know i tag nearly every post on here with does anyone know what to do/lets end it all/killing myself/etc. but i can't help it it's just how they make me feel
well, multiple spreadsheets, technically. over the last couple of months i've been compiling a database of ntb stuff over on my website. i wanted to have everything in one place, particularly the interviews and q&as.
as described on the page, the heart of the database is the intertextuality section. all other info and disclaimers etc can be found in the link. idk how to advertise this otherwise. uhh it's a nirvanna the band library from one autistic fan to other fans đ§ââď¸ does that help
as i continue to make my way through the recorded epitext i'll add more quotes to the videos/podcasts, that way they will hopefully become more indexable/searchable.
(the site has a global mobile layout, but pages with big tables like the below link are clunky to navigate on small screens. still, everything should work as intended)
