i mean this in all seriousness but the biggest point in favor of the "jay sucks" coalition is that matt seems to constantly be signaling that he has sexual trauma he has no idea how to process but they have obviously never talked about it. it's constantly terrorizing matt but jay is like :/ anyways. about it every single time it comes up OR he pokes fun at it. evil man

re: prev tags, no no, i agree-- i was being facetious, i don't actually think either of them is the Good One, they're both pretty equally horrible to each other and are not emotionally mature people dealing with the very obvious deeply rooted personal issues they both have in a healthy way. i just kind of think it's amusing to point out that jay is a quieter sort of horrible to matt, but no, the thing i find intriguing about them is that they're both dealing with Profound Somethings that are only kind of hinted at. matt's is maybe sexual abuse, jay's is maybe an abusive home life, hard to say definitively how much either of those things impacted why they're Like This now but they're certainly elements at play that arrested their development and made them codependent on each other as a source of stability at a young age. which i can relate to as someone with a similar longterm now-adult friendship that has been in and out of stages of codependency across the 20 years since we met because bonded as very lonely, isolated children with fucked up home lives and a hard time fitting in with our peers. we have grown into adulthood far more than matt and jay have lol, but i do know first hand how much that shapes you and it can be very very difficult to disentangle from. but anyway-- i think it's interesting that they seem to avoid the topic. it's possible it's because jay is like :) matt we can't keep obsessing over this, buddy. but i personally think in canon it's more of a "we don't talk about shit like this, we just know to distract each other when we start getting too heavy. we don't take it seriously when it bubbles up for one of us, we politely look away." i think it comes from a place of discomfort with serious topics and inability to stop running away from big feelings and introspection on both their parts. they help each other NOT have to deal with things, and it goes both ways

i love that it's literally canon that jay's mom didn't encourage him to rest or relax and actively guilted him about it even as a child and even when he wasn't feeling well but now as a grown up he gets to live with Matt and be a sleepy dreamy princess who dozes off during their movie nights and consistently looks like the coziest person in the world tucked into their couch. idk I just think it's sweet :-)
