U(gh)SPS problemos
We've gotten a few emails/ asked around a little bit and it seems like a huge number of Afters that we shipped never made it to their destination. It's been over 3 weeks since our first batch went out and we're really frustrated/ upset, trying to figure out what we can do to fix it. If you're still missing your copy PLEASE send us an email at [email protected] with something in the subject line about missing your copy and also include your address (and paypal order # or that you're a contributor, whichever). We're so sorry and hopefully we'll get this all taken care of very very soon. :(
Also if you did happen to get your copy feel free to give us a shout too, just for consolation....?
Holy crap! Somebody sent me a box of stars!
There is a time of day, in the evening, when the sun lays its head down in the dirt. Some people call this twilight. But I’ve always thought of it as “the magic hour.” When anything can happen, everything is golden, and I am a boy again. That is the place these poems occupy.
Jake Hurley’s photographs stunningly accentuate and are accentuated by the poems in this book. He is able to capture the magic in the ground, opening it for the sky to rest. Rustic, strange, and beautiful. These pictures will leave you warm, I have no doubt.
In this book you will find stars, you will find birds, you will find hearts, you will find a boyhood doing its best to stay present, and I hope, goodness gracious, you find a little magic.
Supernova Factory is a collection of poems by Dalton Day and photographs by Jake Hurley spanning 49 pages and months of hard work. It features full color photographs, a full-bleed cover on glossy 80# paper, and hand-sewn binding on each copy. $10 gets you a copy within the U.S., and a few bucks more for international. Shipping the last week of April (and onward). We can't put into words how proud and excited we are to share this work with you. Magic indeed.
holy shit, who did the cover art? it's stunning!
Clare "perfect babe/art goddess/Best person" Vernon is the magic behind every OTC cover.
After is now up for pre-order! $5 (domestic shipping included) and a bunch of goodies, as always. After features the work of 22 artists and writers, is printed full-color in 36 pages, including a lil mini zine we were lucky enough to have submitted to us. This one's gold, guys, get to it!
HEY, WE'VE GOT SOME EXCITING NEWS!
Throughout our time creating On the Cusp, we've been fortunate to stumble upon some incredible writers whose work continues to make us do lil gasps each time we open up their submission. As we recently mentioned in our Cusper's Column feature with him, Dalton Day is certainly one of those people. Because of that, we are grinning from ear to ear as we officially announce that we're working with him to publish a collection of his poems called Supernova Factory. It's been a thrill so far to imagine all of this work becoming something tangible and we're bursting at the seams to have his words end up in your hands.
We promise there will be more details to follow in the upcoming weeks, but for right now, we'd really love it if you could spread the word and/or like this post if you'd be interested in purchasing a copy so we can get a general idea of how many we might be printing. As always, thanks for being supportive in all our endeavors; we love y'all so dang much for it!!

Cusper's Column No. 5 - Nora Berggren-Jensen
Once upon a time, Nora coined the term "cuspers" as a part of a greeting for her submission that issue. Ever since, we've been entirely enamored, body and soul, and can't help but look forward to whatever she sends us, be it photo, writing, a combination, or just a message saying she's jumping for joy at the latest issue. We love her. You can find her work in just about every issue: Home, Echo, Cycle, Who, and Press.
What inspires you? love, pain, things that aren't good for me, the stars, unfamiliarity, fireflies, traveling, the ocean, people What’s your process like for a piece?
generally something brings about the words- an experience or feeling.
when i'm writing i scribble everything down on some scrap of paper or the palm of my hand and pick out the words i like the best. then when i go to type it up i do some rearranging, some adding, some deleting, sometimes it never makes it to the computer, it just sits in my journal until i come back to it some day. and i like getting feedback for my writing. feedback is how you grow as a writer. when i'm photographing i just take pictures of things i like, moments that feel good. sometimes they turn out shitty and sometimes they turn out lovely and sometimes you get something completely unexpected. either way you get to capture a piece of time, a memory whether it be good or bad. What do you enjoy doing aside from creating stuff? reading, seeing plays, dancing in my underwear, kissing all my best friends, and eating You’ve been given $500 and two weeks off of work, what the heck do you do?
I'M TAKING MY BABY ON A DATE TO THE BEACH And most importantly, did you know you have the same name as Wes’ dog and how do you feel about that?? I feel extremely honored, and i'm sure Wes knows having chosen such a lovely name that "Nora" means light so your dog must be the light of your life.

Cusper's Column No. 4 - Dalton Day
To us, Dalton is the perfect southern gentleman. He's got a gigantic heart and some powerful words. We imagine he has a beautiful accent, too. The answers to his questions are both insightful and charming, so we hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did! You can find his work in Hunt, Press and After.
What inspires you? The South. There is just so much magic and warmth in the ground here. The food is delicious. The accents. The music! The culture of the South has always been a very big part of who I am, and it always finds its way into my work. I love it. My mother and grandmother. They are strong ladies, made out of the very mountains they can move so effortlessly. My girlfriend, Ricky. She keeps me grounded, because she knows that given the chance, I would go burnin' up into the sun just because I wanted to be so close. She makes my heart safe, and she keeps the stars close. My best friend, Ricky. I am blessed to have two marvelous Rickys in my life. He keeps my childhood present. He is brilliant. There are so many moons in this kid, so much howling, and I would not be able to write like I do without him. Squirrel friends for life! My baby cousin, Madison. She is a strange, beautiful, loud bird. There are lanterns inside of her, glowing, that I hope will always remain so. Drag queens. I love drag so very much. The charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent those ladies have is just mind-blowing. I couldn't do it, that's for sure. They inspire me to do the best art I can do. Drag inspires me to remain true of heart, above all else. Birds. Mountains. Space. And other poets and artists, of course! To name a few: Anis Mojgani, Jeremy Radin, Frank Stanford, Jon Ledford, Buddy Wakefield, Jessi Trimnal, Maurice Sendak, Graham Franciose, RuPaul, Lou Murrey, Shaun Tan, Latrice Royale, Jim Driggers, Sam Beam, Mother Aretha Franklin, and the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. What’s your process like for writing a poem? It usually starts with an image. And it slowly grows, line by line, sometimes downward, sometimes outward. I get the poem started, and then I just follow it to wherever it wants to go. I do not believe in forcing a poem to go a certain way. It just won't work out. I try to write a poem a day. That does not mean I write a good poem a day. Poetry is my job, or at least I consider it to be. As such, I should show up to work every day. Inspiration is one thing, but if a writer doesn't meet inspiration at least half-way with honest blood and sweat, it only does a disservice to the poet and the poem. What do you enjoy doing aside from writing? I enjoy eating. Breakfast food, goodness gracious! I enjoy reading, watching RuPaul's Drag Race, and laughing at dumb things. I love listening to records. I love monster hunting with my cousin Madison when I get the chance. Bicycles in the summer. Taking annoying pictures of my two cats, Voldemort and Other Cat. I also enjoy being loud in the car with my best friend Ricky. I also enjoy dancing, but we'll get to that later. Dream ice cream sundae? Chocolate ice cream. Chocolate syrup. Nutella somewhere. White chocolate flecked over. Sprinkled cinnamon and gingerbread. Oh that sounds delicious. Eating it on a porch swing and falling asleep afterwards. On a Sunday afternoon. And most importantly, what is your signature dance move (and song of choice to boogie to)? I'll refer to my dancing style as the Reverse-Super Nova Factory. Limbs flailing. Feet stomping. Heart clapping. And I'll give you two boogie-worthy songs! "Gettin' Over Your Love" by Holy Ghost Tent Revival. And "Glamazon" by RuPaul. Of course.

Cusper's Column No. 3 - Jenna Fletcher
Jenna Fletcher is one of our Ultimate fans and friends of On the Cusp, and we couldn't be happier to bring back the Cusper's Column with a feature on her. If you aren't familiar with her work/ general beauty, the low-down is that she is a bank teller by day and a badass awesome lady all the time, with some tiny pie expertise and serious organization skills thrown in too. Basically we have a hard time talking about her without the topic of marriage coming up. Her writing and a few photos have appeared in Home, Echo, and Hunt, plus she published her own zine called Bright & Tired a little over a year ago.
What inspires you? Distance and the relationship I have to and with it. Live music played in cramped spaces. Public transportation. Vaguely romantic experiences. The way people's hands move. The idea of home as a state of mind. Red front doors. I am fortunate to know a lot of people who are making a lot of really incredible art, so I have to work pretty hard for excuses to not be inspired. What’s your process like for a typical piece of work? I don't really know what the word "typical" means in regard to my work anymore, but I can tell you that the process is generally dictated by the piece and not, instead, vice versa. Sometimes it's a really feverous process, you know, me furiously scribbling something out, trying to get it all down before it escapes me. Things can get a little... manic. And sometimes it's sort of slow and painful, a little bit more like pulling teeth. Pieces usually show up with their own set of rules, I guess. All I can do is stick with that and see where it takes me. It can be frustrating because there isn't any sort of mindset or trigger that I can give myself to start things off, but it means that I'm usually never bored when I'm working on something--it's a surprise. The entire thing is very hot or cold or nothing at all.
What do you enjoy aside from being amazing and writing thingz?
Questions like this really stress me out, okay. Dream sandwich. Go. It'd be some sort of open-faced, cheese and pepperoni sandwich. In some countries they refer to this as pizza. And most importantly, what’s the deepest secret your bun holds? I'd like to share, but even I don't know. The bun hasn't given me that sort of clearance just yet, but maybe when I'm older. It's probably some National Treasure type shit.

What is it about a piece that makes you want to put it in the zine? What are you looking for in submissions?
TBH we just want something that makes us lay on the ground and tell you to fuck off. If we get mad at how good it is, it's guaranteed. That's a lot to live up to, but if you strive for that you should be pretty well set.
