#The smile makes me think of that. he's losing it sure but he knows what he's doing. he's choosing to do it. #He sees niall fall to his knees in complete horror and he can't help but let that up twitch of the mouth slip out as he looks at him bc #he knows the power he has. and he knows niall wants it and loves it bc niall enables and triggers it. #niall gives him the hit. the tacit approval of saying things he knows will Unleash the Beast as it were. #it's INTOXICATING #for both of them! #and I think maybe niall kinda clocks in this moment that ruben CHOOSES this and that realization is Too Much

OMG that actually makes so much sense, I can see it now. (I had originally thought Niall was just in shock and horror because he was watching a past trauma happen again in front of him.) This ramps up the levels of toxicity but also INTOXICATION to soaring new levels, and I love it. It's so much more deliciously fucked up. 🤌

I want to add something that uhhhh I couldn't say bc I ran out of tags >.> but I think another factor in Niall just passing out in complete overwhelm here is not just realizing the intentionality of Ruben's violence, but also his own complicity in that violence. He wanted to protect himself from Ruben finding out he had sex with Mona (which I'm relatively sure Ruben probably knows on some level, saying he was smelling the dressing gown but didn't recognize the scent, which is complete bullshit bc of COURSE he knows how Niall smells). He wanted to protect himself from Ruben's reaction when Alby tried to out him (which, fair). He threw Mona under the bus earlier in the episode to protect himself from Ava's reaction to finding out about the money. He will USE Ruben's volatility as a shield, even as that volatility is what he's trying to protect himself from.

I always focus on the trauma from Ruben's dad but this scene reminds me of how Maura tickled Niall with absolutely zero sense of boundaries, to the point where he literally had to push her off to make her stop. It proves that his mom has absolutely no concept of personal space either. In Ruben's family, boundaries simply do not exist. This lack of boundaries in his family explains why Ruben has zero boundaries with 'his brother'. Right before his SA he reminds Niall they are brothers from another lovers —he leans into that family label because to Ruben being family means having no boundaries anyway. This is also one of the reason why they adopted the 'brother' dynamic in the first place. They can't be lovers but their bond is way too intense to just be friends so 'brother' is the only label left to justify their closeness.
