December 17th - a rescue plan

Some good news, I’ve been talking to two developers now and got them working together, we just had a meeting with the guys behind an existing large (millions of users) site similar to Tumblr, with a vibrant and open-minded community, and more importantly, it has open-minded owners who believe in free speech. They think we can get something done here to rescue the whole community.

I’m not allowed to reveal the site name yet. I can tell you it’s mainstream, open to everyone, open-minded and welcoming. (It’s not WordPress or any site owned by Facebook or Twitter. It’s not Pillowfort, that’s in closed beta. It’s not Ello, that’s mainly for artists. It’s not kinkspace or fetlife, those are too specialist. It’s not jux, that seems to be closed. It’s not Soup, that seems still in development and too small.)

One of the reasons for delaying the announcement for next few days is they don’t want a “land grab” where people take the names of current popular Tumblr users over there (cyber squatting). So they are looking at ways for existing Tumblr users to keep the same names on the new site.

The plan is, broadly:

1. By December 9th, announcement of the new site and how to secure your username there

2. By December 10th, an online tool for bloggers to copy their existing content to the new site automatically, with the same tags and captions.

3. Bloggers will need to copy their content across between December 10th and December 17th if they want to use the automatic tool.

4. My understanding is that after December 17th there will be no public access to any “flagged” posts on Tumblr, but the original poster will still be able to see the flagged post (for a short time at least). Therefore, the original poster may still be able to manually download a post to their own PC or phone, after December 17th, and manually upload it to the other site. But if you have lots of posts that will take a long time, it will be better to use the automatic tool before December 17th.

Please understand that these dates are approximate and may change for technical or other reasons.

There may be a few rough edges or not so perfect looking site design on the transfer tool. Everyone is doing their best. The main goal here is to help as many people as possible preserve access to their content, in the short space of time Tumblr has allowed us, and preserve as much as possible of the Tumblr community spirit somewhere new.

The new site will cater for photo, GIF, text and html posts. It will not offer video and audio posts, due to cost reasons - maybe in future, but for now you will need to preserve video and audio content yourself in some other place.

If your Tumblr blog has a mixture of original content and reblogs, or all reblogs, all of that can be copied over to the new site. Reblogs will become “your” original content if nobody else posted them yet, otherwise they will be shown as reblogs. The devs are looking at ways to preserve attribution of reblogs back to the original Tumblr poster, if that person also moves to the new site.

Important: your Likes cannot be copied from Tumblr to the new site. You will have to go find the same posts again on the new site, and like them afresh.

(Similarly, existing reblog comments, asks, messages and other user interaction on Tumblr cannot be copied to the new site - that’s just too much to do, in the short time available.)

If you want to preserve any of your existing Liked posts on Tumblr, you will need to either: (1) download the post to your own PC, or: (2A) reblog it now to your own Tumblr blog, and then (2B) use the automatic tool, before December 17th, to move your whole Tumblr blog across to the new site.

If you have Liked a lot of posts here on Tumblr, the gridllr.com webapp should be able to help you do steps 1 and 2A quickly, I mean download or reblog.

(Someone complained to me today about the appearance of Gridllr on a phone. It’s best to use Gridllr on a PC, Mac or Tablet with a large screen.)

If you have liked a post here on Tumblr and the original poster decides to delete it, or even to delete their entire blog, some time before December 17th, then that post will be permanently lost. So if you want to be sure to preserve any of your Liked posts, you should best download or reblog as soon as possible. If it’s reblogged to your own blog it is safe from deletion, at least for next few days.

Obviously, you will lose access, after December 17th, to all past posts you have liked, if Tumblr has flagged them as NSFW. Again, the steps (1), or (2A) and (2B) covered above will be the only way to hold on to these posts.

I know buying/selling plots on XIV is kinda sketchy but good god. I have to rant.

15 million + for the right plot number for a SMALL, which, for the unfamiliar, is very small. Two floors, not very big floor space. You get the idea. That;s what I’m offering, anyhow.

Someone on the housing market subreddit sent me a message like ‘Would you go higher for this plot?’ which… Is in Shiro not the original 3 like I said I wanted, and in a not so good location to boot. So politely, I said no thanks, I’d offer 10 mil for that plot but I’d rather wait n see if I get offers or someone posts about a Goblet, Mist or Lav Beds first.

And they start sending me abusive messages and being all ‘you’re a fucking idiot’ just because I already have a Shiro house and want an original area plot guaranteed before 4.2 comes out lmfao

What a dick. Think it’s time to blow my nearly 30mil on that Shibe minion instead LOL

[Infomercial voice] Are you tired of trying to edit text in a tiny one-line box? Fed up with having to figure out where to split your glorious paragraph posts? Have you exposed at least moderately embarrassing RP to the wrong channel by accident? 

I have been watching and occasionally helping to build this little tool over the last week or so. FFXIV’s tiny chat box sucks to write long posts in and it’s awful to edit, too. Google Docs/Word/other text editors are handy, but they also won’t track where you need to split your posts up due to character limit.

This handy tool will tell you your character count/how many posts it needs to be split into, automatically append the designated channel to new posts, and will also automatically split your posts for you when it hits the cap.

It has a few other useful resources, like a dictionary/thesaurus search and a button to split up copypasted text into posts. It will likely see continued tweaking, but if you like what you see, please consider buying the creator a coffee.

PSA: more housing wards coming by 4.2

“Hello, everyone. This is FFXIV Producer and Director, Naoki Yoshida. 

Patch 4.1 saw the introduction of the residential area, Shirogane, and though we are pleased to see so many players enjoying this area, we also received a great deal of feedback regarding this newest addition to housing. 

While a great number of you were interested in either purchasing or relocating to a plot in Shirogane, we failed to prepare sufficient plots for players, and for that I deeply apologize. 

This problem was only made worse by the increased stress on the servers from players rushing to log in after the end of maintenance. As a result, the system implemented to prevent players from abusing the relocation feature failed to function properly, preventing some players from relocating altogether. 

Although this issue will be addressed in today’s hotfix, we understand this does not address the underlying issue. In light of the feedback we have received, we will be working to bolster our servers in preparation for additional wards in the Lavender Beds, the Goblet, Mist, and Shirogane by patch 4.2. 

We’ve also received considerable feedback as to how they should be added, and we will be making an announcement outlining the number of new wards and how they will be sold after reviewing said feedback. To prevent speculation, we will refrain from releasing information until absolutely necessary. We ask for your patience and understanding until we can provide you with these details. 

I hope we can count on your continued support, and that you all will continue to enjoy the various new content added in patch 4.1.”

The Earthenfist Climb - To the Closed Fist.

After the success of the Levinfist Tournament, Berrod has decided to host a climb to the Closed Fist. This time the event will not be a tournament, or a competition – simply a chance for brothers and sisters training in different ways of the fist to challenge themselves with but a portion of what the Fist of Rhalgr endured. 

The challenge will involve teams of four fist fighters (be they monks or pugilists) who will go into the Temple of the Fist to make their way to the Closed Fist. The climb is arduous, and fraught with peril. Not only will the fighters be made to contend with the ravages of what nature has done to the temple, but many of the training implements within the temple still exist to present themselves to those who enter. 

The challenge is not a race, there is no prize for first place, or for who goes the furthest. It is simply a means for fist fighters to gain perspective on their abilities and capacity against the challenges of old – to both honour and measure against the monks of the Fist of Rhalgr. 

Supporters and spectators from all walks of life are welcome, though is asked that proper respect be paid to the grounds. They are a holy place. All are free to offer supplication and prayer. Flagrant disregard for the sanctity of the location will not be tolerated – though requests for education and insight will be welcomed.

The event will send different four man teams into the Temple of the Fist instance. Teams will need to register by contacting me prior to the event (Tumblr, discord [ Berrod#9532] and in game [Berrod Armstrong] all work!). Teams are to consist of Monk/Pugilist class characters only.

Once inside, the teams will have 90 minutes to get as far as they can. Keep in mind that getting far is not a MUST. If your team wishes to make a slow roleplay experience out of it, that’s fine! If your team wants to fail on the first challenge, that’s also fine. If your team wants to try and struggle all the way to and past Arbuda, that’s also fine! The point is to set up a premise for fist fighting characters interested in the Fist of Rhalgr to have fun and interact with what the world has to offer. Please ensure that team members agree on which approach they wish to take before entering.

The event will be held on Friday November 17th at 8:30 PM EST at the Outer Fist within Rhalgr’s reach.
