Let's talk about Suden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy, also known as SUDEP.

Many epileptic people die from injury or from drowning as a result of a seizure, but if they don't have a clear cause of death aside from epilepsy itself, SUDEP is what sometimes gets put as the cause. SUDEP most often occurs during or shortly after a seizure.

1 in 1,000 people with epilepsy die suddenly and without explanation every year. That's 3,000 yearly in the US, 80,000 globally, and accounts for up to 17.5% of epilepsy-related deaths. The risk of premature death in people with epilepsy is up to three times higher than for the general population.

Now we must ask, how many of those 80,000 were my doing? Do I tag posts that have flickering, strobing, shaky camera work, rapid cuts, or certain sped up footage with #flashing lights? Do I make the digital spaces which I control safe for photosensitive people of all kinds?

If your report succeeds and an ad is marked as strobing, what that means, what it does is, they will still run the ad, but the next time it strobes in someone's face, that person can report it again to remove that instance of the ad from their feed.

Yes, that is too late. The seizure already happened. The user is already harmed, or dead.

Yes, even after reporting and removing an ad tumblr implicitly acknowledges is dangerous to photosensitive people, you will see the ad again after scrolling 5 posts down. They only remove

AFTER THE DAMAGE IS DONE,

DESPITE KNOWING BEFOREHAND.

AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO SELL AD SPACE TO REPEAT OFFENDERS.

By the way it's like. Really fucked how society's thoughts on epilepsy is just "get over it." Seizures can cause permanent brain damage. Seizures can kill people. Seizures hurt like hell. Allow me to reiterate that seizures can kill people. And you're just gonna casually put flashing lights, a common trigger for seizures in your advertisement, in your animation meme, in your edit, on your billboards, without even thinking about putting a simple disclaimer? That's unbelievable. Your little anime edit could deadass cost a life and you're not gonna put a warning because it's "inconvenient" or "people like that shouldn't be on the internet" (ableist) (the problem exists outside the internet also). Or you'll give insufficient ones like putting it in the captions or only giving like one second before the flashing lights appear, meaning that the trigger's already in motion before anyone who needs the warning can read it and save themselves from literal physical danger.

We need to start commenting under other people's posts about how to properly warn for flashing lights and eyestrain. We need to be emailing and calling companies about their possibly triggering advertisements that could induce seizures. We need to stop tolerating ableism and start speaking up for the more vulnerable.

Also, stop putting epilepsy warnings. That's like saying "warning: schizophrenia" on a post including unreality or "warning: dyslexia" on a post with a typing quirk. First off, the disability mentioned isn't the only group of people that this could trigger. Second, it doesn't truly get the message across and instead makes it worse for those with the disability-- scrolling through the epilepsy tag on Tumblr should get you to view the content of other epileptic people, but no, you just get a bunch of flashing lights and eyestrain, even though you could instead tag for, oh I dunno, flashing lights and eyestrain.

Anyways this Disability Pride, and for every month that comes after, think about epileptic people and others who are triggered by flashing lights/eyestrain. Happy pride to those who experience seizures too frequently due to the unaccommodating and ableist societies we live in!

I cannot even explain how ANGRY I am at this.

My nephew is very allergic to eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame. Last year my sister discovered all hot dogs and hamburger buns now contain sesame. Not "may contain", but listed in the ingredients. This year basically every brand of sliced bread also now contains sesame, making it very difficult to find bread items he can eat.

They're just adding it to their products, so they can just list it as an ingredient and not bother with worrying about cross contamination. And they aren't even bothering with telling anyone. Capitalism is going to kill us all.

one of the beautiful emergent things about the Add to Queue feature is that it elevates older and older content the longer you've been absent from the platform as a power user.

here's what i mean: i haven't looked at my dashboard for ~24 hours. i start scrolling, and it's ordered by newest first in Following, and i queue things that i want to reblog. as i scroll, i'm going backwards in time. the queue is first-in first-out, so the longer i scroll and add things, the longer it'll be til they get reblogged. so the last thing in my queue is the oldest thing in my feed since i was last here.

i think that's a beautiful thing because nobody planned it (because i know nobody planned it, i was there when the sacred texts were written).

Sometimes when I report an ad for strobing, or for other reasons, it'll immediately disappear.

Sometimes, it won't go away.

Is this a tacit admission that tumblr continues to run ads that violate its own guidelines, knowingly, puts dangerous ads in front of photosensitive users, knowingly?

And theyve decided that for the really bad ads that have already been reported, they'll keep collecting revenue, keep giving people migraines and seizures, until a particular user calls them on a particular ad?

Is that what's happening, here?

It's so strange, but the flashing ads tumblr was running which didnt go away when I reported them, didn't disappear immediately upon report. Well after enough reports, they do start disappearing.

But they're still being run, still being shown to me. It's just that when I immediately call them on it with a report, THEN they'll remove that instance of that ad from my dashboard, that time.

Then they'll show it again and again as I scroll down.

So it really does seem like tumblr knowingly runs ads that it has in explicit categories like "broken" or "gives users seizures"
