I have occasionally contemplated doing a read through of 50 Shades and posting “corrected” passages. I’m fairly certain I would lose touch with my sanity a few chapters in, But this is pretty short, so…

-“pointed finger” What is the point (ha!) of using pointed here? Fingers point, that’s what they do. Was “tip of his finger” not cool enough?

- “puckered love cave” No. Just no. I know euphemisms are hard and no one wants to use the word ass hole in the sex scene (unless you do, which is fine) but part of being a writer who writes smut is finding words for naughty things that don’t make people laugh in the middle of the sexy. Try “back passage” maybe? At least, I’m assuming it’s her ass, even though there’s no way that’s a love cave because vaginas don’t pucker.

- “he mewled” I have so many problems with her synonym choices to replace “said.” No one wants to write a whole novel of “he/she said” I get it. But words have meaning! “Mewled” has a connotation of distress, possibly in a whiny or high pitched voice. Kittens mewl. Damsels mewl. Alpha males about to deflower idiots don’t mewl. (They don’t coo, either, or hiss sentences that don’t have any s’s in them. But I digress…)

- “like a mother hamster about to eat her three-legged young” NO. This is a SEX SCENE. Hamsters aren’t sexy. Eating one’s crippled young? NOT SEXY. There are so many other similes you could use. Hell, if you wanted to stick with animals eating helpless things you could go with “cat who spotted a canary” which at least has tones of hunter and prey and strength and weakness.

And now we all see why I’d never make it through the book…
