It’s difficult to say why I love Shinhwa so much. I wouldn’t love them so much if they only made beautiful music. They make beautiful music (I especially love their ballads), but I love them for so much more than that.
It’s the 6 members’ incredible mutual support, friendship, and brotherhood, unbroken in their almost 19 years together as a group. It’s the sophisticated, soothing, energizing sounds of their music, which spans many genres including pop, R&B, hip hop, ballad, and electronic. It’s the talents each member possesses, talents that include singing and dancing (of course), choreography, composing, lyric-writing, acting, wit, variety show talent, DJ-ing, MC-ing, guitar, piano, clarinet, producing, writing, martial arts, cooking, etc. It’s the dedicated and unique relationship they have with their fans, each supporting the other with unwavering love but never hesitating to tease, put them in check, and criticize the other when needed. It’s their amazing personalities, so different yet so cohesive as a group. It’s their carefree image, as idols who have no qualms with showing their authentic selves on camera—whether that means showing their affection for each other, embarrassing themselves, cross-dressing, having farting contests, revealing themselves unshaven, un-hairstyled, and with makeup-free faces, or teasing and bickering with each other.
But perhaps most of all, it is their ability to endure; not simply because the group has been active for so long, but that they have managed to come so far despite the many hardships they faced. Those hardships, and the choices they made when confronted by them, enabled them to become the wonderful men they are today—and to continue their dream.
So I try to live by example. I try to think of my obstacles in life as stepping stones, as opportunities for me to achieve my goals. My goals are far off, and will take time to reach; but now I have some hope that I will one day get there. And I keep going. This is my Shinhwa.
