          Except for now. Now had not been the time for bad choices, and Vinri was surprised to note that they both knew it. 

          Features melding into an expression of reluctant agreement, she gives her companion a nod of acknowledgment. To cause a stir in a town that they had only been passing through would’ve been counterproductive, no matter how tempting. Maybe another time, after their goal was completed, after there was less concern occupying their minds. 

          “Weird, yes, but wise.” She drawls back, legs crossing atop the bedroll she’s currently resting upon. Hardly as comfortable as a real bed, true, but much preferable to the ground that would’ve taken its place had she lacked it. “Abiding by a few overly strict rules could’ve been worse, no?”

          “Valuable?” Tone heavy with skepticism, the bard looks down at the little trinket nestled atop her palms and can’t quell the doubt that settles over her features. It’s a pretty little thing, metal rings maneuverable around a rounded center the color of copper, but Lyra can’t imagine it being of any true significant value. If it had been, surely such a thing wouldn’t have been so easily bet in a game of cards inside of an inn of mediocre quality at best. 

          And surely it wouldn’t have been winnable by her of all people. 

          But the uncertainty is short-lived, for the quizzical expression she aims toward the trinket soon melds into something more akin to faux realization as she nods her head at the stranger. “I mean - yes! Yes, of course, valuable, valuable indeed.” Lips curling into a smile, the words that slip through them are of the utmost confidence if only mildly rushed. A pause, then an imploring quirk of an eyebrow as the entertainer gestures toward the little treasure with her chin. “Why? Do you want it?”

          The grin that tugs at her lips behind the fabric of a mask is evident if only by the way the corners of her eyes crinkle faintly. He’s not wrong, and the reminder of the crimes that run rampant in Gotham would be enough to put any of its inhabitants in a dour mood, but Stephanie can’t help but to find some amusement in the way he says it. Wholly relatable and equally unperturbed.

          How long had they been at this for it to become the norm?

          Feet dangling off of the edge of the rooftop that they’re perched atop, the blonde nods. And with it, a gentle nudge to his side with her elbow. “Well yeah, but that’s kinda a given, y’know? I mean, look.” Arm gesturing out toward the city below, a couple of cars pass by under the glow of dimly-lit street lamps above the few brave enough to walk the streets at night. Not particularly chaotic nor reason for worry at the moment, but the city never tended to stay so deceptively calm for long and she was confident that they both knew that by now. Anyone who stayed a night must’ve, she was sure. 

          “Besides patrolling. What’re you up to this week that doesn’t involve thwarting people in gaudy costumes wreaking havoc?”

          A sentiment that was most assuredly shared. It was by duty alone that they even deigned to interact with each other in the first place, the necessity of some semblance of decorum that kept barbed words from stoking tension to an unbearable level. Hardly surprising was it that the nobility of fire and that of water were different, Yue would’ve had apt reason for genuine surprise had they shared anything in common besides a mutual desire for the benefit of their people. The northern princess could relate, at least, to that- could respect that, could understand that, but it was no less of a displeasure to learn firsthand that it was as far as their similarities ran. 

          Azure eyes narrow just enough to be noticeable, chin tipping up in an equally indignant and unamused fashion that betrayed the passive demeanor she’d aimed to wear. A valiant effort she’d have cause to practice, for certain. 

          “I think it might be to our benefit to at least pretend to tolerate each other’s company.” The phrase is spoken genuinely despite the intermingling of a sigh and a huff that predates it, arms folding neatly in front of herself with all of the ease of a guarded motion practiced time and time again. Heavy was the burden of responsibility, hardly lightened by interactions held thus far. “That might make our interactions more passable by far.”

          How she wished that she could have warmer words of comfort, even a sense of understanding that might make conjuring up a response an easier feat. In truth, Portia couldn’t much relate to the idea of a gap in one’s memories, a space void of thoughts of the past and instead just...blank. Surely there might have been much that North was glad to not recall, but to be unsure of even that? Unfair, and should the handmaiden have been in their shoes, she would’ve found it wholly frustrating. 

          A pause, and while void of a verbal reply, she’s sure to offer the smallest of comforting smiles. To talk was something Portia had always been good at, but to listen came just as naturally and she could count herself touched that she’d been trusted enough to confide in. Even if prone to gossiping, she’d be sure not to let mention of their conversation slip to any unwanted ears, for there was a stark difference between the entertaining and the personal that she dared not breach.

          “I guess not, but- hey, look at it this way, there may just be a whole lot of unpleasantness that you’re forgetting.” Subpar at best. Really, she could do better. Nose crinkling at her own attempt at optimism, the redhead’s quick to set a palm atop her companion’s shoulder as her features meld to something sincere, more genuine. “Besides, you and that magician are pretty handy with magic, I’m sure there’s a solution out there. And even if not, there’re always new memories to be made too, promise.”
