it's kind of unnerving that Patton said Thomas had his "permission" to have intrusive thoughts in the newest video. It was controlling since intrusive thoughts are normal he shouldn’t need permission for something like that. I didn't realise how much Patton has been abusing Thomas and how manipulative he really is until you shed a light on it on the new videos.
This is a little trickier than you're putting it here, as Patton isn't a separate character from Thomas-- Patton is Thomas's morality. Essentially Thomas was giving himself permission to think those thoughts. Actively giving yourself permission to do something that you previously (and wrongly) believed was immoral is healthy.
So much of Patton's development during Thomas's life was a product of Thomas's religious upbringing. It was instilled in Thomas (and Patton) that you can think sinful thoughts, and sinning can land you in hell. Those are crazy high stakes that Christians are dealing with. Patton is just misguided in his desperation to protect Thomas, and to help Thomas be a good man (and a good man, is something that Thomas really wants to be).
I believe that 1. you shouldn't have a perfect character, and 2. the characters in this particular series, should demonstrate common shortcomings in the way that we interact with our brains and how our brains interact with us. I think for the longest time Patton's portrayal depicted a perfect, innocent, sweet character who could do no wrong. That's not true to life. Your heart and your morality can, in some cases, lead you astray. They can be wrong, and they can be harmful when they are wrong. It's easy for Patton to handle things smoothly when the issue at hand is a simple one, but as things get less black and white, and as you explore the darker reaches of your mind, your morality and your feelings can really complicate things.
If Patton was a separate person from Thomas, than there would be worse things to say about him. I personally think that the combination of viewing him as his own entity, as well as his portrayal in the past as kind of a perfect angel exacerbates how terrible his behavior seems now. Remember that he is the embodiment of Thomas's morality and Thomas's heart, who takes the form of a dorky dad, whose domain is the mindscape of a ruminator. Him taking Those hard stances are just Thomas's feelings of "THIS IS WRONG" or "YOU SHOULD DO THIS BECAUSE IT'S RIGHT!" Him worrying about whether or not Thomas is doing the right thing, is just Thomas worrying if he's doing the right thing. Him giving Thomas permission to do something he previously believed was sinful, is just Thomas giving himself a brake.
Patton as a character is a useful tool for making it more apparent when your morality is in the wrong, but when you zoom out and look at the situation for what it is-- a man struggling with his intrusive thoughts ultimately coming to understand that it's okay to think unpleasant things-- then it doesn't seem so extreme. I had to learn that it was okay to have intrusive thoughts in the past. I didn't always understand that it was completely normal. I thought that I was a terrible person for thinking about such horrible things. That was Thomas's journey with Patton and Virgil in the newest video.
