She’s not responding.

I mean I guess I deserve it, after every little stupid thing I did. I’ve known her for longer than I’ve known Yuji, or Nobara.

But, to this extent?

It’s been a whole month, and I haven’t seen her save for a quick pass-by in the hallways. She never speaks, doesn’t even look at me. I feel like such a dick. But it’s true. I guess I am.

“Put down the phone, Megumi.”

“Nobara.”

“You left the door open again. For her?” She took a seat beside me and smoothened her uniform skirt.

“Who else?” I sat up straighter.

“Megumi, she can’t talk anymore.”

“I know. I. It’s just. I want to talk to her. So bad, terribly even.”

“Well it’s not going to happen unless you apologize. And I really suggest you do, you stupid. I shouldn’t be telling you this.”

“… In person?”

“Obvi-fucking-ously, dude. You’re even stupider than I thought.” There she was. She then ran a hand down her face and made an exasperated expression and frowned.

“I … Is she okay? Have you seen her?”

“The petals? Yeah, they’re going down. She hasn’t coughed in a while.”

“Oh, thats great…. I guess. Still can’t talk and its all my fault.”

“It is.”

After she said that, my mind went blank. We talked for longer but I couldn’t make out anything she said. I spoke, but my voice was muffled to my own ears.

I missed her a lot.

I’ve always missed her, even when I had her.

One month ago, after Shoko stopped giving y/n the medicine.

You reply to some. Only few.

He sent you the screenshots of the groupchat, hoping it’d alleviate some of your pain. Sure, it did, now that Megumi realised who he really likes (as a friend. Platonic)

But it wasn’t enough to make you feel better.

Shoko had forced you to stop taking the medicine because a whole big bottle a week? She didn’t have the stock of herbs to mix anymore bottles.

Your only hope now was Megumi. If it got any worse, Gojo sensei would make you have the surgery. He’d force you to.

It’s been weeks since you’ve talked to anyone other than Gojo sensei, and occasionally, Shoko coming to check on how you’re feeling.

You ignore their texts, whether they’re trying to check up on you or just tell you what happened in their day. In Megumi’s case, it’s both. Not that you’d reply, anyway.

“I’ve been talking a lot less to you nowadays. I really hate myself for doing that. Well, Chiyu is still trying to… take your place… uh, quote unquote. I’ve realized it's not her. It can't be. You always talk about having soulmates and that… whatever. The red string? Red soulmate string. Or whatever. You always talk about it. I don't see a string for me and Chiyu. It's more likely I fall in love with Yuji than Chiyu. Whatever. I hope you get better soon. And please stop leaving me on seen. Or liked, or any other thing. I might come and check up on you later, with the spare key you left me in case you ever lost yours. Just saying.” (transcript of a voice recording he sent you. Not that you can talk and respond. Your voice is gone)

You stopped listening after he said to stop leaving you on seen.

You felt slightly better these past few days, with the medicine that Shoko made and leaving that god-awful group chat. But the flowers kept coming. They just wouldn’t stop. Your backyard is half filled with flowers. When counted, they’d total up to 30 (not including the unbloomed buds).

As you stood up to check on your backyard again, a loud thunder clapped high in the sky. It startled you. And… another flower landed on your floor. Shoko told you to take 5ml of the medicine every time you coughed out a flower, so you turned and.

There stood Megumi. He closed the door behind him.

“…Y/n,” he started, unmoving from his spot near your shoe stand. “What is that?”

You looked at the flower, then back at him. You shrugged. If he had any common sense, he’d figure it out.

“Hanahaki.

since when?” he knew the answer to that too.

You shrugged again, then proceeded to take the medicine Shoko gave you.

Megumi mumbled a quiet apology and left. He closed the door behind him.

This was to be expected. But why had he come? Why had he gone?

Later, he sent another voice message.

"YOU HAVE HANAHAKI???? BECAUSE OF ME??? Oh, I'm gonna beat myself up. I'm sorry. I really, really am. I should've realised earlier. I mean, how bad is it? I saw your backyard, so I guess it's pretty bad. Will you forgive me?"

His voice had an urgency in it, you'd never seen. How would you know, though?

You never listened to that one.

… You had fainted.

The bright morning sky is now dusky, with blue fading into orange. Wait. You weren’t on the bed when you fell.

As you looked around your room, the flower you had coughed up earlier was no where to be seen, and the blood cleaned up. You stood up, but a sharp pain rang through your head. You felt as if you were going to fall again. Until,

“Woah, don’t want you falling again, kid.” a reassuring hand and the unmistakable glint in Gojo sensei’s voice brought you back to the world.

Gojo sensei? When did he get here? You turned to face him. “I got here when you fainted, 10 minutes after I saw you running like a mad-man.” He could read minds. Right.

He escorted you back to your bed and sat you down. “Care to explain? I saw the flower and the blood. I cleaned it up.”

You took your phone and began typing.

After he left, you put your phone down and waited for him to come back.

Your secret was out. Now, you were sure Gojo sensei would not tell anyone about what was going on with you. He was trustworthy. But, what would happen if your secret was out?

He came back and set the medicine down on your side table. “She said to take it every time you felt as if you were going to cough.”

You offered him a smile as thank you.

It's Monday. You feel infinitely worse, but you decide to stop pitying yourself and go to school. Even if it meant seeing Chiyu for the first time since last Monday.

Megumi had sent you a text the previous night asking whether you'd be coming. You said yes. He sent a smiling emoji and said he'd save a seat beside him. Why? For no reason, you told yourself. If you were getting worse, there was no need to hope. Megumi likes Chiyu, you'd be dying soon. That's it. So, why was the seat in the back of the classroom? Why was Chiyu sitting beside Megumi?

You took that seat and all eyes in the room turned to you (all 8, since you only had 4 classmates) and the obvious question sprung up from Nobara.

"So, how're you feeling?" she asked. As if your pale face and trembling hands couldn't tell her. You scribbled something down in your notebook and showed everyone.

"Oh my god, you can't even tell us through your voice?" Chiyu sneered upon seeing the note. I stared. She continued, "Looks like she doesn't like us. hahaha...." Oh. You wanted to beat her up. Until she said that, you hadn't coughed. Not for the entire night. It had been, what, 5 minutes since you entered class? You could feel a cough about to pass through your throat, this time, 100% carrying a full-bloomed flower. It hurt. Terribly. So, you did the only thing you could, and rushed out of the classroom.

Behind you, you heard the shuffling of a chair and the call of your name from everyone but Chiyu. She just giggled. "Just sit back down, guys, she doesn't want to talk to you."

You had no idea why she hated you so much. She'd transferred from Kyoto, so possibly, she could've heard about you. But from how she was dead-set on befriending Megumi and getting you into this mess, it just made you more confused.

You ran out, passing Gojo sensei, who called out your name, but seeing as you didn't answer, just stood watching as you ran through the hallway. When you made it to your dorm, you coughed, and there lay a whole flower. It was a bright pink peony, stained with your blood.

Your throat was on fire. Ignoring the many messages from your friends, you pulled out your phone and began texting Gojo sensei.
