How to Look Flawless on a Regular Basis: A Guide by Diantha
As if the loudĀ thump of the pizza box hitting the floor wasnāt indicative enough of the effect her mom had on her, Yvonneās defeated drop into the beanbag had Calem feeling guilty. Yvonne didnāt seem to handle her jokes with as much stride as he did.
The beanbag she pushes towards him is a worn blue to match her red one, a gift from her mother after seeing them try to share one for far too long.
He sets himself into the beanbag lightly, as not to disturb his arm. His legs sprawl out to match Yvonneās posture, and he runs a hand through his dark fringe.
"Yeah. We havenāt really had much time, between challenging gyms and trying to figure out what those guys with the red pompadours are up to."
Yvonne kicked her stocking covered legs out behind her, idly moving them back and forth as though she couldn't quite lay still.Ā
"Ugh, god, those guys. They're some irritating assholes. And, might I add, all that red is a crime against fashion." She tried to look quite serious, but only lasted a moment before giving in and laughing. "I don't know, it's some weirdo modern cult thing they've got goin' on. They all stand out like sore thumbs so I wonder what kinda trouble they're actually capable of causing."
Shrugging one shoulder, she reached out to flip the pizza box open and grab one of the cold slices. "So, tell me what's up. It feels wrong to have gone this long without talking, it's been killin' me."
Yvonneās embarrassment is contagious, and Calem feels the skin of his cheeks begin to warm as well. The older woman appears to conceal a laugh by covering her mouth with her hand.
"Yeah, yeah. Nice seeing you again, Calem. Thereās garlic sauce down here if you guys decide you want some."
Bowing his head in response, he makes to follow Yvonne up the stairs before quietly thanking her mother. Her sense of humour could be quite inappropriate, but to say he wasnāt used to it after 6+ years would be unreasonable.
Gripping the railing with his good arm, he follows Yvonne up the stairs and down the hallway into her room, the frustration still rolling off of her.
"Donāt worry about it, she was just being silly."
Storming up the steps, all but stomping along the way, she led Calem away, hoping to leave the embarrassment behind. "She's gross." Yvonne grumbled, shutting her bedroom door with a decisively thud.Ā
Dropping the pizza box onto the floor in the center of the room, Yvonne let herself fall onto a beat-up old beanbag chair that barely served its purpose after so many years. "Pretending that never happened-" She stretched herself across the floor and crossed her arms under her chin onto the beanbag. "We need to catch up."
Looking up, she gave the other beanbag a shove toward her friend and found herself grinning. She couldn't let her mom's usual weirdness dampen their long over-due bonding time.
The slight pinch to Yvonneās eyes is all Calem needs to know to brace himself. Mme Ceriseās raised brow could mean many things, but right now her eyes are fixed on her daughterās awkward stance and occasionally glancing at the cast on her visitorās wrist.
āFell on him, huh?ā She mused, the negativity rolling off her daughter in waves merely pushed to the side. āItās not every day that a man gets that lucky, Calem.ā
Itās not as if Calem was unused to this tone from her mother, but any other time he would probably laugh with her. What keeps him from doing so this time is the fact thatā well, he broke a fucking bone, and than Yvonne looks none too pleased from having to rat herself out.
After so many years, she should have seen it coming, should have been smarter about the way she worded it- and yet she was still stunned by her mother's reply.
"Mom! Augh!" She could actually feel her face turning red, from irritation she'd say, though truly just out of sheer embarrassment. "That's sick. I felt out of a tree- he woke me up and I just-!" Sighing, Yvonne dragged her hands over her face. "Forget it! C'mon Calem let's go upstairs." Her eyes went a little wide and she held her hands up in front of her to stop any reply her mom may have had. "To eat pizza and play games, Mom."
[[been away a while. probs gonna do stuff soon. idk.
Look, just forget it. I didnāt sign up for teaching you that sorta thing.
I COULD explain it. I just do not want to.
If anyone would like some starters from my new Cynthia over here, you should hit me up.
I'm in the mood to play her.
ā¦.I really donāt want to be the one to explain that to you
You seemed to bring it up pretty easily.
Look, just forget it. I didn't sign up for teaching you that sorta thing.

As slippered feet pad into the hallway, Calem is there with a pleasant smile and a shy wave of his uninjured hand. Yvonneās mom was sharp tongued, but she has always been kind to him.
"Hello, Mme Cerise. A pleasure to see you again."
And itās here that he expects Yvonne to roll her eyes, snort in a way thatās always said āyou donāt need to be soĀ politeā. But time heās spent away from home lays the courtesy thick on his tongue, especially with the way Yvonne looks like she wants to make a mad dash up the stairs.
The slightest twitch of a brow in Yvonneās direction is his own silent request to retake control of the situation. The cast was not exactly subtle, and playing 20 questions with her mother about it was not high on his list of priorities.
The way he shoots what she considers a helpless look, has Yvonne wanting to scowl at him. It was his suggestion to even bug her mom. She considers available lies, staring at her friend's face for a few seconds while trying to construct a story.
But most any story would leave him looking like a fool, and the guilt she felt for causing the accident had in no way alleviated. She couldn't blame him, not even to avoid the way she knew her mother would look at her, already feeling the judgement as she tore her gaze from Calem. "Uh, yeah, mom. I kinda... fell on Calem and... broke his wrist." Oh the negative vibes would be nearly tangible.
