Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

Idk if I’m just being a curmudgeon or something but I feel like sooo many…modern tv shows, movies are doing my Biggest Terribly Written Pet Peeve in that plot points try to act like there’s some kind of deep emotional resonance for things that haven’t been earned, developed, or built towards at all. People die or lines are dramatically delivered and I’m like…what have you done to make me really care about this? I feel like literally everything is being supplemented by generative AI or something. Everything is SO disappointingly written. And I feel like I’m the only naysayer being like ‘this sucks???’ Is it just me…are most mainstream things coming out now trash that are pretending they aren’t trash?

Anyway…I’m leaving again, sorry to be a vague hater, but I wanted to rant to the void.

I want to give an example of something that is the opposite of this that felt so successful to me, and was done in a single line of writing rather than a meandering disjointed season of Certain Shows with one-note characters that have no development beyond Expositiony Dialogue to move the story forward.

I watched Widow’s Bay a little bit ago, great fun. And in the first episode you get the premise of the mayor of a picturesque but supernaturally cursed New England island desperately trying to bring tourism to it, to liven it up economically, to get it on the cultural map in any way possible. He’s a single dad with his restless teen son who is always trying to rebel in his small teen ways because being stuck in the small unchanging town one grew up in is boring and stifling. And he’s the mayor—surely he wants to have a thriving tourism fueled island for all the reasons you’d think a mayor would. Surely his waving off of local superstitions is because he doesn’t take stock in such silly things and he’s being set up as the Classic Skeptic Who Is Going To Learn A Lesson character. At one point, the mayor is asked, half jokingly by a visitor, ‘I’ve heard that people who are born on this island can never leave, that they die as soon as they do”.

And that little line instantly throws everything about his actual character and motivations and actions into such a clear and emotionally resonant relief. He believes it, and is scared of the possibility. He needs this island to flourish so his son doesn’t want to leave. So his son doesn’t die. And he doesn’t ever look at the camera and say that. He doesn’t need to. That’s what a developed character and a nicely placed line of dialogue does. That’s nice, smart writing. More of that please.

the fucked-up part is that I specifically notice this in like, BIPOC or queer romances because their authors a) are more likely to be harassed online b) tend to care about writing inclusive and intersectional books more, both of which are totally valid reasons, but unfortunately a book that is scared to be misunderstood is also scared to challenge the reader or allow for too much nuance or grey areas or character flaws and I am sorry to say that it often makes for less compelling stories because it means shying away from ambiguities and complexities in an effort to reassure me, the reader, that everyone here is a Good Person engaging in Healthy Behaviours and Relationships
