“Well, m’massively apologetic to have scared a pretty girl like ya’. Forgive me?” he asked, taking her hand in his as he moved his lips over the back of her palm --- though with mischievous eyes never leaving hers until after he’d released her hand. “Kayley, that’s a nice name. I like it.”

As she heaped the golden-orange goodness onto her breakfast, she couldn’t help but cringe at the mention of Jack shacking up with anyone. “Please, don’t ruin my breakfast when it’s only barely started,” she implored, dead pan despite the twist of disgust marring her lips. “Besides, who could it possibly be? He’s too in love with quidditch and being a wet blanket with Suul to seduce anyone.”

He couldn’t fight the cheeky smile that rose to his lips, tipping them upward. “The team’s got bets that you two’ll end up together eventually, ‘cept m’self of course. I’ve got you down for Cadmus’ harlem,” he quipped, taking a cup of nettle tea between his hands. “Lotta’ people make that list, now that I think ‘bout it. I oughta’ take some notes from the bloke.”

Adroit. He’d always had a knack for manipulating people since he’d been a child, a quirk in his lips easy to sway candies out of the hands of other children and coin from the wallets of relatives. However, it hadn’t been enough for him, never had. Soon enough, he had people ripping their own hearts out for him and he knew an adoration that made him shiver with pleasure. Bodies opened to him, allowing him to climb inside and build a home, to ravage and ravage and ravage until he left nothing but dust. 

Naivety something dangerous with him, and she had it. He loved that about Lucky, if he loved anything at all, and relished in her flushed cheeks and stammered speech. Orion saw a home in her, if home was a place you destroyed from the inside out, and maybe that was wrong, but he didn’t have the capacity to care. Calloused hands smoothed over his hair as he stood amongst a busied crowd which swarmed around him with weekend buzz, the dark brown hues of his eyes scrutinizing the faces past for one. Lucky.

“Stuff it, Rosier- y’aren’t half as slick as you’d like t’think y’are.” With a mouth already half full of bagel, the blonde plopped down at her typical seat at the Ravenclaw table, glancing down the length of it and frowning slightly. “Y’can pass me the marmalade though, in lieu of another over used line. Have y’seen Jack this morning? I wanted to talk to him about that new play from practice the other morn’…”

“Or so y’think, Rosie,” he remarked, reaching for the aforementioned food as he listened on to her. How normal, he felt, on days like these --- days where he was all parts small talk and friendly teasing and breakfast with his friends, even if none of it was ever real. He dropped off the marmalade in front of her with a soft smile on his face. “Haven’t seen ‘im actually. Shackin’ up with a girl, is he? Must be if he’s missin’ a meal,” he spoke around a bite of sausage in corner of his mouth.

“Your girl?” Lucky repeated, the incredulity in her words undermined by her tone, and her inability to quite mask her happiness. “Somehow I get the feeling you won’t have too much competition. Just a feeling.”

“Yeah, f’sure. Can’t let these other blokes get the jump on me then, yeah?” he remarks, falling back a few steps as he looked to head off. “See you this weekend, Lu.”

“My bleedin’ good looks appear to scare even Hogwarts’ brave lions, I suppose. Though it must be rather startlin’, I know, to find someone so unfathomably handsome as m’self,” he remarks, shoulders tugging upward in candid earnesty.

Lucky couldn’t help but mirror Orion’s smile, his proximity only drawing attention to his dimples, and the way his grin pulls up slightly more on one side, his crooked smile unfailingly charming. “Just because I can lie doesn’t mean I do—and Hogsmeade this weekend sounds perfect.”

“Alright, I’ll see you then. I mean, I oughta’ show you off, yeah? Can’t let these other blokes try to make a move on m’girl,” he remarks, pressing a kiss to her cheek, unable to fight the sly grin in his face.

I like a girl that’s plain about what she wants, even unconsciously,” he teases, a bit of a bitterness behind his words, but one that’s easy to hide beneath a charming grin. “Seriously, Lu, you and me. “True.” Artie nodded, “Christmas break is on the rise though. I’ll be here, of course. Perhaps, we could try and decide by then?” Anger flickered in those dark eyes momentarily at the thought of Christmas which meant being around his family. His mother’s family, at least. The Weasleys he rather liked being around, both he and his twin did – but it was the other side, the one that raised them that both shared an opinion on. “If push comes to shove, we can always throw my sister’s cat off. Buggering thing, that.”

“Sure thing, mate. Y’ought to think about coming back with me for a bit, if y’like --- the Rosier household’s quite a bit o’ fun,” he commented, ever cognizant gaze catching the flicker of anger, interest piqued by it. What was it, collecting in his mind that could have brought such a look to his eyes? “Ya’ sister’s cat, huh? Fine by me, I’ve never been much of a cat person m’self t’be honest.”

“You—” her voice trembles with the sheer force of her heart racing, “You can’t just do that!” For all her effort, she doesn’t manage to sound indignant, just breathlessly excited and a little nervous. She’s certain her cheeks must be bright red, feeling like she can’t quite catch her breath. “You can’t just go around—kissing people like that!” The intended effect might be better achieved if she disentangled one of her hands from his, or drew away, but she can’t make herself.

There’s a sound, not quite laughter, more amusement, that follows her breathless replies — it’s almost even smug. “So, does that mean you wouldn’t like it if I did again? If I had the audacity to ask you out afterwards? I mean, your mouth is telling me one thing, but your eyes, another. Gotta work on that poker face, Lu,” he teases, reaching one hand up to swipe his index over her fiery cheeks.

“I don’t know if I can…” He whined, slapping both hands to his cheeks, dragging them down slowly. Artie let out a tortured sigh, fulling leaning his body on the railing, arms on either side of him, idle. “It’s so hard. I can’t decide. That one has red hair. And I do like red – not b’cause of my own, of course. Or maybe b’cause of’t.” He sighed again. “I d’nno.”

“How about you take some time to think on it? We’ve got all year to toss brats over this railing,” he assures, winking slyly at the red-headed boy. It was almost too easy to appeal to his desires, even as volatile as he was, and Orion appreciated that. A tough job was never his favorite, Artie unconsciously earning uncommon favour with the Ravenclaw.
