My own version inspired by Urmila Raini
1. Ilustrator- Urmila Raini - I like the expression used in the images and the depth that can be created with layers https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/198510296058042394/
Narrative Photograph Collage
3. Photographer - Slim Aarons - The way Slim Aarons uses the rich and famous as his focus brings a sense of hierarchy to his images. It also creates a view of a sort of ‘American Dream’, which he captures through the rich colours within his images.Â
I like the way Aarons uses colour to create a focus within the image, which also creates a natural focus point for the eye. The layers he uses within his work is also interested as creates a narrative within every shot and leaves a lot to think about; in each of the images above there are many questions that could be asked which I like about Aarons work
2. Andy Warhol - The Saatchi ‘Selfie to Self Expression’ exhibition was a powerful way to communicate the change in selfie throughout time.
Warhol’s portrait really caught my eye, firstly because of the colour and secondly because of the composition. The vivid colour and contrast with the black gives the image an outer space quality. The style of print also suggest a romantic pop sense, which creates an image of Warhol that that speaks about his personality within art. The black line also creates depth within the image and bring a central focus point to the face and eyes, keeping the face from being lost within the vivid colour.
1. Photographer - Lonneke van der Palen, a Dutch fashion photographer who work with BYBROWN, the designer I am currently interning for, has a great sense of colour and composition throughout her work. I especially like the top right hand image, as it shows the rain dress in a fashion sense, which create intrigue as to what the garment is and how you use it.
The use of light and reflection in the bottom images draws the eye in a vertical line, creating a central focus point of the images which makes them really strong pieces .
‘What is Cultural Triangulation?’
Cultural Triangulation is a process used by trend forecasters which is a more structured and strategic way of researching trends than the processes explained in the previous chapter precis. Raymond suggests that ‘soft’ (intuition) and ‘ hard’(surveys) skills are combined to create a quantitative outcome. This way of forecasting is favoured by bigger companies for that reason. Companies will start research in stages and steps to make the results measurable, easy to follow and accurate. This way of working is now adopted by market researchers and economists, as well engineers and scientists who are continually searching for what it is that Early Adopters and Innovators are motivated by and how it will affect the wider market.Â
Cultural triangulation is made up of 3 process: Interrogation, Observation and Intuition.
The first step: ‘Information Amnesty’. A survey will be given to the client so that the forecaster can question what they know about the market. This is used to create a clear and constructive route for he forecaster to continue with. Only when the company has been questioned, and the information obtained, can the market be analysed. The second step: ‘Subject Framing’, where basic research tools, like the internet, are used to find the wider market that will be investigated. Forecasters can also create an overview of early trends, areas of investigation and people to interview. The third step: Quantitative surveys, are given to the market being investigated and will categorise areas such as, name, age, gender, income and ethnicity. Of course, to make the research more accurate and robust, the researcher has to undertake both the qualitative and quantitative part of the research. The main outcome for quantitative surveys, is to create a more personalised approach to the market, as it gives the research the chance to observe the chosen market closely, giving the investigation more depth. The research may also use their intuition at this stage to piece together where the gap in the market it is and who the consumer is.
Ethnographic Mapping, is a way of tracking behavioural activities of a market. Therefore, surveying and interrogating the consumer is the ideal way to accumulate information for a forecasters report. However, it is not only by surveying, but also by physically observing the consumer in which this information can be found. For example, Forecasters can work with film makers or photographers to observe how over 60′s are spending their money. Ethnographic mapping is important for the forecaster to be better able to understand how the Early Adopters are consuming and behaving.
After the forecaster has gained all the information they need, it is a very important stage of Cultural Triangulation to put intuition towards the facts, figures and opinions that have been gathered. This would mean using everyday logic and expanding it to find possible solutions and answers in the given market.
