Oh man oh man I'm so happy someone asked this ahah... its something I feel pretty strongly about! For starters, let me establish I'm focusing mainly on Osomatsu (because. Reasons) and also, none of this is 100% confirmed by staff, but this is my take on it. I find the subtlety of the issue in a gag serious makes it even more relatable tbh!!

We'll start in numerical order, way back in episode 2 of season one. Oso finds himself home alone, which is what we can assume to be an irregular occurrence. After essentially stalking them in pursuit of some brotherly bonding time, he gets pretty pissed at their lack of interest in him. He even tells Chibita he'd rather be born an only child, which we know now to be bullshit. He acts pretty dejected for the rest of the episode, though no one really notices.

Skip ahead to episode 5's Esp Kitty. After Ichi's freak incident with Nyanko and his pretty obvious regret, it's Oso who is the most understanding and brotherly of all. This could be a stretch but I think it ties in with the opposites attract mechanism in parkamatsu (and suuji, but it's more apparent), being Ichi is afraid of rejection while Oso wears his heart on his sleeve 99% of the time. Again, just my opinion. Parka's some good shit.

The more concrete evidence comes in at episode 9, where we really get an insight to how bad loneliness affects him. He's definitely the most pissed after finding out about Jyushi's girlfriend, because it's supposed to be him getting a girlfriend, he's the oldest, the titular sextuplet, and He's the one who sets the example. He still does the right thing in the end, bless his soul.

There's also the sanematsu skit. While I don't believe in the "Osomatsu's an only child who made up his brothers" theory, I do think it could be foreshadowing a grim result in missing his brothers so much, either at the end of Letter or Sakura.

Aaaaand then we skip ahead to Letter. What I feel about this episode has been said a million times over at this point, but basically, without his brothers, Oso doesn't feel like anybody, and this realisation hits him like a TRUCK. Que chemical imbalance in the brain, a side effect of mental illness (most notably depression) which causes the person to lose complete interest in life, bringing up aggressive episodes occasionally. Which is fairly spot on to what we see in Oso.

On to Season 2!! Everything's happy and light hearted again, but the kicker here is the side effects of episode 24 remain. Karamatsu's lost respect for his onii-chan, Choro's grown a coldness towards him, Ichi's grown more fed up of his antics. (No difference with Jyushi or Totty, I don't think). It's driven home just how aware Oso is of his inability to be his own person, with how everyone perceives him. (Episode 2, his bros painting him as he's always looked because there's nothing special about him, and then Totoko reiterating that fact.)

Then we have another sanematsu segment. If Sane is indeed a Bad End deriritave of Oso, the whole "don't make me say it" conversation gains some extra depth. Of course, Sane dies, which could play into Oso's shift in gear, the Bad End is dead, avoiding another Letter incident in this season's episode 24.

Which, of course, was the best episode ever made. Sakura proves to us that Oso is capable of making the right decision when not forced too. He's become more self aware, he needs to make a decision that his brothers will willingly follow, a decision which will benefit his family. All looks well since he's avoided the whole I Have No Reason To Live Without My Brothers front, but it's given him a different problem. Without My Brothers, Who Am I?

He's spending less and less time with his bros, more time by himself. He's not acting as he does when around them. He's not acting as the self he's always known to be him, so is that really who Osomatsu is? If not that, then what? What's his purpose now? That was probably his train of thought while he sat disassociating in the rain for hours. That's a pretty big red flag that he's not super okay all of the time.

I would like to think that he came to the conclusion that self-doubt like this is just part in parcel of growing up and finding your true self, and that's what he was going to share with his brothers. BUT OF COURSE STAFF FUCKED US OVER AND SENT THEM ALL TO HELL IN TYPICAL OSOMATSU SAN FASHION. Otl.

TLDR; Staff are a bunch of smart cookies who made the seemingly most bland character into the most complex, with enough emotional experiences that make him a relatable and compelling protagonist and husband material. Seriously, if you're like me and suffer from mental illness, Ichi and Kara are all well and good but Oso is objectively the most realistic of the lot. He needs more love. HE'S ALSO A FUCKING SWEETHEART??

• He's so used to praising his brothers over such trivial achievements, he'll stare at you blank faced for a moment.

• But as you go on to tell him that you've never really been acknowledged like that before, he feels something in his heart clench. Since he's the eldest, he's never really been praised much either. Come to think about it? You're the only one who actively does these days.

• He completely softens up. "Hey now. Im only praising you because I think - nah, I know you're pretty great. Uh... it makes me really happy when you praise me too, y'know. So let's keep praising each other in support, yeah? Us against the world, babe."

• He'll plant little kisses all over your face, then probably suggest a little love-making to lighten the mood, knowing him.

Karamatsu:

• You've been crying for about .001 seconds before he wraps you up in a strong yet sweet embrace.

• "Oh, my honey. It plagues me that you have not received but the sweetest words for your efforts. But no longer! I will do everything in my power to ensure you are aware of your virtues at all times!"

• He relishes in praise himself, so if you butter him up enough he'll probably have a little weep himself.

• He'll hold you until you're quite literally begging him to let go as you do, in fact, enjoy breathing.

Choromatsu:

• Tenses up as soon as you get emotional. Immediately thinks he's done something wrong, that he's upset you, until he manages to compose himself enough to listen.

• He's honestly pretty surprised that you haven't gotten much validation, he thinks you're super charming!

• "W-what? You've never been..? That's awful... well, if it makes you feel any better, I really do think you're something special, a-and you mean a lot to m-me..

Oh God, I made this embarrassing..."

• Be careful when praising Green. He'll either get super bashful or super self-absorbed. He is still Rising Chorofappyski, after all.

Ichimatsu:

• He would have been extremely nervous to compliment you in the first place, through fear of you finding it pathetic. So it may have come through some divine intervention (ie, esp kitty).

• Freaks the holy hell out once you start crying. Begins apologising profusely for letting something so stupid come out, he didn't mean to be a creep, but... what?

• "You... ah, I guess we're alike, then. The difference being, you definitely deserve more praise. You're really lovely, and kind, and sweet, and you even put up with trash like me..."

• Kitty cuddles all around! Make sure you let him know he's loved too, he needs it.

Jyushimatsu:

• He's really confused! You're his super special sunflower! You're really something else! How is everyone else too dumb to see that? He tilts his head.

• "Hey, Hey! No tears! You only deserve super big smiles, okay! Super big smiles for my super sunny y/n! Here, I'll show you just how muuuuuch you mean to me!"

• He runs off, and returns five seconds later with a bouquet of, you guessed it, sunflowers. They remind him of you because they make him happy, so they should make you happy too, right?

• He puts a flower in your hair and gives you an eskimo kiss. You're definitely smiling now.

Todomatsu:

• He's probably called you a cutie in public, while shopping. It's an offhand comment, just something to make you feel appreciated.

• He initially feels guilty once he realises that's an oddity for you, but figures it's his responsibility to give you all that you missed out on before, right?

• "Awww, hey, don't cry! I promise you, I'll do whatever it takes to make you feel just as cute as you look, okay? Why?! Isn't it obvious?! I love you, silly!"

• He buys you a frappé to keep your mind off it, but you wake up next morning to an Instagram post going over just how much you mean to him.

If you had to summarise Choromatsu up in one word, it would be sincere.

Your first encounter had been at the library. The local establishment was a blessing to you, as it has a number of resources a lá audio books and Braille manuscripts stocked that would otherwise be a nightmare to find. You weren't particularly enthused by the number of textbooks or tabloids, but there were a number of stories that would take your imagination places you could only see in your mind's eye. It was bliss.

Your trip to the library was usually bi-monthly, with today being no exception. After returning whatever it was you had borrowed out last time to the front desk, you made your way down the usual route to the second floor.

Your friend had given you reccomendations on what to read next, so you start there. Sure enough, there's an audio book to go along with the novel. You zoned out, finding comfort in the narrarator's voice.

"E-excuse me..."

You were roused from your relaxed state when a young man clad in green plaid approached you. He seemed embarrassed, his voice escalating a few octaves when you turned around to face him.

"Yeah, what is it?"

"W-well, I just so happened to hear you listening to something, and I recognised the manuscript to be from a book series I really like! It's the one about the 15 siblings, each with their own quirk, right? It starts off as a humorus ordeal, until the quirks get less and less realistic, and it turns out the eldest was imagining the existence of them all in the first place! I cried really hard at the last chapter." He sniffled for effect.

Ah. You had forgotten to put your headphones in.

On top of that, you had just gotten the entire story spoiled.

He didn't take your silence too well.

"A-ah! I'm so sorry! I just spoiled the whole thing! I'm an idiot! Please forgive me..." He stumbled over his words, red faced.

You couldn't find it in you to stay mad.

"Hey, it's fine, it's fine! You didn't spoil the... whole thing! (he did.) Plus, it kinda makes me more invested in the series now, knowing there's a huge plot twist to come!" You smiled kindly at him. "Besides, it was my fault for not plugging my headphones in."

The relief that spread across this man's face... was adorable. You laid a hand on the banned next to you, patting it. "Hey, why don't you sit with me and we can listen to it together? I'd like to talk about it with someone, if that's okay?"

"YES! YES! I WOULD LOVE TO! I-I mean, if that's okay with you, of course."

Since then, you and Choromatsu had met up at the library once a week. At first it was mainly about stories, but it didn't take too long for you to talk about whatever came to mind. He was great company, and had a fair share of stuff to say that would always make you laugh.

He was a bit of a safety man, though. He'd constantly make sure you turned at the right corner, asking if you needed help with every basic action. After patiently explaining to him that you had, in fact, survived pretty well up until this point in your life without anything dreadful happening, he left you to your own devices, still vaguely wary.

At your latest hang-out session, he seemed even more nervous than when you first met. It took him a good ten minutes to muster up the courage to speak.

"Ah, so, you're a pretty great person, y/n. You're always really sunny, and you always help pick up my mood. You're really patient with me, and you always have something encouraging to say..." He cleared his throat. "Y-you see, I was just w-wondering, if you'd like to spend some time with me outside the library for once..? Kindoflikeadate?" He winced, waiting for the inevitable.

He did not expect the inevitable to be you, tackling him in a bear hug, planting excited kisses all over his face.

He was extremely flustered, sure, but he certainly tried to return the favor with as much passion as you had shown him.

Butterfly Matsus!

But, like, also? Y'all should check out @ask-mothneets I love their blog so frickin much and I’m sure you guys will enjoy it too!!

Osomatsu:

A monarch butterfly. Really just living his life drinking nectar from flowers and fruits. He’s the most recognizable butterfly, with gorgeous wings that he sort of takes for granted.

“Yeah, I guess they’re pretty, but? Who cares?” He’d ask nonchalantly, unconsciously flapping his wings. He’s not begging for attention, far from it. He just doesn’t see the point in being pretty, but isn’t against the idea. He’ll sometimes indulge in a little preening, but that’s about it. He doesn’t do much of anything special.

His daily life is spent eating nectar and then flying around to bug others. He’s really mischievous and loves getting to flowers before Chibeeta can, but is also incredibly reliable and always shares his food with all types of other insects.

His favorite nectar comes from the zinnia flower. And he loves to drink from watermelons!

Karamatsu:

A blue Morpho. His wings are shining and brilliant and the name is a nod to Venus, the goddess of love. A blue Morpho is a perfect fit for him 💙 He loves getting water droplets on his wings to make them even more incredibly shiny, so much so that they’re almost blinding.

“Ha? How’s that, my Karamatsu sunshines?” He’d cry, spreading his wings out so that the light from the sun hits them and makes them sparkle.

Truth be told, his wings are incredibly beautiful. He takes care of them nicely and they’re pretty impressive. He takes pride in his beautiful wings, but also helps caterpillars who have lost their way.

His favorite nectar comes from hydrangeas and orchids, but he absolutely loves any type of fruit and would probably choose fruit over nectar if offered. Not too picky about what fruit he drinks, but will probably choose cherries or papaya if he has to.

Choromatsu:

Green hairstreak! He hides himself in bushes and shrubbery, the green color of his wings camouflage him perfectly. As opposed to others of his species, he dislikes conflict and only ever goes out of hiding for food.

Usually the type who looks down on those that waste their day with rivalries over mates, but is just jealous cause he’s a virgin. Tries to help other smaller insects, but can hardly help himself. He’s great at giving survival advice though.

“Be careful, okay?” He chides, watching caterpillars off as they walk off and aim towards forming their cacoons.

His favorite nectar comes from daylillies and roses, and he strictly sticks to nectars because he feels that going out of his way to get fruit is dangerous. Will choose bananas though, if he has a choice!

Ichimatsu:

Neonympha mitchellii! These butterflies are known for liking warm climates and being on their own. His daily life is usually hanging in trees with whatever creature walks his way!

He usually just sticks to himself and enjoys warm areas, but also really, really likes being surrounded by few other butterflies. Surprisingly gets along with cats, and hangs low enough in trees so that he can hang out with them.

“Heh… Be careful on your way down, yeah?” He usually says while watching his cat friends climb or jump down.

Favorite nectars come from black-eyed Susies and dark colored tulips! He usually sticks to nectars but will indulge in some fruits every now and then! He’s not picky about fruits, but will choose blackberries if given a choice!

Jyushimatsu:

Papilio thoas! His huge, bright wings help move him along quickly. He’s always on the go! He’s friendly and loves talking to other bugs, spiders and all sorts of other animals!

He really just tries to have fun and be friendly, and for some reason other predator animals never even attempt to eat him or anybody that’s with him. That’s all fine with him, being able to fly with no cares is the greatest!

“Time to go go!!” He yells happily. He often times picks up other creatures (even those that are 1000x his size) and has them fly with him in his arms. He’s incredibly strong, and so are his wings.

His favorite nectar comes from sunflowers and he loves any and all types of fruit! Usually drawn to apples because they’re really sweet!

Todomatsu:

Greta oto! His wings are transparent, with pink tips on the bottom. He looks incredibly delicate, but is really tough and can fly for miles!

He does a ton of self-care, just so his wings are always clean and pretty. If anyone purposefully gets them dirty and ruins the glassy appearance of them, he doesn’t hesitate and ruins their life (bribing others to steal food from the said insect and as well as just tormenting the insect).

“Now you’ll see the second side of the mirror,” he’d growl, glaring at the perpetrator. They’d probably laugh- what could such a fragile looking butterfly do? Well, they’d better be prepared.

Mostly drinks the nectar of Lantana flowers and Forget-me-nots. Will indulge in fruits and usually goes for strawberries.
