YES. Found a gif of this, finally!! This is one of my favorite Hermann moments in the first movie.

This is what totally gives him away. Even a casual viewer can’t walk away from this shot without realizing that he cares for Newt. He didn’t shoot down Newt’s drift hypothesis to be mean. He didn’t say “impossible” just to embarrass him in front of the Marshall. He did it because he knew the risk was too great, and Newt’s mind too valuable. It’s not something he wanted to be right about, but even more, he didn’t want to see it tested.

And here he’s seeing his worst projections play out, and it’s awful. 

(Also, it’s his fault. Newt said it himself. But he probably meant it differently than how Hermann felt it. Hermann should have kept a closer eye on him. After all those years he should have known that a lack of resources, and a verbal admonishment alone wouldn’t be enough to keep Newt from trying something so interesting.)

As I’ve said before: Newt must be a terrifying person to love.

as much as i dislike Newt's changed personality in Uprising there's something poetic about the fact that Newt left what makes him Newt behind and Hermann kept it, the new messines of his workspace, the kaiju toys... Hermann is closer to what makes Newt himself in Uprising than Newt is. I just like the idea that whatever is left of him in hermann after the drift might be the only thing left of real Newt at all

Shoutout to Pacific Rim for having the two Most Autistic Guys ever who are both simultaneously utter geniuses and complete morons and also more than a little insane and they bicker like a married couple, but ultimately they are drift compatible and they save the world through fucked up, incredibly ill-advised science. But also they still have to interrupt saving the world to say "I WAS RIGHT". Because they're scientists.

pacific rim fucks severely for a lot of reasons but my favorite is that it opens with "the lizard aliens are unionizing so we built robots running on the power of love to fight them you got all that right" and before you have time to really process that concept bam gunshot body on the floor and the movie goes "now consider the vast power of grief in this setup" it never really stops considering

It also has a scene where the robot uses a boat as a baseball bat. That also fucks tremendously.
