he doesn't tell maría he knows beatriz and vada in his own right, had the former in his car more times than he'd like to admit. could possibly end up with her in the backseat later, too, since he'd already nominated himself designated driver for anyone who'll need it. and, to be fair, he doesn't know about the history between them; it's never been his place to ask and it's not the sort of gossip that gets brought to his chair. he can agree, though, "that is pretty disappointing. a shame for the other members of the band that didn't get to go solo." it might've been their choice, but the way maría presents it, it doesn't seem as such. he realises he doesn't even know if this is about beatriz or vada, figures the latter especially would be all for it if it brings extra heads to their crowd. because his next point is, "maybe they didn't want that kind of buzz for their performance, though. it could overshadow the actual music and their artistry." which seems like a fair point to make, even if he knows maría will hate to hear it. he doesn't answer her question, assumes it's rhetorical, because it's fairly obvious he isn't a 'get up in front of everyone' kind of guy. instead, he shrugs along with her, runs a hand through his hair, remembers he needs a trim. "you know, trying to even the score never feels good for long." it actually tends to feel worse in the long run. at least in his minimal experience. "I'm not saying that! I'm not saying it's not true, I'm just also not saying that it is. I think. anyway, point is, he could've had plenty of different motives. sometimes you have to think outside the box."
