“Yeah, peachy. Shouldn’t you be wherever the hell Kat is?”
“She’s tied up this weekend so I figured I would stick around here for a while.”
“I don’t have a lot of leisure time. I work a lot.”
“What is there to do for, as you’ve put it, a girl like me?”
“Well if you get a day off there’s museums, parks, and I mean...it depends on what you’re into.”
“Aw, Othello, don’t play it like that. I know you missed me.”
“Right, I won’t lie anymore. In all seriousness, you doing better?”
“Alternatively, as one who is responsible for her protection and thus the one person who is in her presence at all times, you could inform me as to where in the building she is and why exactly she’s otherwise occupied when we had arranged to meet at this time on this day.”
“She’s held up in her office, Salvatore. Said she had a meeting of some sort and she’s booked for the weekend. Don’t know why she would tell you that when she had prior arrangements.”
“I’m just a few blocks, but you’re more than welcome to join me.”
“Lead the way. So, what’s a girl like you like to do in Rome anyway?”
“They do, don’t they? How reassuring. I’ll definitely need something to accentuate how competent I am – or would like to seem to at least. Classic black… that sounds like it makes a lot of sense. That’s what I get for never having a job interview for a real adult job before. Um, I was going to try to get like, an assistant teacher position or something at Sapienza. A philosophy major doesn’t exactly come with a plethora of job qualifications I’m afraid, hence the lack of a real adult job at 27.”
“If you keep your attitude right it shouldn’t be too difficult. We all got to start somewhere right? You just haven’t found the right one, but hey hopefully the teaching works out for you. Can’t say I know a damn thing about philosophy myself, but I can keep my ears out and see if I hear anything in that department. “
“You’re right; that would have been a disaster.”
“You live far? I could walk with you to make sure you get there safe.”
“This is not a good time. What do you want?”
“You seem jumpy so I was going to ask if you were alright.”
irenabrodeur:
“You are more than welcome to show how dumb you are by assuming anything about me. Especially if you think it’s an act. Get out of my face and you only get told that once. I’m always doing my job and why don’t you do yours and keep your damn mouth shut since you’re paid to guard not mouth off with your little tantrum.”
“Going to put those skills to good use? I’m doubting it. Go about your business and I’ll go about mine. Pretty sure I could lie about it later and say you were a threat. It’s a win win in my book.”
“Oh, thank you! I must have left my bag open. How silly of me.”
“No problem. Would have hated for you to get home and have yourself locked out because of it.”
“Othello Barsetti. I saw you dropped your keys, ma’am.”
“It’s awfully nice to meet you. And you are…?”
“Othello Barsetti. I saw you dropped your keys, ma’am.”
“It was actually just supposed to be a compliment. Sorry.”
“I’m sorry but that has to be the worst chat up line that I have ever heard. Actually, wait a moment. I’m not and that is the worse chat up line I’ve ever heard”
“It was actually just supposed to be a compliment. Sorry.”
“How about you mind yourself and stop throwing your little hissy fit in my direction?”
“How about you take your tough girl act somewhere else, Irena? Not everyone is buying that crap. Don’t you have your own job to be doing?”
“That’s a good way to go about it. I tend to just not wear mine ever as long as it can be avoided so I thought ‘hey, maybe it’s just because you don’t have the tie’ but by now, I’m doubting myself more than ever. Basically, a classic, I guess? Something that screams ‘I’m a qualified professional, feel free to hire me’? Which turned out to be harder to find than expected thus far.”
“A lack of confidence can cost you a job too man. They sense that shit. I would go for a classic black. Some of them got them dark gray lines so there barely noticeable, but it’s a neutral look. What kind of job were you looking for? I could keep an eye out maybe.”
“It’s fine. As long as I can get this done now.” The brunette offered him a curt smile. She was already behind schedule, the last thing she needed was to argue about cups with more than one person this morning. Regardless, her sense for compassion forbade her to simply grab the cup and turn on her heels. “You should try to ignore them, especially in the morning. People here can get a little… well… annoying. It must be in their nature. Are they bothering you on the regular?”
“Go ahead. It’s no use to me. Not that often but enough to become an issue. Guess I got a low tolerance for people’s bullshit these days. It’s not just the Revs. They’ve been good to me so far. It’s just that constant questions that get on my nerves and no one understands its a risk to fly off the handle and tell everyone every detail.”
