Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea
The Gordian Knot, is a term commonly used to describe a complex or unsolvable problem. It can even be traced back to a legendary chapter in the life of Alexander the Great. In 333 BC the Macedonian conqueror marched his army into the Phrygian capital of Gordium in modern day Turkey. Upon arriving in the city, he encountered an ancient wagon, its yoke tied with several large knots all so tightly entangled that it seemed impossible to unfasten. Phrygian tradition held that any man who could unravel its elaborate workings was destined to become ruler of all Asia. After a time spent in deep thought, Alexander stepped back from the tangled mass, drew his sword and sliced the knot in half with a single stroke. True to the prophecy, Alexander went on to conquer the vast and powerful Persian Empire and crossed the borders of India before his untimely death at age 32.
