here’s the truth about textbooks
i keep seeing posts out there saying that you need to read the textbook to succeed in class. NO. you do not need to read the textbook. at least not for many, if not most, of your classes. first of all, it’s impractical. profs can assign up to 2-3 a week, and if you’re taking around 4-5 classes, that’s a WHOLE LOT of reading. if you have time to do so, go ahead, but a lot of students don’t have that much time on their hands. so i’m suggesting that you DON’T need to read every single chapter your prof assigns. what you DO need to do is to get smarter at selecting what and when to read, as well as scanning the text effectively.
when TO read the textbook
when your profs tell you that they will not be teaching from the textbook but that the exams will cover material and/or questions from the textbook
when the material is difficult, tricky, or lengthy and you need clarification, further explanation, or examples
when you miss a class
when you HAVE TIME to prepare for lectures in advance
when you feel that you actually learn and retain information better by reading the textbook
when NOT to read the textbook
when your profs teach from the textbook pretty much line by line
when your profs tell you that they will not be assessing you based on information from the text, but from their lectures
a strong implication of this is if your profs require lecture attendance
when you feel that reading the textbook does not help you learn or retain information
when you are constantly confused by the textbook (esp when it comes to calculation-based stem classes like math or cs)
when you have absolutely no time whatsoever to read pages after pages of bad academic puns
what you can do INSTEAD of reading the textbook
look at the course syllabus/schedule to see what you will learn in lecture. have an idea of what material you’ll be covering, then do the following steps.
check the course website/resources and ask yourself: what do you have to work with? are there lecture slides? lecture notes from previous semesters? online links or readings?
if one of the above exists, read the lecture slides/notes. they are usually much less text-intensive and get straight to the point. you can zip through them pretty quickly. you will at least have a basic understanding of the material that will be introduced in class.
google terms and concepts that you don’t understand from just reading the lecture slides. again, the idea is to get you to have a basic understanding of the material and not become an expert. this will help you avoid getting lost during the lecture.
if you’re still a little confused, read selected sections from the textbook that deal with the topic you need more help with. please don’t read the entire thing.
if there are no lecture slides or external resources to help you out, scan the textbook effectively.
how to SCAN textbooks effectively
read the chapter title and section headings
read the highlighted, bolded, or italicized terms and concepts, as well as their respective definitions in the content itself, the margins, and/or the index at the back
google the terms and concepts if you’re still confused
examine any charts, graphs, or flowcharts
examples and example questions can be helpful, so pay attention to those
at the end of each chapter there should be a brief summary or main idea section. read those and do the practical problems if possible.
Okay. So #studyblrs get real isn’t trying to offend anyone. I’ve gotten some anon messages that are really rude and I’ve just straight up deleted them.
#studyblrs get real is just that, we’re getting real. I’ve rewritten my notes to be aesthetically pleasing one time. Uno. Ein. Yeah that’s the only languages I know one in.
The studyblr aesthetic isn’t most people’s real life studies methods. It’s some people’s, and I want to congratulate those who manage to keep the aesthetic up.
But honestly, it’s not real life. Real life is being up at 2 AM, surrounded by four empty cups, Rice Krispies Treat wrappers, and a pizza box with just pizza crust in it, and grease marks on your paper. Real life is not having time to make these AMAZING and GORGEOUS notes, because you’re studying for the grade, NOT the notes.
People say you just need to “study” to be a studyblr, but why is it only the MUJIs, the Mildliners, and the Staedtlers get reblogged? Why doesn’t the pictures of sloppy, coffee stained notes get reblogged? The rain drenched crinkled notes that don’t get rewritten. The notes with more scribbles than legible writing.
Underneath is why I think that #studyblrs get real needs to become popular, and fast, which has been taken from what I said in a conversation with @universi-tea where the idea for #studyblrs get real came up.
Teens that are growing up may not know what they’re facing, because aesthetic studyblr makes it look like sunshine and lollipops.
“I’ve been through things that will commonly happen. I’ve been rejected by my dream school, and I’ve cried at 4 AM in the morning because my fourth SAT scores weren’t high enough to meet requirements after months of studying. I’ve taken AP classes. I’ve graduated.
Your high school/college/university experience may have been different, but mine was a rude awakening and I’m trying to prevent others from crashing and burning like I did. I was an all A student in high school, even with AP classes. I graduated fifth in my class with 25 credits from AP scores, in which my school only offered seven AP classes.
My first test in uni was a 38 in Business Calculus. A fucking 38 out of 100. I remember it very vividly (Thursday night, and the Blacklist was on.) It was like someone was trying play a joke on me because I had NEVER gotten that low of a test grade before. I remember looking at my scores, and the sense of dread settling into the pit of my stomach. I cried, and then called my old AP Bio teacher (idk why now that I think about it) I had a panic attack, and I was by myself (lived alone.) Those two are very dangerous. My next test score was a 51. Rinse, and repeat.
Do you know how worthless I felt? How long my mom yelled at me after I called her? How my friends reacted when they found out? I went and had a four hour conversation with the professor, who told me that this was the most common thing he saw in a class with freshmen in it. That they come thinking that they’re prepared and they are by no means prepared. I had to go to tutoring. For every single class but one. This was so fucking embarrassing. I had gone from the tutor in HS to the tutored in Uni.
My best friend went to the North Carolina School of Math and Science. Extremely prestigious, and extremely hard. “It’s like taking uni classes when you’re 16, 17, and 18, but you don’t get credit for them as college classes.” I’ve known my best friend since I was 10-ish. She’s the most level headed, and the smartest person I know. She calls me frequently, crying, because the work load. She spent a whole week with me trying to get over one failing grade.
This embarrassment, this shame and lack of self worth I experienced in uni is something I NEVER want ANYONE to experience. I’m trying to prevent these people younger than I am from feeling this way, because I had sunk into a depression because of grades. Grades that could’ve been prevented, had I known the truth.
Sure, the studyblr aesthetic may work in some people’s lives, but in college/uni, you’re being pulled in so many directions. I don’t know of a single person in any of my classes that have gorgeous notes. Hell, I don’t know anyone who can even afford to buy nice planners, or buy fresh fruit. Being “a broke college student” is entirely legit.
But all this aside, if you’ve managed to live out the studyblr aesthetic in university and keep up your grades, you better be DAMN proud of yourself. I’m not trying to make anyone mad. This is the reality most of us experience. It’s the honest truth, and I had to find out the hard way. I just don’t want anyone else to find out the hard way, either.“
For a project
ALRIGHT ALRIGHT, before you start leaving mean comments - don’t be a hater. Be a conqueror. No admission fees, just a hearty commitment. Join today! (Someone sponsor me, lmao) - hear me out. I know it’s not summer yet since we still haven’t started experiencing the 38-40 °C kinda hellfire yet. (For you folks up there in the north, that’s around an unthinkable 105 °F.)
But to be honest, I don’t think anyone is that excited for summer as I am. I mean, you get two months off from school and the sweet freedom to do whatever the heck you want? Free to party all night, get drunk on the hype and be outside all day? I’ll take it!
So! With that as my excuse, here’s the first summer post of 2018. (Of course, there are more to come. Summer is life.) If you’re ready to join the summer madness, grab this bucket list and get ready (entering, lame joke) to make memories - not just sand castles. *plays recorded laugh track, she’s desperate to be funny*
Go to a concert/music festival. (Screaming Coachella! Basic hoes only!)
Trek up the hills with your friends! Or your dog!
Give Aunt Mary (aka the friends and family you forgot existed) a call for a grannie picnic.
Find new things to do and get them done. For instance, take up a new hobby like photography or sign up for an educational course (knowledge is power, son) on a topic that sparks your interest, say astronomy. You can even learn how to swim (summer is legit exploding with swimming classes and clubs, lol). There’s so much to do, honestly! Here are some more ideas.
Feel the sunshine on thou toes.
Live on the beach. (Take it literally if you like, grab those pillows and yo’ teddy and take over the beach.)
For the house snobs like me, build a fort with those bedsheets and have a summer movie marathon. Don’t forget the butter popcorn!
Volunteer, or if you’re broke and in need of the cold hard cash, get a summer job. Like, sorry, but can’t forget the classic ‘sell lemonade/have a cookie sale’.
Bend down to smell the flowers growing on the sidewalks. Yes.
Go for longs walks in nature, or try gardening. Here’s 10 reason why you need to start a plant family, via my fave gal, Kalyn.
IMPORTANT: get your summer assignments done as fast as you can. This way, you free up a lot of time to spend on other projects than just doing boring schoolwork that Miss Honey assigned.
Catch up on TV shows, YouTube videos and movies!!
Try making these awesome five ingredient smoothies, because food = life.
Learn to cook 10 meals from scratch. Or, if you like a good ol’ challenge, go baking! Bonus, you now have so much to eat. I’m so jelly.
Make a vision board because you gotta keep reminding yourself of your goals, yes, even while you’re partying. More on vision boards here.
Make your own rap song. It’s fun, I promise. Especially if you can’t actually rap.
Create your own summer bucket list! It’s fun to do fun things, you see.
Do something out of your comfort zone every single day. Literally, create a habit tracker for this thing. Even if they are small things like saying hi to a person you normally wouldn’t or complimenting a person, it counts. Do something uncomfortable every day.
Make a long badass summer playlist!! (Here’s my SoundCloud account for good music and good times.)
Clean the crap out of your room/apartment before break ends (want to take on this challenge officially?)
Adopt small good habits all throughout summer (here’s a list).
If you have one, revamp your blog - spice up that theme, change up your posting schedule, or collaborate with different creators!
Drink enough water. We don’t want you dying on us.
Learn about nutrition. Ideas include learning about veganism, or learning how to meal prep. Health is important!
Give yourself one-week mini challenges to conquer. For instance, don’t consume added sugar for a week or decide to read 4 books in just one week. Improve yourself, bud.
Take care of your skin, don’t shed it like a snake this time, lmao. (Read about skin care basics here.)
Put!! On!! That!! Sunscreen!! Prevents skin cancer, hon, it’s a thing.
Read a lot of books! My goal is to hit 15 this time.
Grind it hard in everything you do, every single day. Become unstoppable. Become a conqueror.
If you can afford it, travel to different places you want to see! And, if you can’t, don’t worry - make your future travel bucket list. (+ start saving up!)
Try out outdoor activities like gardening or horse riding. Get yo’ vitamin D, my people!
Get hooked on a good podcast! Check out these recs from the brilliant @eintsein whose work is goals and who inspires me legit all the time.
Get rekt. For my under 21 folk, with whom I sympathize ‘cause same, hang out with your friends and pretend to get drunk, because life shouldn’t be sober all the time.
Catch the bus to the nearest city and spend a day exploring the place, discovering cafes and taking selfies (we so basic, ha).
Redecorate your room for summer. Ditch those wintery fairy lights and get a neon signboard that says, ‘Let’s go, bitch’ for that’s mood™.
Finish writing them notes for the subjects you haven’t yet (these are usually those which you hate, and I feel you).
Check and recheck your school’s network to make sure you didn’t get those annoying surprise assignments from Miss Honey.
On the last day of break, host a private dance party where the only invited member is you. This is the actual definition of fun, I promise.
Learn a language! You have Duolingo, Memrise and other such language apps to help you with your goals.
Read some jokes. Stalk some meme blogs. Watch a horror gameplay. Laugh and let go a bit.
You still with me? Here’s 40! This one is fun - eat lots of ice cream! After all, that’s what summer is for, amirite?
Ooh let’s not miss this one - take lots and lots of naps! Getting enough sleep is nice. Your body will thank you.
Take photographs and make plenty of videos. Make memories!
Have a fun do-no-work day! Here’s a list of fun things to do alone to get you started.
Play games. No, not Fortnite or Outlast, play actual games. Like a normal human. Here are some ideas: A tie-dye t-shirt contest. Darts. Chess. A slip and slide. Drip drench. There’s so much!
Going to sound pretty old fashioned, but build a Time Capsule! Trust me, it’s fun to have things that you can look upon later in life.
Summer is usually the best time to up your running skills. So, sign up for a 5k or a mud run!
Visit ‘x’ new places this summer. This can literally be a new cafe, or a museum you didn’t notice before, or a cosy library around the corner!
Head to free concerts or outdoor events being offered in your town, because we broke and we proud.
Go stargazing on a warm summer night. If you’re like me, this will make you super happy - so do it!
And here’s a bonus one: Go conquer. Every day! Do we have a deal?

Is the Studyblr Community still active?
I just went through and unfollowed everyone who has not posted in months or years (!) and noticed just how many studyblrs had gone inactive! My heart was so heavy to see some names I used to love be inactive for 6 months, 10 months, a year.
If you are still active on studyblr, reblog or like this! I would love to follow some new quality blogs and hope that some people check me out as welllll

Hello hi yes I am organising a new 24 hour Read-a-Thon this Sunday! 😊
What is this, you ask? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds! A whole day dedicated to reading! The idea is to get through as many pages/books as you can. Obviously, you’re allowed to do other things and you’re not chained to your books during this day, but, like I said, it’s a day meant to push us to try and read a bit more, or strive to finish that book we’ve been struggling with 😊
This read-a-thon will start on Sunday, January 14th, at 12 am and will last for the entire day. I haven’t set a time zone, everyone is free to follow their own time zones; otherwise I’d have been too much of a hassle 😂
I would love to hear from you guys through out this read-a-thon: * post pictures * make text posts and keep us all updated on your progress * prior to the start, make a post detailing your goal(s) for the read-a-thon (like I said before, it can be as ambitious as you want, but however much you end up reading, it’s still an accomplishment) * use the tag #read4aday to keep track of everyone’s posts and list your own
I hope to see a lot of you participate in this 😊 Let’s get some reading done!
Mary 🍪 💖
P.S. Hella cool to reblog this 😙
New Year’s Resolutions
I made my New Year's Resolutions sort of correspond with the "Level 10 Life" concept, where you take 10 areas of your life and rate how happy you are with them, then try to improve on that. What I did was I took 10 areas and made at least one goal for each area! So without further ado, here are my goals:
Big Overarching Goal - Complete at least 4 of the smaller goals in 2018
Family and Friends - Contact close and extended family on a monthly basis
Personal Development - Become more involved with my campus Student Game Developer Alliance
Spirituality - Get more involved with church on campus and on holidays
Finances - Maintain the budget set for me by my allowance and income
College - Maintain my scholarship and actually read my textbooks
Relationship - Get into couple's counseling with my significant other, try to have date nights once a month
Fun and Recreation - Do one thing a week that makes me smile
Service - Donate at least one knitting project a month to church or charity
Physical Environment - Clean on a weekly and monthly basis
Health and Fitness - Reduce my weight to 175 by March 31 by exercising 3x a week.
The plan is to pick 4 by the start of January to really focus on, and the rest will just be extra.

!! This app is a studyblr must!! It’s another productivity-timing app, but it has all the features I’ve been looking for: 1. Like Forest for android or FocusNow or iPhone, it’s an app that prevents you from playing with your phone while you study…….. Except here’s the thing: the counter only goes when the phone is facing down so it removes all temptations of even lifting up your phone
2. Themes: this app has the feature called themes, so you can measure how much time was spent on each activity. the theme is also 100% customizable. I set each theme as the name of the course I’m taking this semester so I can see if I’m lagging behind on any of the subjects
3. Weekly goals: need to spend about 20 hours on physics this week? You can se the weekly goal on the settings (again, by theme).
I’ve just been introduced to this and I already love it! The name is “Focus Timer: beyond pomodoro” and it’s on the AppStore! I’m not sure about the playstore though. But for my friends who use an iPhone or iPad, this is such a great app!
Happy studying, everyone!

The “Things I Did Well Today” Challenge
Hey everyone! My mentor started doing this awesome challenge on Instagram. Every day she posts about anything productive she does, from getting out of bed to submitting an important paper.
My goal is to bring this challenge here to studyblr (if it isn’t here already). This challenge is similar to the 100 days of productivity, but you can choose our own times to post - for 30 days, 100, every other day, or even forever, if you’re up for it. Make it your own unique challenge!
With this challenge, there’s no pressure to be perfect or look like the perfect studyblr account. The focus is less on productivity, and more on what makes you proud of yourself If getting dressed is something you did well, make a post about it! If you finished a project, post about it! If you did anything that makes you proud, include it!
While you’re at it, tag your post with #things i did well today or #tidwt
Good luck!
Hey guys :) I’m Bea, from Exohypernova.

A-Z Book Recommendations.
What a great idea from my friend at @macrolit :) Had to give it a go. I’ve omitted “A’s” and “The’s” from most of the titles for sake of flow.
A - American Gods by Neil Gaiman - A wandering modern “fantasy” that felt keenly poignant to me having grown up in the midwest. You’ll need patience for this one but this book is truly about the journey not the destination.
B - Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer - I’ll be honest, I never finished this series. It got a little overblown but the characters are so genuine that I held out a lot longer than I would expect of myself. This first book though is the definition of a classic middle reader. Lot of Adventure and a lovable, fierce, albeit flawed, female protagonist.
C - Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess - I used to read this book every summer. It’s a rough read with some explicit violence (sexual and otherwise) but an important one I think. I recommend reading the “British” publishing which has 21 chapters (the publishers took out the last one for American audiences, because apparently we don’t like character redemption and growth *eyeroll*). The real genius of this book is the vernacular Burgess created from scratch that is truly like reading another language at first.
D - Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab - Not to be cliche but I find that a lot of the titles Booklr obsesses over in the YA genre to be par-baked at best. Not the case with this series! Well developed characters that exist beyond their actions and exhibit real emotional complexity without relying on tropes and a plot that kept me turning and turning pages!
This list is *amazing*! So much work put into it! Great job. :D
