one of the ways canon rotates chicken-style in my head is trying to reconcile the worst plot routes with stuff established before in an attempt to make it make sense.
On an unrelated note, here's how I've been reconciling Maki's tragic fate since the end of the main jjk run:
Yuuta (too strong at too young an age) had a major absolute-power-corrupts-absolutely arc through adulthood and became the thing he sought to destroy.
Maki stands by him out of grief and because the proximity is the only way to still push for change right under his nose.
Yuuta knows this but it's what's keeping her holding his hand so he doesn't so anything to change that
Maki was among the few who even noticed Yuuta's corruption. Yuuta operated in a way that suited how traditional jjk society traditionally functioned since generations. No one batted an eye when Yuuta continued that style of society
Except for Gojo's students, who recognised Yuuta losing his way despite doing so in Gojo's name
And except for Geto's followers, who saw his corruption as a pale shadow of the world promised by their leader
But none of them were as geared for politics as they were to fight with their fists. Yuuta, unfortunately, was adept at both.
They try. Hard. Multiple times. And fail.
Corrupted!Yuuta wasn't corrupt enough to make Maki further another established clan. The twins' parents were adopted from close Okkotsu relatives.
Time, old age, and the impending and subsequent loss of Maki and fellow peers finally leads Yuuta to finally realise what he's done. The teeming regret and inability to undo what he's done manifests in his need to spend more time with the grandkids
