Bust of Commodus presenting himself as Hercules, sculpted in the last year of his reign (192). On the sides were the two Amazons defeated by Hercules: one is lost and the other lost its head and arms, but the rest of the work is extraordinarily preserved. In its left hand holds the golden apples, which only the gods could eat, which Hercules took from the garden of the Hesperides. Despite having had an infamous reign, this bust, an eternal reminder of his megalomania and madness, was saved from being destroyed because Septimius Severus, who became emperor in 193 after the civil war that followed the assassination of Commodus, deified him only to align with the prestigious Antonine dynasty (rather the Ulpia-Aelia dynasty, since the name 'Antonine' was created in the 18th century) This wonderful marble work was found along with other sculptures in an underground chamber beneath the Lamia Gardens, Piazza Vittorio in Rome in the 19th century.
