Burn The Wicker Man

A British staple that isn’t the Queen, fish & chips or a red double decker bus: It’s the wicker hanging basket. Okay, so it’s nowhere near as famous as the former and not exactly quintessentially English but this classic decoration is one which is held in high-esteem by many of us. We want to know, when does classic become overdone?

This garden feature has been popular ever since I can remember. Found in most people's gardens - I’d be lying if I said we didn’t have one at our home (left by the previous owners might I add!) - It is a decoration which gives both height and colour.  Although it is a common sight in our gardens, I want to know, when will we move with the times? When will we free ourselves from the all too common wicker tones and fibrous browns which inhabit our eye-level?

In my personal opinion it is not the baskets themselves which are the problem, it’s the fact that we’re scared to try something new! Decoration of the eye-level that we so easily fill with wicker baskets can be done in so many other ways.

Water features are certainly another great way to fill a space on your wall. The one pictured is a lionhead water feature (£110) which wouldn't look out of place in the quaintest of quaint places e.g. your typical British cottage wall. These water features are brilliant and you could even go for a taller more modern water feature placed next to the wall, rather than mounted on it.

Garden art is a simple way to have your favourite photograph or image made into outdoor ready art. This is one of the best ways to create colour as you select the image so whatever you have printed is up to you. These range from a square 52 x 52cm (£39.95) to the large polyptych - made up of four 92 x 41cm panels - pictured above (£110). Any wall hanging ornament would be a nice way to create a certain "je ne sais qua" and "voulez vous coucher avec moi" in your garden... oui? In all seriousness though, garden ornaments come in all shapes and sizes and can be anything from a wall clock to a simple but expansive (not expensive) outdoor mirror. The right ornament can add flair and height to your outer space.

We've saved the best for last; the final alternative to the hanging basket is the amazing wall garden (pictured furthest to the right). These are a bit of a big thing at the moment with space saving on the rise as well as people's desire for greenery wherever they are. There are some amazing images out there of houses and buildings covered in the things. Not only are the a fantastic invention they're also as beautiful and as colourful as you want them to be. Fashion in Furniture

This is just an amazing location with amazing photography. One of the many reasons why we love Cane-line.

Their furniture is elegant and outspoken but still retains style, class and functionality. It is the amazing companies like cane-line who are striving to create furniture which is of brilliant quality with design to match.

We are continuously seeing interior (or exterior!) trends and clothing trends align. Cane-line are a brilliant example of that and when we compare their designs to some of the fashion which has been around in 2013 we can really see the subtle exchanges in aesthetics. Another brilliant example of this is Orla Kiely. Her iconic pattern is now worn everywhere, on handbags, purses, wallpapers, homeware and even gardening tools!         

It just goes to show how the two can often marry into each other. This creates unison with what someone might don out on the town and simultaneously use to decorate their living room. After all, people often see what a person wears as a reflection of their home, so why not give a sneaky glimpse in once in a while? E.I

So with Winter drawing to a slow but inevitable close (or so we hope!) we've got some cool changes coming to Outerspace: 

We're increasing our online presence, firstly by offering all of our furniture online as well as some other cool stuff such as hammocks and jewellery. This will be happening over the next few months as we go through the long process of uploading everything. Fear not though, it'll soon be up!  

We've started work on a cafe (ooooooh!) at our Francis Street shop. So, if you're in Leicestershire and fancy a cup of tea and a browse then you know where we are.  

Our summer stock is all on it's way in. A steady process but an amazingly rewarding one. We'll have some fantastic bits and bobs for you to enjoy - we can't wait!
