He values all of his family. He always has. Yet, there are ones who feel more elusive to him. Andy has always been Andy and he learns to not take offense. Booker’s betrayal had hurt but he had sympathetically understood the loneliness the other might be plagued with when he considers what he might be like if not for Joe’s early arrival. Nile, although newer to their ranks, was bright and open―reminding him vividly of Joe at times. They expressed their thoughts and emotions so freely. They were open books. And Ace? Ace probably fell into the category between Andy and Booker. Mysterious at times. Distant among others. But Nicky understood they had their reasons as well. Living this long did not come without it’s own trials and tribulations. Despite his often brooding and thorough observations of those around him, it does make him wonder how he is perceived by the others. Whereas Joe might burn with his affection for his loved ones, Nicky’s quiet appreciation and protectiveness was there. On a low simmer but no less there. He finally smiles, ❝ Morning. Want coffee? ❞

Slow moving mornings where, to their comfort, always welcomed with the family. Days that they could gather thoughts and emotions after a particularly hard mission was always going to be the best parts of this for them. It had taken them too long to learn this lesson, to slow down and accept that not everything must go at Mach speed but there are times when a person can just sit and read a book in silence without thinking of their next move. Only for Ace, the book was always a local newspaper just to keep up with things in the world. 

Hearing him enter, green eyes lift from words to face with a smile for him. If they had to pick a favorite, secretly it would be Nicky. His fierceness and his loyalty were always something that Ace admired of the old Crusader and just the way his face changes when looking at Joe- well it’s something beautiful and the old warrior can’t help but stare when it happens. 

“Coffee, please.” They weren’t sure how long they’d been awake, sneaking out early in the morning dusk to steal the paper before anyone else awoke. Out of all of them, Ace might be the one who slept the least (or Andy, the debate was open for it). “You hungry?” They’d managed to find a little farm stand just opened for the day and grabbed some basics for a meal: eggs, ham, and bread. “It’s not much.” But at least none would die of hunger. A smirk at their private joke. “The others should be up soon.” Pause. When’s the last time just Nicky and Ace had sat and talked, bonded just the pair of them? Blinking at this realization, they stand to join him in the kitchen as the smell of coffee begins to float in the air. “How are you doing?”

ace clearly does not have the same exact moral compass as the rest of the guard. they’re very open about this as well and make it clear to both allies and enemies alike. while most of the guard does things they do for the greater good or the saving of humanity, ace is not ashamed to take assassination contracts or dirty dealings should it benefit them or the guard. 

they believe in the greater good and have no issues doing the less than moral or wonderful things to achieve the ends. the ends justify the means is something ace believes in wholly. they do not view themself as a hero or savior of the people but someone who is simply willing to do anything they can for family (and sometimes money).

there’s a distinct kind of sigh that comes from ace as shelby talks. maybe they did want the same things, maybe the pair were on the same path to the same destination but in their mind- well it didn’t matter the end goal because it wouldn’t be happening. “don’t make this harder than it has to be.” the please is unsaid but hangs like a desperate ghost in the conversation. in truth, they just can’t put her into this life without risking her safety and all that makes her good. “i’ve ruined you enough for a lifetime.” a soft smile, a gentle touch on the other’s cheek before they’re taking a step back with a stone look on forever beautiful features. “just let it go, agent wyatt.”
