lesser movies than mamma mia (2008) would've made the central conflict be between the three dads and stoked endless competition and jealousy between them, fighting about who gets to be sophie's "real dad" and who has (and had) a "right" to pursue donna but mamma mia is no such movie. mamma mia is a cinematic masterpiece and as such they are pals throughout, happily go along with all the shenanigans and spend loads of quality time together throughout the film. they are just vibing! and then all three of them become the dads no questions asked. no drama! only vibing in greece

My favourite fact about chess ever is how Garry Kasparov, a Russian grandmaster and former world chess champion, once said during an interview:

"Well, in the past, I have said that there is real chess and women’s chess. Some people don’t like to hear this, but chess does not fit women properly. It’s a fight, you know? A big fight. It’s not for women."

Only for Kasparov to get absolutely obliterated by Judit Polgar, a Hungarian woman, a few years later.

Another fun fact: Judit Polgar, at the time of receiving her grandmaster title in 1991, was the youngest player to EVER receive the title at only age 15. Judit Polgar is straight up a chess legend. She was also the youngest player to ever be inducted into the FIDE top 100, ranking 55 at only age 12.

Judit has defeated numerous other chess legends, such as Anatoly Karpov, Viswanathan Anand, and Boris Spassky, all former world chess champions. She has even won a match against Magnus Carlsen, who is the current world chess champion as of 2021. When I tell you this woman is a beast I mean she is RUTHLESS.

Famously, in 1994, during a match with Judit Polgar, Garry Kasparov cheated, taking back a move after realising it was losing, even though this is very much against the rules of chess. At the time, Judit was only 17. Imagine being so good at age 17 that you make the world champion cheat!

This is probably why Cats was a CGI nightmare. Rather than higher a costume designer to re-imagine the leggings and fur hats for a modern audience. Which would have required hiring union work people to make the hundreds of costumes they'd have needed they just CGI ed some cat fur onto their actors.

Did the CGI team do their best and give it their all, probably. But they shouldn't have been hired. They shouldn't have been put in a position of making costumes and worlds and extras, and, and, and. They should have been hired for what CGI is best at, special effects when physical special effects aren't possible and the rest should've been left to physical craftspeople.

There's nothing wrong with CGI when used sparingly and married with physical effects and costumes to enhance the realness of the world but when you plop some actors in morph suits on a green screen set and just replace everything with CGI your movie sucks.

Compare the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and you'll understand what I mean.

CGI people deserve a union, deserve respect, and deserve not to be treated as an isnta movie factory. They deserve to be allowed to hone their craft and dedicate time and energy to creating the kind of world-building effects we all know and love.

i’m such a small blog but i’m begging y’all to spread this story. i can’t speak directly to this- no matter how hurt and angry and thrown by all of this i am, my voice isn’t the one that matters. i recognize that. but i’m still begging for this to not be overlooked. say her name, remember her- remember that this fight never ended, and keep fighting it.

derek chauvin being found guilty is a victory, but we can’t let that blind us to the fact that this has kept happening and never actually stopped. even if the protests went quiet, that doesn’t mean things changed. we have to hold them accountable and we have to remember those who have died and will continue to die beneath the shadow of everything else that’s happened this year.

my heart is going out to her family.
