Symbolic Mothers Preview:

Where does Rio fit into all of this? She is Shimmer's mother. A child turned parental figure against her will. Not to mention her embryonic and fetal design. She’s squishy, pink, with large bulging eyes and a smooth bulbous head. In Season 1, Episode 6, Singed states that Rio is a rare mutation that he cultivated. Implying that he had experimented with other pixiemanders in the past; until Rio was born with the desired mutation to begin synthesizing Shimmer.

Raising the question, how many other “Rio’s” suffered before her birth? Rio was kept forcibly alive by Singed. Akin to her children, she has zero autonomy. Her milk is the byproduct of her suffering, and her suffering is perpetuated through the circulation of the drug within the undercity. Shimmer users who undergo a physical degradation possess the same skin lesions, bulging purple veins, and discolored limbs present on Rio. They take after her in a physical sense, with her “illness” being passed down to them. She is as much a victim as those affected by Shimmer. As far as we know, Rio is still floating in her tube with her fate left unresolved. While the Shimmer factories may fall to ruin, the source remains out there, waiting to be rediscovered. Let's get into some womb imagery with Rio! fig. 1. The cave Viktor finds her in is a womb nestled within the earth—the birthplace of Shimmer's progenitor. fig. 2. The container she is kept in also has womb-like qualities, as Rio is shown to be in a fetal position, surrounded by liquid, with tubes resembling umbilical cords connecting to her body. It is safe to assume Rio was born in a tube. So, she’s truly returning to her place of origin.
