i take back everything i said. I had a gut feeling sheβd end up winning. I donβt mind beyoncΓ©, but i just donβt think it was that deserved? Donβt get me wrong, sheβs been robbed before, countless times. I just didnβt see that being her best work. As for Billieβs album, it was amazing. And nothing? Oh cmon, 13,000 people. The lyrics, engineering, the discography, all heavenly. Cowboy Carter was a bold move by BeyoncΓ© really, and as a country kid, i tip my hat to her change, didnβt mind it. I thought she deserved country album of the year tbh. Lainey, Kacey and Chrisβs albums werenβt that catchy to me. But what we need to look at is the history of the grammys. It may have a part. Women of color honestly do not get the attention they deserve for album of the year. They have been long overdue. I mean last year, i thought it was SZAβs. (sorry swifties.) It was a solid album. But why has it taken so long? Now looking back, the last time a black female artist won album of the year was none other thanβ¦.
Ms Lauryn Hill. For the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Now, what made it so special? Well friends, what she made was extraordinary (would recommend it a listen.) That album was enough to make grown men cry. It was all perfectly planned out, all of it. The beats, flow, lyrics, the whole damn album was an engineered masterpiece. But what made it catch the eyes of the committee? The impact it had on society. Iβd say it inspired women (especially those of color) to wear their hair natural, have self love, embrace motherhood, and have truth. It redefined hip-hop and r&b. Shortening it, it did a hell of a lot outside of music.
Thatβs the reason i feel the committee awarded it to BeyoncΓ©. The Impact. I do have two questionsβ¦
Did we really feel the impact of this album?
Did this meet the standards that Miseducation made?
Now itβs not right to compare these i know. But when you are giving it for impact, well, thatβs when you can compare. I mean, it was a cool idea, bringing black people back into country music. Country music should be for everyone. Historically, we had black cowboys. The beats for some of her songs were good. I just didnβt feel this album, as opposed to her other ones. To me it sounded like the songs were out of order. It would switch from country twang to beats of hip hop and r&b. It felt out of place to me. But the 13,000 committee members mustβve thought it was good enough, to award such a high award to her.
But iβm just a dumb music enjoyer,
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
