the fog had rolled down wraith's peake hills slowly, markedly sure and without forewarning to any living creature in its path, as it often did. here tulia was, picking off stragglers from the woods before the suffocating blanket tucked them in irretrievably. she peered down upon one such creature from atop her mount, from such an angle as to render her imperious even when her features were schooled to neutrality. perhaps the unsheathed sword helped that image along, too.

no lady's business, they'd said, the business of herding, but an extra pair of hands - skilled, at that - were never amiss in the unnavigable august haze. and stretching one's legs outside the lookout never hurt. beside the flint's scuttly hooves, fire danced her nose along the length of the man's leg; inquisitive. friendlier creatures, it seemed, than their mistress. less mindful of strangers than they ought to.

something to be said about how awful tulia is at naming anything that the animals with the most normal names came with them and it's very, very evident which ones they are - grey winter and sapphire were spared by virtue of being pre-owned. everyone else? the more she likes them the worse the name is. hence, skunk.

here are tulia's beloved dogs! borum manor's chalk full of hounds and mutts, roughly six of which are her favourite. this is not an exhaustive list by all accounts

grey winter ( also called "grey" or "ranger" ) is the dog who's been with her the longest and the one who followed her from her time as a simple soldier. one of lord timothain's more aged kennel dogs and an unofficial gift upon the disbandment of their banners at gumtur river, tulia took him when she left for borgenden. a wolfhound with a robust frame and strong sense of direction, trained to perfection and unwilling to retire, he makes for a helpful, if a touch overenthusiastic hunter

sapphire ( also "captain" ) an old coonhound snatched from a breeder alongside a puppy from her latest and last litter - fire. fire ( also "scout" ) is an unbeaten scent hound, a constant companion to tulia and a hardworking girl often employed for navigation. when off the clock, she's also a rather paranoid guardian to her mistress and anyone in tow. sapphire, similarly, numbers amongst tulia's most disciplined hounds, second only to grey, though armed with a more robust patience. the calmest dog in her bunch and the widely agreed upon ringleader.

skunk is tulia's newest dog. found in the marshes with mud deep-baked into her fur and a pep in her step nevertheless, the hardy mutt followed tulia home for a warm meal and continued returning until she trusted her enough to allow a bath. it was true love ever since. she still rarely allows pampering and maintains a fondness for dirt, but has developed a taste for cuddles and luxuriously soft bedding. materializes out of thin air at the smell of cheese.

egg ( good egg, eggy, peg, pegleg ) is a free-range borum mutt, fed at large by the villages nearby and known as a bit of a local hero. a lame-pawed, yappy little thing, he's a bonafide alarm with a good sense for danger or trouble. common accompaniment to tulia during retrieval runs during fog season. she'll get him to trust her enough for a chin scratch yet!

bullwark ( bull, bully, guard, winnie ) is a fortress mutt and one of the guard dogs of the baroness keep. a friendly girl to all inhabitants but her tolerance for strangers and intruders is next to none. somewhat suspiciously smart and scary for it. staff will often take her along when they have to leave the keep after dusk for chores. she may not be intimidating in size but her technique of just sort of standing there unmovingly works well enough to scare off undesirables. master of psychological manipulation for gluttonous reasons.

   the countess made no great effort to stop the smile that twitched onto her features as she walked ahead of the brave knight.   they passed through a handful of stone archways and hefty doors before they could be greeted by a sight of green blotched with whites and yellows and pinks, the aroma of lilacs and mock oranges tingling through the air.

  “so, our dame tulia is not afraid of bees or weeds,” they reached the bench, at last, with a marble table beneath thick shade, “or pain or death, i’d wager.” nathaira’s eyes did not leave the woman’s face.   there was the clear line of curiosity—and then tension, or simply the sharpness of a ruler which had become second nature.

  it nigh contrasted like silk does on wool, as she reached for one of the biscuits already laid out on a plate.   “what are you afraid of?”

  unlike the rare-sunned, west-facing training grounds, the gardens came upon tulia with a brightness that demanded blinking and a fragrance so ever-pungent she was sure she would forever think of them at the barest whiff of orange. overbearing, always, much like their mistress.

  “ you would lose that wager should you make it, milady. ” tulia said, no longer smilingly. under the bright sun her sweat-sheened brow had ceased drying and her hands, wrapped in sun-faded leather gloves to ward off blisters and damp hilt grip, had dampened further. she stopped a pace's breadth before the bench, customarily, and took to relieving herself of them. matters of the psyche were best conducted dry, cool and at least halfway horizontal. this bore more the likeness of interrogation. it was always dame when they talked thusly..

 “ and you would find the waters in question shallow, should you wade them. ”

whatever fears she did have were markedly mundane, no fodder to pick from for nathaira's amusement today. there was death, mandatorily, then pain and loss as befitted a humane creature, long ago a fear of dogs, dishonor, imprisonment ...andㅤ— the uniform tugging on each glove finger slowed, tulia's already vague air of listening thinned to a casual vacancy and she looked upon the garden landscape, then through it.

  “ i used to be afraid of dogs. ”

upon her left wrist, now bare, sat a mangled semicircle of gnash indents, as emphasis

flint's a very doglike horse. raised around dogs, which explains it. bought at two years old when tulia was still a woman at arms in borgenden, so little filly flint pranced with her horde of hounds long enough to get some 'raised by wolves' mannerisms. much like a dog, she has pretty good recall and sometimes play bites. unlike a dog, sometimes she doesn't have a good gauge on how much bite force to use 😬 oop

and then there's coal who has a red ribbon tied onto his tail because he's a kicker 😇 most stubborn horse tulia's ever met. if it's not an emergency he ain't fuckin doin it.
