The Flash - review of 5a
I might as well issue the disclaimer that I haven't watched for 5 years but I binged earlier in 2018 and season 5 is the only season I've watched weekly from start to finish. So let's get this started with the character rundown review.
BARRY - I think he steps it up most seasons---partially due to him screwing up and timeline and having to learn from his own mistakes by fixing it at the last minute. We've had some amazing West-Allen moments from Iris saving him to trying to figure out the villain of the week to parenting. When Nora revealed that she was a few years old when he disappeared I thought the main things on Barry's mind would be to connect with his daughter, save some time to figure out cicada and use whatever energy he had left to try to find a way to change his fate so he could be there for his daughter and wife. However he doesn't seem like he's that worried about it. Back when they thought Iris would be killed, he was so worried about fixing that scenario because he wanted to alway have the love of his life so why is he not concerned about it when the future is without him? Someone help me out because that blows me. He's had some great father moments with Nora as well but he's cautions because he knows eventually that she's going to have to go back to 2049. I'm glad he defended Iris through their intense moments. Mature Barry is amazing. It just seems to me like he's preparing them for time without him. Like when Iris and Nora after they found out why she was so mad, it seemed like he wanted them to repair their relationship because he wanted them in a good place for when he's not there for them. I hope in 5b he can get to Nora before she messes up- I mean more than she already has due to teaming up with Thawne. Fatherhood has blinded him a bit and I think he needs to think sometimes with his head over his heart because he will need to be on his toes to help his daughter see Thawne for the monster he is.
IRIS - I found myself on Iris' side of the Nora argument, not that I agree completely(more on that later). It was frustrating to see all her efforts rebuffed by Nora at the beginning but I love that they're getting closer now. HOWEVER, I think that she will be hurt the most by Nora working with Thawne because it's like after everything they've done to be in this happy place, you find out that your daughter is working with him after all that he's done to your husband. She's gotten it from all aspects. Barry was manipulated by him, she never was able to truly know her mother-in-law because this monster killed her, Eddie(RIP), and now your daughter is getting manipulated by him. As far as a leader for the team I think she's getting far better and can scope out a lot of things. I want her to get back into her love of journalism in the back half of the season, she needs something to separate her, if only for a minute. Whatever the fallout from this Nora debacle is, I hope they at least are in a good place by the time she leaves. I think I'm worried about what next year's crisis is going to do to the whole family.
Nora - Let me get this out, Nora is 28(she said she was a few years old when Barry disappeared, so I'm assuming she was born in 2020 or 2021). So that'd put her age 28-29 and I just always say 28, I could be wrong but oh well. Anyways, Nora does not act like a woman in her late 20s, she acts like a spoiled brat who had no patience at all. She whines and pouts when she doesn't get her way and she doesn't see things from other people's standpoint. Don't get me wrong, I like her, I just wish she was more mature and acted her age. I think a more mature Nora could benefit the team, more than this version of her that needs a pep talk from a parent or grandparent each time. I'm sure she's trying to stop Barry from disappearing, but she has a lot on her plate - trying to get to know Barry, trying to help them stop Cicada, trying to stop Barry from disappearing in the future, and working with and giving information to thawne. Given the maturity level she's displayed I 100% think she's being manipulated. He probably promised her there was a way to save Barry and she wanted it so bad she didn't care how it happened or why. I don't think she has ill intentions but working with the wrong people can screw everything up. Like when Barry wanted to go back and save his mom - which I feel like she should know this if she cared to ask. Moving right along, in the back half I hope she wises up and realizes she's being manipulated before she ruins something in the long run. Extra: if she says I love you at some point to both Iris and Barry....I..will..cry. like super hard.
Nora and Iris: while I do think that dampening her powers seems cruel, I will say that I lean more towards Iris' side in this argument but I will talk about Nora's side first including some things I'm fuzzy on that I may need you guys to clear up for me if you wants. Nora, it must be hard to go through your whole life normal when you have an extraordinary side. And I felt so bad that she said the part that hurt the most was not finding out from your mom. Here's the thing, Zari(from Legends) is from around the same time as Nora where metahumans aren't safe right? so wouldn't that be a reasonable thing for Iris to think of? After losing her husband/best friend/love of her life, she doesn't want to lose her daughter too. Also, Iris isn't tech savy, she couldn't have made the chip, neither is she a doctor therefore couldn't have inserted the chip. So why is she only mad at Iris for something she couldn't have done alone. What if it was Barry's idea and Iris didn't believe it was a good idea until he disappeared and then she agreed to it, Cisco made it, and Caitlin put it in her. Maybe somehow later she crossed paths with Thawne disguised as Wells and to gain her trust he told her about the chip, so she'd feel alone-since the person closest to her in the world hid that from her- and turns to him for help learning her powers. My main thing is this, we see flashbacks to a young Nora in the flash museum, it's hard for me to believe that she knows she's The Flash's daughter but doesn't suspect she has powers until she's 28. She's had the chip out 6 months and is running back time, time traveling and the team just thinks she figured that out all on her own?
