Joshua’s suckiness being mostly personality by weight even despite having done All That is so great. He’s not even evil or anything he’s just an asshole in general and likes to torment Neku specifically. Like genuinely the rules of his Game make it something ultimately benevolent if obviously shitty and manipulative, what should be for all intents an angel producing machine is something fundamentally kind and human because it centers the second chance, encourages people to connect to each other and find reason to live. His worst crime save Neku is kinda just being apathetic and suicidal in a position of absurd power, but I have absolutely no reason to believe that other Composers are any better, on average. Other than killing one guy (and lowkey saving his life by doing so, paradoxically) he’s just an asshole.

kitaniji and hanekoma choosing shibuya over joshua really is what makes neku choosing joshua over shibuya so perfect.

kitaniji worshipped the composer, but his love for shibuya was slightly stronger than his devotion. he couldn’t betray the composer, but couldn’t sit back and silently abide by his will of destroying the shibuya he loved, so he proposes that Game.

hanekoma cares about joshua, but he’s always been playing on a different level, a higher frequency if you will, and loves shibuya even more than his duty as an angel. so he bets on every hand but joshua’s. kitaniji’s through the red pins to win their Game, minamimoto’s through taboo noise and joshua’s identity in order to kill him, neku’s through urging him to empathize with joshua and change him. like collecting game pieces.

ultimately neku saw josh as a person before any notion of the power he wields as composer. joshua is a really fucking aggravating person who understands him, a friend. so even though neku knew he was dooming shibuya, himself, everyone else he’s ever known, he couldn’t pull the trigger. even having been betrayed, he couldn’t step back to do a cost-benefit analysis. it’s something raw, something real, something familiar. it’s what everyone in shibuya is looking for. connection. love.

But I learned something about myself— how lucky I was. I took each day for granted.

Life for me was one giant bore.

Woke up, went to school, talked to Eri, came home, ate, watched TV. Then conked right out.

It was so… NORMAL. I never thought of it as living.

Now THAT felt like death.

But this week woke me up, made me feel more alive… than I ever did when I really was.

Twewy’s story is so incredibly anti-suicide without the topic ever being mentioned explicitly. It’s a story about a bunch of dead kids who had the most important things in their lives taken from them, who have to choose whether to return to life or ascend beyond it. The city itself is suicidal. The city is you, and the city is Joshua, and the city tries to kill you, but it can’t let go of you, and you live another week.

These tags really hit the nail on the head as to why the game makes you feel like “I want to keep living,” because that feeling is so much stronger than “I want to not die.”

I’m not suicidal, but I do isolate myself from other people more than I would like, and man did this game make me want to live.
