Maybe the reason they change is because they hold back so much before the dam has to give way and break — and they can never rebuild back to the way they were, just to the way they are now. It’s probably a good thing. Oliver’s so stubborn that even he knows he needs to be broken down a few times before he understands how shit of a person he’s being.

( All he can do is thank his lucky goddamn stars that he has people in his life, people he cares about and people that care about him in return — so much that they’re willing to put up with his shit for years and drag him out of his own void. )

“Are you sure?” It’s a promise he can make, but the weight behind it heavier than Felicity knows. He doesn’t want to weigh her down like that.

“Because I was just about to open my mouth before realising how fucking depressing I was about to sound.” It feels ridiculous to laugh, but he can’t help it. It’s not his best defense mechanism, but at least it cuts through some of the tension between them.

soft red lips press into a tight smile before felicity laughs too. it’s not quite forced, but it’s not exactly natural either. “ oliver, when you put any aspect of our lives– of your life– into words, of course it’s gonna sound depressing. what? from lian yu to china to russia– and don’t get me started on everything that’s gone down since you’ve been home, i mean... ”

she wants to understand him, she really does. even just saying this is reminding her of how hard it’ll be to ever truly do that. she’s been told so much of his past yet so little at the same time. she’ll never know what it’s like to have her father sacrifice himself for her or what it’s like to live as a ghost. the big truths have come out when they’re at their lowest. they may not be at their best now, but it’s not rock bottom.
