Masterpost: Canadian Womenâs shelters and resources to donate or volunteer to:
Last month on the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre (in which 14 women in Quebec were murdered because they were women) I decided I wanted to ask my followers for places I could donate to in the future, to support women around issues of violence against women, homelessness, domestic abuse, etc.
This post is a culmination of all the responses I got to that original thread. All these places are based on recommendations. If you think any of them is problematic, let me know. If there are others Iâve missed, let me know. I can update this list in the future.
Especially as the #Metoo and #Timesup movements have emerged, I think its important to support womenâs organizations like these.

Family, friends of Delilah Saunders say '6-month-sobriety' rule is discriminatory
The family of a well known Indigenous rights advocate is considering legal action after she was told she canât access a liver transplant based on a history of alcohol use disorder.
Delilah Saunders was admitted to an Ottawa hospital Friday afternoon and was diagnosed with acute liver failure. She is in critical condition.
She had been taking acetaminophen for jaw pain, friends say, which may have led to liver failure.
âThe doctor said she needs a liver transplant,â says her best friend Rebecca Moore, who travelled from Nova Scotia to be with her.
âThen they said she canât have one.â

Borutski was convicted in Ontarioâs Superior Court by a jury who deliberated for 14 hours.
Basil Borutski has been found guilty of murdering three womenâhis ex-girlfriendsâin a shooting rampage in Wilno, Ontario in 2015.
Borutski, 60, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for shooting to death Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, and Nathalie Warmerdam, 48, and one count of second-degree murder for strangling Carol Culleton, 66 on September 22, 2015.
The murders are one of the worst cases of intimate partner violence in Canadian history.

Actress alleges director-producer 'outed' her with no regard for her well-being
Canadian actress Ellen Page is sharing stories of having suffered sexual harassment and assault at work, including accusing Brett Ratner of making aggressive and inappropriate sexual comments to her and others on the set of X-Men: The Last Stand.
The actress posted a lengthy essay on Facebook (appears below) Friday alleging the director-producer outed her on the set of the blockbuster 2006 film, when she was 18.
âI was a young adult who had not yet come out to myself ⊠He âoutedâ me with no regard for my well-being,â Page writes about her reaction to a lewd, sexually graphic comment Ratner allegedly directed towards her and another woman during a âmeet and greetâ event ahead of filming.
She received support from a co-star of the film: Canadian-born Anna Paquin, who said on Twitter that she âwas there when that comment was made.â

She also discussed Misty Upham and the recent news that Misty was raped by Weinstein execs, and gave credit where it is due to trans women, indigenous women, and woc in building the movement against this violence. This is really well written and I would highly recommend reading it.

And yet, former media baron Conrad Black, a convicted felon in the US for obstruction of justice and mail fraud, continues to get his temporary residency permit to live in Canada renewed year after year. Because heâs rich and used to be a citizen (he gave it up to be a British Lord. yeah, heâs a piece of work)
The pill will be available to women with a valid health card and prescription
The Ontario government says it is giving women in the province more choice over their reproductive health by covering the cost of Mifegymiso, commonly referred to as an abortion pill, starting on Aug.10.
Mifegymiso, also known by the name RU-486, is a two-drug combination of mifepristone and misoprostol that can be used to terminate a pregnancy up to 49 days.
It was approved in July 2015 after a lengthy study by Health Canada. It has slowly become available for distribution in Canada since then.

dear goddess let there be a movie
I AM LIVING
Folks this is a beautiful story but these two women need help. She has NOT found a safe haven in Canada.
Itâs been 10+ years since Elena (the Russian) arrived in Canada. At first she was declared a refugee and was granted asylum. Over the last several years she has been fighting with the Canadian government to become a citizen (as she is the spouse of a Canadian citizen), and has run into about a million bureaucratic and incompetent hurdles, the result of which is that she is now a stranded and stateless person through no fault of her own. Her partner has prepared a press release (http://www.cadenza.ca/index.php/en/news/#pressrelease) that contains the full story. Please read it, and do what you can for them - I donât know of a way to donate to them, but at the very least spread the word. If youâre Canadian, please RAISE HELL about this.
@allthecanadianpolitics Iâm not sure if youâve posed about this already, but in case you havent this seems to be an important addition!
If Morgane Oger is elected in the BC provincial election on May 9th, she will be the first transgender politician elected to any level of government in Canada.
Adding onto this.
Sheâs running in the riding of Vancouver-False Creek:
If you live in Vancouver, within this area, she will be running as the NDP (Centre-left political party) candidate. So youâll be able to vote for her.
If you live nearby and want to help her get elected, volunteer here.
If you live elsewhere, but want to help you can donate to her campaign here.
Bringing this post back now that the BC Election campaign is underway.
Also because of BCâs lopsided election financial laws, anyone in the world can donate to political parties and candidates. So if you want to donate to Morganeâs campaign and donât live in BC or Canada, you still can.
The abortion pill Mifegymiso will soon be available to women free of charge in New Brunswick, a major shift for a province with a history of restricting abortion access.
New Brunswick has become the first province to announce it will offer the abortion pill Mifegymiso to women free of charge, a major shift for a province with a history of restricting abortion access.
The government said Tuesday it will introduce a program in the coming months that will allow any woman with a valid medicare card to access Mifegymiso for free.
Health Minister Victor Boudreau said the Liberal government wanted to remove financial barriers to âa womanâs right to choose.â
âWe have been at the bottom of the list in regards to this issue for decades,â Boudreau acknowledged in a phone interview Tuesday. âBut itâs our government that is ⊠breaking down barriers.â
Mifegymiso, also known as RU-486, was authorized by Health Canada in July 2015 and became available on the market in January. It costs around $300.

As a New Brunswicker, this is a big deal. It used to be almost impossible to get an abortion in my old province and there are few clinics. This should help improve access.
The NDP MP for Burnaby South has launched a new online tool that asks visitors for their postal codes and in return, the site shows them whether theyâre on the pipeline route or in a marine spill zone.
Anyone unsure if their property is located on Kinder Morganâs proposed pipeline route can check out Kennedy Stewartâs personal website to find out.
The NDP MP for Burnaby South has launched a new online tool that asks visitors for their postal codes and in return, the site shows them whether theyâre on the pipeline route or in a marine spill zone.
âThis whole process is designed from a top down view,â said Stewart, whoâs been a longtime pipeline opponent. âWe designed this the other way. If youâre an individual person looking up at this big project, what would you need? And we tried to anticipate what people would need and not overwhelm them at the same time.â
One of the objectives is to let property owners know they have 30 days to file a statement of opposition, he added.
Stewart said one property owner from Langley, who had no idea about the project, accessed his site and found out he was on the route.
âThey have spent years spent rezoning this property to make it into a condo development. They had the contractors they had the developers, they had everybody on board.
âThey said, âOh my god, this goes through the middle of our complex, and weâve got to send in our letters to object and explain this,ââ said Stewart.

i havenât seen anyone talking about this on tumblr so Iâm making a post about it.
a few days ago this 18 year old guy named julien clement wore a shirt that says âIF YOU ARE GAY DONâT APPROACH ME IâLL KILL YOUâ in ottawa, the capital of canada, my hometown. he literally wants to murder gay people in cold blood.
julien clement and yan miller have openly stated they feel no remorse for wearing these shirts and have a homophobic gang called ATG which has around 20 members.Â
as someone whoâs been struggling really hard to live openly as queer/bisexual, this terrifies me to my core. i donât want to be scared for my life when i go to visit my friends and family. Â

There is a Transgender woman running in the 2017 provincial election in BC, Canada.
I just thought I should bring this to tumblrâs attention. Transgender activists rarely have the opportunity to run for political office, but Morgane Oger just became the official party nominee in a riding in Vancouver, for one of the two large political parties in the province of British Columbia.
To my knowledge a transgender person has never successfully been elected as a MLA (member of legislative assembly) in Canada.
Morgane Oger is running for the BC New Democratic Party (NDP) in the Vancouver riding of Vancouver-False Creek. Sheâs running against Sam Sullivan (one of Vancouverâs former mayors), who belongs to the BC Liberal Party.
The BC NDP = Centre-Left Party.
The BC Liberals = Centre-Right Party.
If you want to know more about the political views of the BC NDP (because most people vote on policy not the person as much), you can read more here. Theyâre a social democratic party (similar in views to people like Bernie Sanders with support for expansion of public services and social justice).
If you want to support her campaign, you can sign up here, and there is an option to say that youâre interested in volunteering or donating to her campaign.
The election isnât until next May, but I thought Iâd spread the word about it now.
Since the BC election is coming up soon, I thought Iâd bring this back.
British Columbia could make history by electing the first transgender person in Canada to office.
Also if you want to donate to her campaign directly, you can do that here.
Since only people who live in the riding of Vancouver-False Creek can vote for her, if you live elsewhere in the province but want to help, this is an easy way.
Happy International Womenâs Day!
Today we celebrate International Womenâs Day, a day in which we honor and recognize the contributions of womenâŠboth on Earth and in space.
Since the beginning, women have been essential to the progression and success of Americaâs space program.
Throughout history, women have had to overcome struggles in the workplace. The victories for gender rights were not achieved easily or quickly, and our work is not done.
Today, we strive to make sure that our legacy of inclusion and excellence lives on.
We have a long-standing cultural commitment to excellence that is largely driven by data, including data about our people. And our data shows progress is driven by questioning our assumptions and cultural prejudices â by embracing and nurturing all talent we have available, regardless of gender, race or other protected status, to build a workforce as diverse as our mission. This is how we, as a nation, will take the next giant leap in exploration.
As a world leader in science, aeronautics, space exploration and technology, we have a diverse mission that demands talent from every corner of America, and every walk of life.
So, join us today, and every day, as we continue our legacy of inclusion and excellence.
Happy International Womenâs Day!
