Charles: He’s an exceptional driver—a four-time World Champion. But I’ve always considered myself very lucky because I’ve had the chance to race alongside teammates that were always very good: Lewis, Seb, Carlos. So no, it doesn’t scare me. And if one day it would happen, it would also be a nice story. We started together back in 2010, we raced through every karting category together… so why not?

Q: He’d have to come to Ferrari, though—you’ve got a long-term contract with them.

Charles: Definitely not. Once the visor comes down, there's no friendship. But yes, our relationship has changed. We’ve grown up, we’re much more mature now. Life has changed a lot since we first started racing. When you’re a kid, you experience everything at full. What happens on track, I was convinced he was a bad person, and I’m sure he felt exactly the same about me.

As you grow up, though, you realize that people, beyond what happens on track, are very different. So yes, our relationship has changed.

Charles: Anyone, really. But honestly, I enjoy racing Max because I know he never gives up—and neither will I. Then we’ll see what happens. That’s the beauty of racing. That’s what I love about it. It’s what gets me buzzing once I get out of the car, because there’s no room for emotions while you’re driving. Although sometimes, after doing something truly special, you can still feel the shivers running through you. So yes, I like racing Max because I know neither of us let it go.

Okay so I make shitty "oh eww the straights" jokes just as much as the rest of the gays, a lot of the time when a show I'm watching has The Straights™ doing anything vaguely romantic or sexual. But I'm NEVER going to do that when I'm watching Pirates of the Caribbean, because you've got to understand, Will and Elizabeth Turner are the couple of all time. They love each other so much. They spend the whole movie saving each other's lives and they never hesitate once. They would dive into hell for each other and it's so obvious in the way that they speak of each other and think of each other and act towards each other that you sometimes forget that they don't actually admit that they love each other until the very, very end (of the first movie).

The internet has really latched onto more toxic relationships for some reason, but like, no, fuck that. This is what we need more of. Inject this directly into my veins actually. Genuinely wholesome and loving relationships that make me squee with absolute awe and joy and wonder and delight at the strength and depth of these characters' love for each other. Make more of these. Make the gay or lesbian or what have you version of this, please.
