“I very proudly entered the forestry school as an 18-year-old and telling them that the reason that I wanted to study botany was because I wanted to know why asters and goldenrod looked so beautiful together. These are these amazing displays of this bright, chrome yellow and deep purple of New England aster, and they look stunning together. And the two plants so often intermingle rather than living apart from one another, and I wanted to know why that was. I thought that surely in the order and the harmony of the universe, there would be an explanation for why they looked so beautiful together. And I was told that that was not science, that if I was interested in beauty, I should go to art school. Which was really demoralizing as a freshman, but I came to understand that question wasn’t going to be answered by science, that science, as a way of knowing, explicitly sets aside our emotions, our aesthetic reactions to things. We have to analyze them as if they were just pure material, and not matter and spirit together. And, yes, as it turns out, there’s a very good biophysical explanation for why those plants grow together, so it’s a matter of aesthetics and it’s a matter of ecology. Those complimentary colors of purple and gold together, being opposites on the color wheel, they’re so vivid, they actually attract far more pollinators than if those two grew apart from one another. So each of those plants benefits by combining its beauty with the beauty of the other. And that’s a question that science can address, certainly, as well as artists. And I just think that “Why is the world so beautiful?” is a question that we all ought to be embracing.”

Unmasking tip for adult autistics/neurodivergent people that I learned recently: replace “what should I do in this situation” with “what do I want to do in this situation”.
Very often, neurodiverse people who grew up undiagnosed and learned to mask extremely well overcompensate by always trying to figure out what the “right” move is for any given situation, especially new ones, and that can make social situations very frightening if you don’t have anyone to mimic or don’t have time to watch others and copy them. It can be a good strategy for things like job interviews, but it can cause problems in more personal relationships such as friends, siblings, partners, loved ones etc etc. because it’s easy to get into the habit of copying to the extent that you’re never being the person you really are - only an approximation of appropriate behaviors and that gets tiring, not to mention lonely. And obviously there are some “shoulds” in personal relationships when it comes to not being intentionally cruel, taking criticism, things like that.
But when it comes to more benign things like how you talk, how you comfort someone, how/if you give/receive gifts, how your respond to what you’re told, and more or less just how you love, there’s nothing wrong with just being how you are and behaving how you would naturally. Some people might get frustrated or angry with it or not like that version of you and those aren’t the right people to be around - the mask isn’t worth the people who like you better with it on and there are a lot of people out there who will like the unmasked version of you better than the masked version, because it’s more authentic and unique and actually shows them who you are and how you think, not just how good you are at pretending.
The school system continues to fail neurodiverse students
Neurodivergence in academic settings is highly misunderstood & under discussed. Below is a master list of information on the reality of being a neurodivergent student in an education system built for neurotypicals; as well as resources and tools to aid students with autism, adhd, dyslexia and more in higher education. Please share this post so it can reach, educate and assist and many people as possible.
**this will be continuously updated. if you have any additions please feel free to message me or send me an ask and i’ll add it to the list!

All I want is this life with you.
why is it that whenever I am disillusioned with the world I go back to the epic of Gilgamesh
“It is the story of their becoming human together.”
This is it. This is the oldest written literary work that we know of, and it’s a story of becoming human together.
This is a story about love, and it’s a story about death, and we told this story thousands of years ago, THOUSANDS of years. We have always, always, always been wrestling with this profoundly beautiful existence and with knowing one another, while knowing that we all will die and be forgotten.
We become human by loving, but we also become human by knowing death.
And I’m just sitting here touching other human beings, another human experience, from across millennia, feeling a bit more human too through it, and I am trying very hard not to cry.
