"No one would have made me a prefect, I spent too much time in detention with James. Lupin was the good boy, he got the badge."
turn and face the strange changes {late september, 1977}
Remus knew that their seventh year at Hogwarts was going to be different from the other years but he wasn’t prepared with just how different that would be. The first thing being was Prongs as Head Boy. He had assumed that with being a Prefect that he had a good chance of becoming Head Boy. And while it wasn’t something that he had actually wanted to be, he had enough on his plate as it was, he felt a bit disappointed that it wasn’t him.
That wasn’t the only thing that seemed to be different. Since the start of term, it almost felt like the Marauders were slowly going their own ways. James was always busy with either Lily or Head Boy things, Sirius seemed to be off sulking most days, and Peter- Well it was hard to tell where Peter was up to. Remus himself managed to keep busy with Prefect duties and his homework, not knowing what else to do with himself these days. It had been a long evening of Prefect duties and he was finally heading back up to the dorm, wondering who would be up there and what kind of mood they would be in.
As he pushed open the door, already shrugging his robes off, he saw Sirius sitting on his bed, a book laying next to him. Remus gave a slight raise of his eyebrow as he crossed over to his own bed. “Have you finally gave into a life of academics?” He asked with a nod towards the book that was laying next to Sirius. Hoping that he would be able to keep the mood light and someone shake Sirius out of the sulking mood he had seemed to be in lately.
He threw his robes onto the top of his chest and sunk down onto his own bed, giving a slight roll of his shoulders as he sat there. Remus also had work that needed to be done but for once in his life, he wanted to have some time to relax. To unwind from the day and kick back before he dove into his studies for the night.
Sirius didn't bother to look up when he heard the door open - he'd given up hoping that James would come to his senses and abandon his Head Boy duties for a round of mischief and trouble-making. Hell, he'd given up hoping that Peter or Remus would accompany him, as well. It seemed that everyone else was too busy to spend time with him and keep him company, and that didn't sit well with Sirius. The end of the school year, while still far off, was slowly coming closer and closer, and with it adulthood and a world full of scary possibilities and terrifying changes. Sirius Black didn't do well with change.
When Remus' voice reached his ears, Sirius only shrugged. While he might have once been excited at the prospect of spending time with Remus - or any of his friends - he felt too down in the dumps to really care at the moment. Sirius sighed, however, and reluctantly looked up as Remus sat on his own bed. "Maybe. I suppose. You could call it that," he answered, hesitated, then added: "No, actually." He shrugged again and, after tossing a disdainful look at his neglected book, snapped the cover shut and shoved it towards the end of his bed, giving it a little kick for good measure.
Sirius gave yet another sigh, although it really was more of a pathetic huff, and frowned, his eyebrows knitting together. "Where've you been all day?" he asked, sounding almost accusatory. Sirius could understand that James had things to do, as did Peter, he presumed, but Remus didn't have any excuse for not being around to keep him company. Or at least that's how Sirius saw it; he chose to ignore the fact that Remus did schoolwork and had Prefect duties. In his mind, Remus was the one responsible for spending time with him with no one else could.
turn and face the strange changes {late september, 1977}
Sirius had always pictured his seventh year to be very different from what it was becoming. It was his last year as a child, his last year to pull pranks and cause trouble and be worry-free. It was his last year with his beloved Marauders, and they had all made a pact the previous year to make it the best year of their lives. That had all changed, however, when James had received his Hogwarts letter that named him Head Boy for the year. Naturally, Sirius didn't believe it at first. There was no way that James - his Prongs - was Head Boy; it didn't make any sense. They were partners in crime. Brothers in mischief. Little hellions who tormented the staff and students for a good laugh.
But as it turned out, James actually was Head Boy, and Sirius wasn't very happy about it. He felt as though he'd lost his brother - again - and he wasn't going to get him back because now his brother had someone else. Now James had Lily. Even if they weren't a thing, Sirius could still tell that sooner or later they would be and he wouldn't have his best friend, anymore. So Sirius had taken to trying to pull off pranks by himself, partly to try to cope with the supposed loss of his best friend. Of course he was still best friends with James, but things were different and Sirius didn't like different.
Sirius was currently sat on his bed in the empty boys' dormitory, open Defense Against the Dark Arts book beside him untouched. James was off taking care of some Head duties, he thought, although he wasn't exactly too sure. He often found himself simply not paying attention when James would make excuses and leave. Likewise, he didn't much care where Peter was, or Remus for that matter. He was too busy sulking to care about much of anything.
He glanced down at his book and briefly considered that he should probably work on some homework since he didn't have anything else to do, but he ultimately decided against it for what was probably the seventh time that afternoon. He didn't know what to do with himself. He was like a lost child without his partner in crime.

Mischief Managed
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.
