everyone knows that when you meet lock eyes with your soulmate that time will freeze.

except you are not really expecting that to happen when you are bent over ready for a face off.

it’s crazy how they didn’t even notice at first time stopped until they realized the puck wasn’t dropping. just blue and green eyes meeting in a competitive stare down through the cages before they slowly melt into soft understanding.

will stands up from his stance and pulls up his helmet off.

mack quickly follows before looking around at the silent rink where everyone is waiting in anticipation for the puck to drop, “this is so trippy. what if we aren’t there when time unfreezes?”

will laughs, “you know that it will only unfreeze unless we are back in the same position?”

“where did they teach you that?”

“school? is your brain too wired into hockey to pay attention?”

mack doesn’t bother to answer, “so do you think we can race?”

“is that what you wanna do?”

mack gives him a toothy grin before dropping his stick and skating off. will is on him immediately and suddenly they are just two young boys goofing off in the rink for what seems like hours.

at some point they will need to go back and actually play a game and worse deal with everything else in the world. but for now, they can just be them for a bit.

i mean who better to have as your soulmate than someone who can make you better.

like the penguins game happens and it’s not just will’s shoulder but also he hits his head and blacks out… suddenly he wakes up and he’s at mack’s place and he’s so confused like shouldn’t he be at the hospital?

eventually mack comes into the room and will just questions him. why is he at jumbo’s? shouldn’t they be in pittsburgh? why is his shoulder in a sling?

mack looks so tired and sad before explaining that the game was a month ago.

will is stunned. what do you mean he can’t remember anything from the last month?

“the term is anterograde amnesia?” will knows mack is trying to play it off like he’s not upset that will is still in this state of limbo.

he points out that will kept a notebook of the previous days for him to read and will drives in, making mack snort.

“sorry, it’s just you do that every day.”

it pangs in his heart to hear mack like this. he reads and reads as mack leaves to go to practice or something.

something feels off. the more will goes through the pages, the more mack’s name comes up.

how previous will learnt what happened day one while mack was in the room. how the team decided quickly he shouldn’t be on his own and mack volunteered to bring him in, with jumbo’s permission. how how mack helped his family when they apparently visited for christmas because going on a plane could mess him up. how mack calmed him down way too many times when will woke up because of the pain of his shoulder and the panic of not knowing where he was.

except things became more vague. how mack decided to sleep in the same bed as will. how mack knew the procedure every morning to tell will. how mack always tries to call will when he’s away on road trips and will stays with cat.

how some days mack can be a ray of sun and others mack just gets exhausted at will.

will putters into the kitchen where mack is making a protein shake. “i’m sorry.”

mack looks at him confused. maybe past will never said this to him before.

“for what? it’s not your fault your head got bashed during a game.”

“no, that you have to keep taking care of me.”

mack takes a deep breath before walking over. “don’t stop me because i know you need this.”

and suddenly mack wraps him into a hug. will can’t help but return it. it’s a bit awkward with the sling since it’s just one arm. but somehow it feels so good and eerily familiar.

except it also feels wrong. like they could do more.

will can’t help but ask, “is that all you know i need?”

mack laughs a little, “it is scary how much you are starting to catch on. are you sure you don’t have them back yet?”

will can’t even respond before mack’s lips are onto him. it’s a first kiss for his mind but his lips welcome him with a ghostly familiarity that makes will yearn for the moments before.

“i’m sorry,” will whispers again into another kiss. “i want to remember.”

“you will,” mack’s confidence makes will melt further into the embrace they are in. “i know you. somehow you will find a way and i’ll be here.”
