Wardrobe Thoughts
So six years after everyone else i found out about how incredibly expensive johnâs wardrobe is. I knew the shooting jacket was probably in the area of a couple hundred, but i never ever expected it to be 800 dollars.and a 3000 dollar watch??with his 300 dollar shoes?? Sherlocks entire outfit, from Belstaff, Spencer Heart suit, Yves Saint Laurent shoes barely equal out to just Johns watch, but then Sherlockâs watch is less than 100? Itâs just⌠a normal watch. Tells time. Not good for water or heavy use, it just⌠tells time and looks nice.Â
Which got me thinking
So i go look at the first episode again, meeting him by surprise as Barts, Sherlockâs wearing a.. decent suit, Iâll admit I am not an expert here but it doesnât look as crisp as others. Its wrinkly and a weird sort of material and not half as crisp as we see him looking in suits later on. Also that shirt is simply not his size, so either Sherlock bought the wrong size off the rack, itâs an old shirt heâs grown out of, and the collar is all mangled. Yes i know he was whipping a corpse, but
still
.
((also for the sake of all this hair discourse this weekend, ill make note that me and BC apparently have the same hair type and sometimes it just does this. up on one side, down on the other, cant do anything unless you shower again and start from scratch. This is a âfuckit, thats good enoughâ hairday))
^^Look how pilly old and soft that scarf is! Sentiment Scarf, decades old or something cheap he got from the uk equivalent of Goodwill?
Then comes John in⌠this jacket doesnât look too expensive to me, a couple hundred. A good jacket, though, has a nice lining lots of pockets and ostentatious wooden buttons. Iâm going to say that if its a notable brand then its old, pre-military service and noticeably so (to Sherlock), someone that had money for an expensive but not obscene jacket several years ago and could do with a better one now.
[[An Aside: When John says âI'm not the John watson you used toâŚ.â and looks down at his hand, we are meant to see his hand tremor, but it  doesn't really tremble much, âŚ. aaand we can see a glimpse of that expensive watch. I like @vanetti recent comment (which i cant find to actually confirm if i'm remembering source correctly) about âit may have been a gift from James Sholto, who we know has moneyâ, because thatâs the most painful moment for him to think about that, which makes it perfect for Jolto pain.]]
Sherlock says about Baker Street âTogether we can afford itâ meaning Sherlock canât afford it, meaning Sherlock is saying âthe both of us are pretty broke, right? Letâs go halfsiesâ
So the next day Sherlockâs wearing a different suit, (still doesnât fit) and we all know heâs the cutest eagerest puppy trying to impress John, all growly voiced and mysterious. Even in a platonic way, we can all agree he wanted to look cool for his interesting previously-wealthy, skilled and battle-hardened flatmate.
Later in the episode, he takes this expensive (but still reasonably priced, i would wager) suit and JUMPS IN DUMPSTERS WITH IT. For a man that needed a discount AND a flatmate and wears old pilly scarves and cheap watches (his is about 100 dollars and not good to get wet) i would say Sherlock does not treat his suits well. His suits, which are probably old. He takes off the jacket, which ought to stink of garbage juice, when he gets home, then puts the stink jacket back on to go eat at Angeloâs. This man doesnât care about his suits.
Its definitely FUN to see his shirt begging for death and ironing and to be let out at the sides, your buttons arenât actually supposed to explode off when you just have one arm out. Makes it Wrinkle.Â
Look at these trousers, Sherlock, shame. Too long too loose and the shoes need polishing as well. This picture is before he spends the evening jumping in skips, btw, these are just the quality of his suits at this point.
But what does John show up in? Perfectly sized and crisp ironed shirt, under a very nice and well-maintained sweater (you know that nice sweater wasnât found at a thrift shop. Difficult to care for, they pill and get snagged and get stretched in the wash. That sweater looks great) Oh yeah, and his $800 shooting jacket, and yes, again, $3000 watch.
I am 100% believing  that John doesnât think about clothes that much, that he buys good sturdy things that fit him perfectly, with the intention of having it hold up for as long as possible. He buys a $900 jacket because he wants to have that be his primary jacket for the next 15 years. Even the watch, which was probably a gift from Sholto, is great underwater, will survive nearly anything i expect, and is probably, to John, just a Very Good Watch.Â
But you know who would look at Johnâs totally reasonable and normal looking outfit and go âholy crap, this man is dressed incredibly wellâ? Sherlock.
Sherlock that goes to dinner in a garbage-juice suit and whose shirts are too small and his pants too big and his scarf too old.
What clothes does Sherlock wear after John saves him from the cabbie and impresses him and he now might have a bit of a crush? At least a friend crush?
A suit. A nice suit. A well fitted suit. One he immediately starts preening and fixing and which seems to be getting in the way of assassin-fighting, honestly. His collar is crisp, now, his trousers are actually the right length this episode, heâs sitting all folded and fancy and waiting for John to get home. He spends the whole episode doing the Lone Wolf showoff thing, too, and tries to act like he doesnât need the money from Sebastian, even though we know heâs broke.
Then in TGG, 1-2 weeks after TBB and after John said rude things about him on his blog, Sherlock is in a cheap comfy hanes-looking shirt and normal PJ bottoms and is flopping all over the living room like a regular frumpy person. (he also, a couple days into the tgg investigation, makes the horrible mistake of brushing his hair with the wrong type of hairbrush, the kind that makes his/my hair go weird and flat, which if he was meticulous about appearance he would have known better than to try)
So
The reason i make this whole big dumb post.
I like to think that maybe Pre-John, Sherlock dressed more or less like everyone else. His shirts were off the rack, his suits were either secondhand and untailored or gifts from Mycroft who didnât know Sherlockâs exact measurements(either due to time or distance). He probably wore off-the-rack trousers and off-the-rack shirts and his coat and scarf and that was as far as he cared to try. His long coat was probably a big warm gift that he only sends to get dry cleaned when it starts to smell, his scarf was just His Favourite Scarf that might have been something heâd had for 20 years or just last week when Mrs Hudson took it off her own rack and handed it to him. His watch did Watch Things and didnât need to be nice, because Mycroft was the brother that agonized over appearances and Sherlock didnât care about any of that stuff, he looked Fine and if he deigned to put a suit on it was for a purpose (he may well have needed it earlier in the morning of asip to sneak around, or even the day before, and was just not bothering to change yet) Then he met John, with his $800 perfectly maintained jacket, perfectly fit clothes and $3000 watch, no scuffs on his shoes and smart, capable, a fighter, a hero, a doctor, and Sherlock goes âOh shit, I need to step up my gameâ. Gets all his clothes tailored and starts making an effort to take care of the fancy robes and things that Mycroft and his parents always gift him at the holidays.Â
Sherlock used to be a garbage child, which suited his lifestyle, and now half the reason Mycroft likes John is that Sherlock cleaned up for him.
And of course, John thinks Sherlock always dressed like this, always acts like this, and never realizes just how much effort Sherlock is going into to impress him.
THIS IS THE BEST F**KING THING I HAVE READ ALL DAY. A GARBAGE CHILD.
Very interesting, this.
@loveismyrevolution found it again for me! Thank you!

Almost a year since series 4
So itâs been almost a year since Sherlock Series 4 came out. In some ways it feels like a loooong year, and in other ways, I canât believe itâs already drawing to a close. Do you Sherlock fans remember how excited everyone was last year? Many of us were smarting from some very disappointing elections, and really looking forward to some good news from the Sherlock universe. A number of beloved celebrities had passed on recently, David Bowie, and Alan Rickman, and we didnât know Carrie Fisher was right behind, but things felt a bit glum.
We were on FIRE here on Tumblr trying to predict what would happen with S4, and so many were banking on an actual relationship between Sherlock and John to be revealed. The time felt ripe with several countries recently voting gay marriage as legal. With all the teaser trailers asking who does Sherlock love, and hints about âmaking historyâ and âground breakingâ cinema to come, it felt like time for the first openly-gay Holmes and Watson to step into the spotlight. People were so excited, the fandom was probably creating its own light source glowing gently in the dark night with the collective angst, hope, squee and general nervous energy.
Then Series 4 rolled out, and a collective jaw dropping occurred. This really wasnât what many of us were expecting. There are still fans out there who enjoyed S4, liked the excellent acting, and camera work, enjoyed the silly fun of it, but many of us were crushed. We had held out so long, hoping for some character development, some plot hole resolution, some satisfying time with our favorite crime-solving duo, and some serious representation for the LGBTQ community as the show has woven queer culture into its fabric since day one. With all these built-up expectations, we all tuned in at the start of January with a collective breath holding âŚ
What we actually got with Series 4 was a mishmash of crazy images, things that can only be read as dream sequences to make any sense, characters that no long seemed like the people we knew and loved, and an homage to the last few decades of horror films all remixed and thrown together with a thin veneer of Sherlock pasted over top. We walked into topsy-turvy world so incomprehensible that many shifted over to a âtin hatâ club deciding that S4 had to be a joke, or a trick, a ruse for the casual fans before the REAL series 4 was revealed. How could all the people who collectively make Sherlock have agreed to this shambling mess of a show?
I canât answer how everyone agreed to make series 4, all I know is that they did. They not only completely ditched any story theyâd been telling with the first three series, but then proceeded to deconstruct the very nature of the Holmes and Watson world. They took the ultimate âbuddy story,â the detective and his faithful doctor, two of them against the world, to wrench Sherlock and John apart - mocking and destroying the character of John repeatedly while Sherlock and Mary cozied up as new buddies-in-sleuthing. Suddenly a baby was part of the mix, then a ghost, then a mad sister running the whole show behind the scenes. Â It was crazy-making trying to keep up with it all, and ultimately rather boring. A series of behavioral experiments in a cage on an island facility held none of the clever detective work, none of the fun storytelling, and none of the relationship building that have pulled people into the Sherlock Holmes stories for over a hundred years.
Moffat and Gatiss, two privileged men who had control of the BBC Sherlock franchise, decided to have fun, insane wish fulfillment, adding in helicopter chase scenes, explosions, Mycroft in silly costumes, bleeding portraits, and Shutter Island sequences because they were bored with what made Sherlock Holmes a household name. How could they though? I still ask myself this. Did they hate Sherlock Holmes and all that he stood for so much that they needed to leach their version of anything that made it beloved and iconic? They turned Sherlock into a maudlin junkie who could barely solve his way out of a paper bag. They morphed John into a rage-filled alcoholic who abandons his child to nameless friends and beats his best friend as he lies bleeding on a morgue floor. They made sure to code all their villains as queer, a ghastly repeat of a wrong that has been wounding the LGBTQ community since film was invented. They made ex-assassin Mary into some angelic visitor who now owned the spirit of the Holmes and Watson mythos, narrating the last gasp of the series, a montage of cases and moments that LOOKED like the show we wanted to be watching all along. It was like seeing a window to the mirror universe where everything is going well while youâre trapped in the shadowy evil version of the space-time continuum.
I still canât get over how awful it all was. Time has dulled the sharp pain, but I still feel the loss of what BBC Sherlock series 4 could have been. It really, truly could have made history with the first queer Holmes and Watson in an open, loving relationship played out unashamedly on a world stage for all to see. It didnât, but it doesnât mean we canât see this happen in another adaptation of Holmes and Watson. Our time will come. It just wasnât 2017, but it will happen. Balance of probability donât you know.

Ohh ohh I'm a million years late for the drarry dialogue asks! "Thereâs something Iâve been meaning to sayâŚ" or "Don't make it into a big deal." if you haven't gotten those yet. (or, y'know, together because they could go nicely together ;) *tap dances away*)
JFC, @carpemermaid Iâm so sorry for the delay?! (YES Iâm still trying to do all of these *cries*)Â
Also for @goldentruth813 and anon! â¤ď¸
Draco bursts into the room, immediately spotting Harry on the sofa, and strides over. He walks up and plucks the remote out of his hand, ignoring his splutter of indignation as he turns the television off and flings the remote down before sinking into the sofa next to Harry.
âLook, Iâve been meaning to say something for a while now and Iââ Draco grits his teeth, shaking his head with a sharp jerk, âAnd I just have to get it out okay?!â
Harry blinks, turning slightly in place to face him better, pushing his glasses up his nose. âOkay?â
âAnd please donât make it into a big deal?!â Draco requests irritably.
Harry snorts. âIâll try,â he replies wryly.
âOkay. Okay, Iâm just going to say it! Iâm just going to say itââ
âI have all night, Draco.â
âIloveyou.âÂ
Dracoâs abruptly blurted garble receives a slow blink and an expectant stare.
âThatâs it,â Draco clarifies, face heating.
âOh.â Harry fidgets slightly, frowning at Draco as if trying to figure something out.Â
âYou could be more pleasant about this,â Draco snaps, lip curling.
âNo! Iâmâ Iâm happy! Itâs justââ Harry scratches his head like a stupid, fucking git, âIâmâŚnot sure whyâ?â
âNot sure why I love you?!â Draco asks incredulously. âHow about because youâre an infuriatingly good person?! Because youâre strangely handsome even when youâre asleep with your fucking mouth hanging wide open and drool dripping down your chin?! Because youâ you put up with all my nonsense, and you helped me cope after the War, and youâre fucking fantastic in bed, andââ
He falls silent as Albus scampers into the room, his little diaper clad bum swaying, the front of his brand new Hogwarts t-shirt stained with chocolate. He thrusts a chocolate frog at Harry, âOpen,â he demands imperiously, the stubborn set of his jaw and lazy drawl so reminiscent of Draco that Draco scowls self-consciously.Â
âNo,â he says pointedly, frowning. âI just opened one of these for you; thatâs plenty. Dinner is in half an hour anyway.â
Albus glares, stamping his tiny foot on the carpet, growling out once more, âOpen.â
âI said no.â
âPapa, sssshh!â Albus shushes him, flapping one pudgy, chocolate smeared hand at him in annoyance. âOpen. Dada, open!â
Harry, whoâd watched the whole exchange with a, frankly obscenely amused grin, scoops up the toddler-in-a-strop onto his lap, plucking the sweet out of his hand. âYou know I always have trouble opening these, Albie,â he says, eyes wide and innocent. âPapaâs the only one who can open them.â
Albus snatches the chocolate out of Harryâs hand and hurls it at Draco with a scowl before kicking his way out of Harryâs lap and scampering back into the kitchen with an enraged howl.
âI swear heâs getting more spoilt by the minute,â Draco sighs, raking a hand through his hair. âTerrible twoâs or not.â Harry picks up the chocolate frog with a nonchalant hum, peeling it open neatly and biting the head off.
He breaks off one leg and feeds it to Draco. âYou were saying?â he prompts gently, a slight smirk playing about his hips.
Draco chews in silence, flushing once more. âNothing,â he says scowling. âYouâre being an awfully dull shit about it anyway.â
âIâm not!â Harry laughs. âIâm just confused as to why youâre telling me now.â
âWhatâs a good time for you then?â Draco drawls, stealing another piece of chocolate.
âOh, I donât know,â Harry says airily, âHow about seven years ago when I said it to you for the first time and you turned redder than a beet and proceeded to punch me in the stomach?âÂ
Draco promptly turns redder than a beet. âMerlin, youâre a shit.â
âOr five years ago when I said I love you during our vows and you turned to the audience with a sneer and rolled your eyes?â
âExcuse me, but they all found that hilarious!â
âOr when our son was born and I was crying and you asked me to go get you a bottle of Pumpkin Juice because I was âslobberingâ all over you?â
Draco stares at his hands in silence, shifting awkwardly in his seat, expression now upset more than embarrassed. âI know,â he says in a low voice. âI missed a lot of good opportunities, butââ
âBut that doesnât mean you didnât love me at the time,â Harry interrupts, smiling, expression soft. âYou think I didnât know that you love me?â
âWell, thereâs a lot of things you donât know, Golden Boy,â Draco scowls, âJust thought Iâd clarify.â
Harry reaches over and tugs him sharply by the arm, Draco landing in his lap with a soft grunt. âNot true - I know that Iâm fantastic in bed.â
Dracoâs lip curls, even as he presses closer to him. âI knew you were going toââ
âSay it again.â
âI love you,â Draco responds clearly without missing a beat.
Harry grins, hand warm on the nape of Dracoâs neck as he pulls his head down. âFinally,â he breathes against Dracoâs lips.

everyone knows the trope of the Weasleyâs finding out about all the shit the Dursleyâs put Harry through, but what about when Draco Malfoy, original mamaâs boy and spoiled brat, hears Harry say, âI know the drill, Iâll be in my room, making no noise, and pretending I donât existâ? Imagine Draco needling the story out of Harry, learning that he would pretend not to exist while everyone else ate fancy dinner and he had nothing? Draco would vow to never let Harry feel like that ever again, and would start the process of spoiling him rotten like he should have been all those years ago.
